My Husband Humiliated Me for His Pregnant Mistress Chapter 1

The Hall family estate looked like something out of a magazine. White lights wrapped around every column. A wreath the size of a car tire hung on the front door. Inside, the fireplace crackled, and the air smelled like pine and cinnamon.

I stood in the foyer holding a wrapped gift. My coat was still on. I hadn't taken it off yet because I wasn't sure I could stay.

Margaret Hall came around the corner from the dining room. She wore a cream sweater and pearls. Her smile was warm but careful. "Laura, sweetheart. You're here."

"Of course." I held up the gift. "Where should I put this?"

"Under the tree is fine." She gestured toward the living room. "Richard's by the fire. Come sit."

I followed her in. Richard Hall sat in his leather armchair, newspaper open, glasses perched on his nose. He looked up when I entered and nodded once. "Laura."

"Hi, Richard."

I set the gift under the tree and sat on the sofa. The cushions were stiff. Everything in this house was beautiful and stiff. Margaret fussed with a centerpiece on the side table—white roses and holly berries arranged just so. She moved one stem a quarter inch to the left, then back again.

The dining table was set for four. Candles. China. Grady's chair was empty.

No one said anything about it.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wedding ring. The metal was warm from my skin. I did it without thinking, the way you touch a bruise to see if it still hurts.

Margaret straightened and turned to me. Her voice was light. Too light. "Did Grady say he'd be late?"

I smiled. It didn't reach my eyes. I could feel that. "He mentioned a work thing. You know how it is this time of year."

Richard lowered his newspaper. Just an inch. He looked at me over the top of it. His face didn't move, but I felt the weight of his attention. Then he raised the paper again and said nothing.

The silence in the room pressed down like a hand on my chest. We all sat there not saying the thing we were thinking. Margaret adjusted another stem. Richard turned a page he wasn't reading. I kept my hands folded in my lap and my face smooth.

I reached into my purse. My fingers found my phone. I pulled it out and held it up. "I'll call him. Ask him to come home."

Margaret's hands stopped moving. "Oh, you don't have to—"

"It's our anniversary," I said. My voice was easy. Unhurried. "He should be here."

I dialed. The sound of the call connecting filled the quiet. Then, so casually it barely registered, I set the phone face-up on the marble side table between the sofa and Richard's chair.

Speaker on.

The ringtone echoed in the room. Once. Twice. Three times. Four.

Grady answered. His voice was loose. Bored. "Yeah?"

In the background, a woman laughed. It was bright and easy and intimate. The kind of laugh that belongs to someone who feels at home.

"Hey," I said. My voice was soft. "I'm at your parents' house. I was hoping you'd come home for Christmas dinner."

A beat of silence. Then the woman's voice cut through the speaker, clear as glass. "Is that the pathetic one again?"

Grady didn't correct her.

Margaret's hand froze mid-reach toward the centerpiece. Richard went completely still. Not tense. Still. The kind of stillness that makes the air feel thin.

Grady sighed. "Laura, I'm spending Christmas with someone who actually makes me feel like a man. Someone who doesn't just… sit there. You've been a barren waste of five years. Don't wait up."

The line stayed open. I could hear music in the background. Leyla said something I couldn't make out, and Grady laughed.

Tears ran down my face. I didn't wipe them. I didn't move. My voice, when I spoke, didn't shake.

"Do you remember our third anniversary?" I said. "You came home with lipstick on your collar. You told me it was from a client dinner. I believed you."

Silence on the other end.

"The Hall Industries gala last spring. You introduced Leyla as a scholarship recipient. You sat her at the head table. You put me three tables back with the accountants' wives."

I heard him breathe.

"Two years ago. The elevator at your office building. Power outage. I was stuck inside for forty-five minutes. I called you six times. You declined every one. You were at dinner with her."

My voice was flat. Steady. I wasn't pleading. I was reading a list.

"I spent forty-five minutes in the dark, Grady. Alone. I couldn't breathe. I thought I was going to die in there. You were with her."

The fire crackled. Margaret's face was white. Richard's knuckles were bone-pale where they gripped the armrest.

I looked at the phone. "Come home, Grady. Your parents want to see you."

I ended the call.

The room was so quiet I could hear my own heartbeat.
