Chapter 3

The blue box sat on the pillow like a period at the end of a sentence.

Tiffany. White ribbon. The whole performance.

Jayden sat on the edge of the bed watching me open it, and his face had that look — the one I used to think was love. Soft eyes. A small, private smile. The look of a man who believes he is doing something beautiful.

"Seven years and forever," he signed, slow and deliberate, the way he always did when he wanted the words to land.

I looked at the bracelet. Silver chain, small diamonds, the kind of thing that photographs well. I lifted my eyes to his and let my face do what it had been doing for two weeks.

I smiled.

I held out my wrist.

He fastened the clasp with both hands, careful, like I was something fragile. Then he pulled out his phone and put his arm around me and I leaned into his shoulder and he took the picture. I saw the screen for a half second before he pocketed it. We looked perfect. We looked like people who had built something real.

"Forever," I signed back.

He kissed my temple. His mouth was warm. I kept my eyes open.

Veronica was in the kitchen when I came downstairs.

She was standing at the counter in a silk robe I didn't own, one hand wrapped around a mug, the other resting on the curve of her belly. She had the particular ease of a woman who has decided a space already belongs to her.

I went to the coffee maker.

"Enjoy your little costume jewelry," she said. Quiet. Almost friendly. "I'll be wearing the real ring soon enough."

I poured my coffee.

The stream of it was dark and steady and I watched it fill the mug and I thought about nothing. I thought about the gate number on my boarding pass. I thought about Sydney in November, how my mother said the jacarandas would be out.

Then I turned around.

I looked at her. Not long. Just a fraction of a second past what was comfortable — long enough for something to flicker in her expression, some small uncertainty she didn't know what to do with. She had never actually looked at me, not once in the weeks she'd been moving through this house like she owned it. She'd looked at an idea of me. A deaf woman. A placeholder. Something that could be waited out.

She had no idea what she was looking at.

I took my coffee upstairs.

Jayden left at eight-fifteen.

He signed *I love you* at the door. I signed it back. He smiled, touched my face once, and was gone.

I stood in the hallway and listened to his car pull out of the driveway. Listened to the sound of it fade down the street. Listened to the house settle into quiet.

Then I went upstairs and changed my clothes.

Jeans. Flat shoes. The gray sweater Payton had sent me last Christmas that Jayden had never liked. I moved without hurrying. There was nothing to hurry toward and nothing to run from. This had already been decided. I was just finishing the last step.

The suitcase was where I'd left it, behind the winter coats. I pulled it out and set it by the door and then I went to the bedroom wall.

The frame was white wood. Simple. I'd picked it out myself, years ago, because I wanted it to look like something that mattered. I lifted it off the hook and carried it downstairs to the kitchen island and set it face-up under the light.

Our marriage certificate. Seven years of believing in this piece of paper. Seven years of looking at it like it was proof of something.

I found a Post-it note in the junk drawer. Yellow. I wrote four words.

*I heard everything.*

I pressed it to the glass.

I did not look at it again.

The taxi was already at the curb. I rolled the suitcase down the front steps and the wheels made a clean sound on the pavement and I did not look back at the house.

We were on the BQE when my phone buzzed.

Veronica.

*He's mine. He always was. You were just keeping his bed warm 😘*

I read it once. Outside the window, Brooklyn moved past in flat morning light. A row of brownstones. A bodega with yellow awning. A kid on a bike.

I typed slowly, because I wanted every word to be exact.

*Congratulations. You've won a man who fakes marriage certificates. I hope you both get exactly what you deserve. And yes — I can hear perfectly now. Every. Single. Word.*

I sent it.

Then I took the SIM card out of the phone. It snapped clean between my fingers. I cracked the window and let it go, and watched it disappear into the gray air behind us.

The taxi accelerated onto the highway.

I pressed my back against the seat and let my hands rest open in my lap and watched Brooklyn shrink in the rearview mirror until there was nothing left of it at all.

The bracelet was still on my wrist. I unclasped it somewhere past the toll plaza and set it on the seat beside me without looking at it again.

JFK was forty minutes away.

Sydney was twenty-two hours after that.

I watched the road open up ahead of us, long and straight and going somewhere entirely new, and for the first time in seven years I didn't have to keep my face still.

I let it do whatever it wanted.

It didn't do anything dramatic. It just went quiet, the way you go quiet after something is finally, completely over.

That was enough.
