Chapter 2

I didn't cry at the funeral. I think I used up all my tears in that hospital hallway, in front of a nurse who wouldn't look at me. By the time we lowered nothing into the ground — because there was nothing yet, just a plot I'd bought and paid for, waiting — I was empty. Hollowed out like a shell you find on the beach, the kind that used to have something alive inside it.

I went looking for the trust paperwork three days later. I needed the account number for the memorial plot, the one I'd set aside years ago, back when my mother was healthy and death was just a word in a will. Mason kept everything in his study now. That was new too. Everything of mine had somehow become something of his to keep.

The folder wasn't where I expected. I found it under a stack of quarterly reports, tucked into a manila sleeve that didn't have my mother's name on it at all.

It had Saige's.

**The Gomez-Clark Foundation for Women's Advancement.** Registered two months ago. I flipped through the pages with fingers that had gone numb, and there it was — my eighty thousand dollars. Money I'd saved myself, dollar by dollar, from my own inheritance, meant for one thing. A headstone. A plot under the oak tree my mother always pointed to when we drove past the cemetery. "That one," she used to say. "That one gets good light."

Saige's signature was on every page. Mason's authorization stamp sat beside it, small and official, like a period at the end of a sentence I never got to write.

I carried the folder into the living room. My hands were shaking so hard the papers made a sound like wings.

"What is this?" I asked.

Mason didn't look up from his phone right away. When he did, his face was calm. That was the worst part. He was never calm unless he'd already decided he was right.

"That money is doing more good in the world than sitting in a graveyard," he said.

"It was for her plot. For her headstone. Mason, that's — that's not a decision you get to make."

"You're making your grief everyone else's problem, Everly." He said it gently, like he was doing me a favor. "Saige's foundation has already helped dozens of women. Real women. Women who don't have a trust fund to fall back on."

I looked past him. Saige stood in the doorway, arms crossed loosely, her head tilted with an expression so practiced it almost looked real. Sorrow, soft around the edges. The face of a woman who was very sorry about the inconvenience of my pain.

"I know this is hard," she said quietly. "I really do. I just think your mom would want her memory to mean something. Not just — dirt."

I didn't have words for that. I just stood there holding paper that used to be a headstone and was now, apparently, a tax write-off with Saige's name stamped across it like a brand.

Three days after that, I heard the bracelet before I understood what it was.

I didn't hear it, actually. I felt it — a faint clatter through the floorboards, pearls hitting hardwood and rolling. I came around the corner into the master bedroom and found Saige crouched by my dresser, one hand pressed to her mouth.

"Oh my God, Everly, I'm so sorry — I was just grabbing a scarf for Mason and I bumped it, I didn't even see it there—"

The pearls kept rolling. My mother's pearls. The bracelet her own mother gave her, the one thing Mason hadn't managed to touch yet, because it wasn't in an account, it was in a drawer, tucked in velvet like something sacred.

"Why were you even in here?" My voice came out sharp, sharper than I meant. "This is my bedroom."

"It's our bedroom," Mason said from the doorway. I hadn't seen him come in. "And she said she's sorry."

"She was going through my dresser—"

"She was getting a scarf." His jaw tightened. "Do you hear yourself? You're being paranoid. Pathologically possessive, actually. Over a scarf."

"Over my mother's bracelet, Mason."

"It's a piece of jewelry." He said it flat, final, like he was closing a ledger. "Everything is a crisis with you. Everything is a wound you need someone to bow down and apologize for. I'm tired of it, Everly. I'm tired of managing your grief like it's a second job."

I got down on my knees and started collecting pearls off the floor, one by one, because if I stood there a second longer I was going to say something I couldn't take back. Saige didn't help me. She just watched, dabbing carefully at eyes that weren't actually producing tears.

That night, my card didn't work at the pharmacy. I already knew why before I even tried it. Mason had frozen everything — the joint account, the credit cards, even the small debit card tied to my personal savings that technically wasn't his to touch.

I counted the cash in my wallet under the kitchen light. Thirty-seven dollars.

I stood there a long time, listening to nothing, feeling the refrigerator hum through the soles of my feet, and understood, finally, completely, that I was a prisoner in a home I had paid for with my own two hands.
