Chapter 2

Two weeks. Fourteen dinners. Fourteen mornings with coffee for two.

I got good at it fast. Better than I should have been, maybe. Jayden would reach across the table and sign something sweet — *you look beautiful tonight* — and my hands would answer back before my brain even caught up. Seven years of muscle memory. My face did the work. My eyes stayed soft. Somewhere underneath all of it, I was counting days.

The suitcase lived at the back of the closet behind my winter coats. I'd packed it in layers over four days, a few things at a time, the way you'd move a bird's nest without disturbing it. Nothing dramatic. No jewelry he'd given me. Just the things that were actually mine.

Every night I lay in our bed and listened to the guest room.

His voice through the wall, low and warm. Hers, laughing at something. Once I heard him say *I'm going to paint it yellow, you always said yellow.* I stared at the ceiling and thought about yellow. I thought about it for a long time. Then I opened the banking app on my phone under the covers and moved another transfer to Payton's account in Sydney. Small amounts. Nothing that would flag. She'd told me the threshold and I stayed under it every time.

By morning he'd be back in our bed, and he'd kiss my temple before I pretended to wake up, and I'd turn and smile at him the way I always had.

I almost felt nothing. That was the part that scared me most.

Veronica got bolder around day nine.

I noticed it in increments. Her toiletries appearing on the guest bathroom shelf — a specific brand of dry shampoo, a rose-gold razor, a moisturizer that smelled like something expensive and floral. A mug moved from the left side of the cabinet to the right. A throw pillow from the guest room migrated to the living room couch. Small claims. The kind that say *I'm testing the edges of this space* without ever having to say it out loud.

I said nothing. I put the pillow back once, gently, and left it at that.

Then one afternoon in the hallway, she decided to be direct.

I was coming out of the bedroom. She was coming from the kitchen. We met in that narrow stretch of corridor where there's no room to pretend you didn't see someone, and she looked at me with the particular expression of a woman who has decided she no longer needs to be careful.

"He signs 'I love you' to you at dinner," she said, conversational, almost kind. "And then he comes to me at midnight." She tilted her head. "I almost feel sorry for you."

I adjusted the strap of my bag on my shoulder.

I walked past her.

I felt her watching me go and I kept my pace exactly even, all the way to the kitchen, where I poured a glass of water I didn't need and stood at the window until my heartbeat came down from wherever it had gone.

Six more days.

The medical records were the last thing I let myself look at.

I'd been putting it off. Some part of me already knew what I'd find and needed to stay functional long enough to get out before I let myself feel it. But on day eleven I sat down at my laptop while Jayden was at work and pulled up every file, every appointment note, every referral that had gone nowhere.

The pattern was clean once you knew to look for it.

The specialist in cochlear restoration who'd been "hard to get an appointment with" — I found his office number in thirty seconds. He'd had availability that entire year. The experimental procedure Jayden said he "didn't want to put me through" — I found the clinical trial I'd been quietly eligible for since year three. The follow-up he'd "forgotten" to schedule after my second audiologist visit — there was a note in the file, a callback request, never returned.

Every door that could have led me back to sound, quietly, expertly closed.

Not in a single moment. Not in a way that could be named easily. Just a gentle, consistent pressure applied at every turning point, year after year, by the man who signed *I love you* with hands I had trusted completely.

I sat with it for a while. The full shape of it.

Then I closed the laptop.

I went to the closet and checked the suitcase. Everything still there. Everything still mine.

Seven years of silence, and he had built the walls himself, brick by careful brick, while I stood inside them thinking I was home.

Five more days.

I made dinner. I set the table for two. When Jayden came home and signed *something smells amazing,* I smiled and handed him a fork.

My hands were perfectly still.
