Chapter 3

Salvatore Black's office was on the thirty-fourth floor of a midtown tower that looked like it had been designed to make people feel small. Floor-to-ceiling glass, gray stone, the kind of quiet that costs money to maintain. His assistant led me in without small talk, which I appreciated.

Salvatore was standing at the window when I walked in, hands in his pockets, looking out at the city like he owned a meaningful piece of it. He turned when he heard my heels on the stone floor.

He looked the same. A little sharper around the edges, maybe. The kind of man who got better at being himself the older he got.

"Claire Wheeler," he said. Not a greeting. More like confirmation.

"Salvatore." I set my briefcase on his conference table and opened it. "I'll keep this short."

"Take all the time you need."

I laid out the deed documentation first. Then the shell company registration — Wheeler Land Holdings LLC, established four years ago, six months before my wedding, under my name alone. Then the site survey. Then the projected revenue model I'd rebuilt from memory over three nights at The Mark, cross-referenced against current market comps.

He didn't say anything. He sat down, pulled the deed toward him, and read it. All of it. Line by line, the way I'd been told he always did. I stood and waited and watched the city out his window while he worked.

It took eleven minutes.

Then he looked up.

"I always knew you'd be the one to bring this to me," he said.

"Then you should have called sooner."

He laughed. It was a real laugh, not a boardroom laugh. It changed his face completely.

"Partnership stake," I said. "Full operational control of the residential wing stays with me. Black Industries handles commercial and infrastructure. We split the back end sixty-forty in your favor — I want the deal done fast, not argued over."

He tilted his head. "You're giving me sixty."

"I'm buying speed and credibility. You're the name that makes banks move. I'm the one who knows what to build." I met his eyes. "It's a fair trade."

He was quiet for a moment. Then he slid the deed back across the table toward me.

"Send the term sheet to my general counsel today," he said. "I'll have comments back by morning."

"I'll have the final draft back by afternoon."

The corner of his mouth moved. "I forgot how fast you work."

"I forgot too," I said. "I'm remembering."

The deal was sealed in forty-eight hours. I signed the partnership agreement on a Friday afternoon in Priya's office, using the same pen I'd used to sign the divorce papers. I didn't plan that. But it felt right.

On Thursday, my phone buzzed.

*Hey — can you swing by the dry cleaner on Hudson before you head back tonight? Ticket's on the kitchen counter. Thanks.*

Alexander. No punctuation on the thanks. The kind of text you send someone whose job it is to handle things.

I read it once. Then I set the phone face-down on the desk and went back to the land transfer contracts, which needed one more pass before I sent them to Salvatore's team.

I didn't respond. There was nothing to say.

Somewhere across the city, I knew how his week was going. Brunch spots with good lighting. A Birkin in whatever color Kehlani had decided she needed. An afternoon visit to her mother's apartment, Alexander sitting up straight on a stiff sofa, performing the role of devoted almost-son-in-law, saying the right things in the right tone. Auditioning.

He thought he had a month. He thought this was a controlled experiment with a predetermined outcome.

He had no idea what he'd already signed away.

The courthouse on Wednesday morning was quieter than I expected. Gray sky outside, the smell of old paper and floor wax inside. I wore a cream wool coat, my hair pinned back. No jewelry on my left wrist. I'd stopped wearing anything there.

Alexander's lawyer arrived two minutes late, a junior associate I'd never met, carrying a slim folder and looking slightly bored. He didn't introduce himself. He set the folder on the table, initialed where the paralegal indicated, and checked his phone twice.

He hadn't read the agreement. Alexander had told him it was a formality. I knew that because Priya had spoken to his senior counsel the day before, and the senior counsel had laughed and said, *Alex said just rubber-stamp it, it's a temp thing.*

The judge signed at 10:14 a.m.

I walked out into the cold alone. The sky was the color of old pewter. A cab splashed through slush at the curb and I stood there for a moment, not moving, just breathing the sharp winter air.

Claire Wheeler. Legally single. Every asset intact — the loft, the accounts, the land rights — exactly as the agreement Alexander drafted had specified.

He'd written the terms himself. He'd handed me the pen himself.

I thought about calling someone. I didn't. Instead I walked two blocks to a coffee shop I used to go to before I was Mrs. Ward, ordered a black coffee, and sat by the window watching the city move.

Tomorrow, I had a press conference to prepare for.

I opened my notebook and started writing.
