Chapter 2

The house felt different when I returned—smaller somehow, like a stage set rather than a home. I moved through the rooms with new eyes, seeing the worn furniture, the carefully mended curtains, the appliances I'd made last years beyond their intended lifespan. All part of Rhys's elaborate theater.

In our bedroom, I knelt beside the bed and reached underneath, my fingers finding the cool metal of the fireproof box. It had been there for years—my emergency fund, I'd told myself. Insurance against the unexpected. Now I understood it had been insurance against exactly this moment.

I pulled out a yellow legal pad from the box—a relic from my law school days that I'd never been able to throw away. The pages were slightly yellowed at the edges, but the lines were still crisp, waiting for the organized thoughts I'd once been known for.

My hands trembled as I dialed Hannah's number.

"Cora?" Her voice was sharp with surprise. "It's been—"

"I need your help," I cut in, my voice steadier than I expected. "Everything you said about Rhys... you were right."

There was a beat of silence, then Hannah's professional mask slipped into place. I could practically hear her switching gears, her lunch forgotten on her desk.

"Tell me everything," she said, her voice dropping into what I recognized as her courtroom register.

As I spoke, my pen moved across the legal pad, making notes in my small, precise handwriting. Hannah interrupted only to ask clarifying questions, her mind already forming a strategy.

"Okay," she said finally. "Here's what you're going to do. First, you're going to play the part he expects—the oblivious, submissive wife. Can you do that?"

"Yes," I said, surprising myself with how certain I was.

"Good. Because we need time to build this case properly. You need to access everything—bank statements, tax returns, property records. We're looking for a paper trail of his deception."

"He's careful," I warned.

"He's arrogant," Hannah countered. "And arrogant people make mistakes."

After hanging up, I pulled on rubber gloves and grabbed cleaning supplies. If Rhys came home, I'd be just another day deep-cleaning our modest home, the perfect picture of domesticity.

I worked methodically, room by room, my real purpose hidden behind the mundane task of cleaning. In our home office, I found what I was looking for—a filing cabinet with ten years of carefully organized records. Tax returns showing modest incomes. Bank statements reflecting our penny-pinching existence.

All lies.

I photographed everything, my hands steady despite the rage building inside me. Each document was another piece of evidence, another brick in the wall of proof I was constructing.

That night, after James was asleep, I sat at the kitchen table and began scanning the documents into my laptop. The soft click of the scanner seemed impossibly loud in the quiet house.

"Let the record reflect," I whispered to myself, channeling Hannah's favorite phrase.

I uploaded the files to a secure cloud storage Hannah had set up, establishing the foundational timeline of Rhys's financial abuse and systematic gaslighting.

The next evening, Rhys came home at his usual time, his face arranged in an expression of exhaustion that I now recognized as entirely performative.

"The electric bill," he said without preamble, dropping his briefcase by the door. "It's up eight percent from last month."

I nodded meekly, playing my part. "I'll try to do better with the thermostat."

"Do better?" He laughed, the sound like breaking glass. "We can barely afford groceries as it is."

I bit my tongue until I tasted blood. "I could skip getting new boots this winter."

"See that you do," he said coldly, loosening his tie—a tie I now recognized as Hermès, worth more than our monthly mortgage payment.

As he lectured me about tightening our already suffocating budget, I studied his face—the slight tightening around his eyes when he lied, the way his jaw clenched when he thought I wasn't looking. These weren't the unconscious tells of an anxious man; they were the calculated movements of a predator enjoying his game.

"You understand, don't you?" he asked, his voice softening into something almost tender.

I nodded, my hands folded in my lap to hide their trembling. Not from fear—from the effort of containing the rage that threatened to consume me.

"Of course," I whispered. "Whatever you need."

In his eyes, I saw the flicker of satisfaction that told me he believed he was still in control.

He had no idea what was coming.
