Chapter 4

My chest burned as I dragged my suitcase out of the inpatient wing. Every step felt like my ribs were cracking open, but I kept walking. No one came to help. No nurse asked if I was stable enough to leave.

“Marionette!”

I stopped.

They were all there at the bottom of the stairs. Mom. Dad. Silvia. And Kale.

Standing together like I was an outsider.

Mom looked flawless as always, makeup perfect, suit pressed, eyes shining with just the right amount of fake concern.

“Marion, what are you doing?” she asked, hurrying forward. “Why are you discharging yourself? You’re too weak. Go back inside.”

I stepped away before she could touch me. “Dr. Jones, just say what you came to say.”

Her smile twitched, then settled back into place. “The press is waiting in the conference room. We need to clarify this misunderstanding.”

“Misunderstanding?” I looked straight at her. “Which part? That I don’t actually have heart disease? Or that my husband gave my donor heart to that bitch?”

Dad frowned. “Watch your tone.”

Silvia stepped forward, eyes red and glossy. “Marion, please don’t be like this. If you’re angry, be angry at me. I’ll explain everything to the reporters. I’ll even leave. I can go back to the orphanage if that makes things easier.”

Before I could answer, Kale moved.

He pulled Silvia slightly behind him, one hand steady at her back.

“Stop talking like that… You’re not going anywhere.” Then he looked at me. And the softness disappeared. “You’ve embarrassed this entire hospital,” he said coldly. “Do you understand what you’ve done?”

I swallowed. “I told the truth.”

His jaw tightened. “Truth? You’re emotional and unstable right now.”

Mom nodded slightly, like he’d said something reasonable.

Kale walked up to me and grabbed my wrist.

Hard.

The sudden pressure made my chest spasm. I almost dropped the suitcase.

“Let go,” I whispered.

“We’re going to the conference room,” he said. No room for argument. Just command.

“I can walk.”

“Then walk.”

But he didn’t release me.

He dragged me down the hall anyway. My heartbeat went wild from the pain and humiliation. Nurses were staring. Interns were whispering.

Behind us I heard Silvia’s soft voice. “Kale… don’t be too rough.” but I saw how her lips twitched. How her smile widened.

“I won’t.”

He didn’t loosen his grip.

It hurt. Not just my wrist. Everything.

This was the man who once promised to protect me. The same hands that used to hold mine during tests were now forcing me forward like I was a problem to control.

Mom and Dad followed behind like this was all normal. Like I wasn’t their daughter.

“Okay,” I said quietly, “I’ll go.”

In the conference room, Silvia sat glued to Kale’s side.

He pulled her chair close to his. One arm rested behind her, fingers brushing her shoulder like he was shielding her from the whole world.

I sat alone at the far end of the table.

No one sat beside me.

Mom and Dad were behind them, quiet, watching, like this was some show they needed to survive.

A reporter started right away. “Dr. Kale Ashford, can you explain your decision at the time? Why was the donor heart reassigned?”

Kale took the microphone calmly. He looked composed. Professional. Untouchable.

“As a doctor, I made the most medically rational decision,” he said. “The patient who received the heart had a better projected recovery rate.”

The patient.

He didn’t even say her name.

He didn’t say my name either.

“My wife’s condition was complicated,” he continued. “There were risks.”

Risks.

Silvia’s fingers curled into his sleeve. He looked down at her immediately.

“It’s not your fault,” he said softly, brushing her hair back. “Don’t listen to the noise.”

The gentleness in his voice made my chest ache worse than the disease ever did.

A reporter turned to me. “Miss Marionette, do you agree with your husband’s explanation?”

The microphone was shoved toward my face.

“I agree,” I said quietly. “Dr. Kale Ashford is very responsible.”

The room relaxed for half a second.

Then I kept talking.

“He’s always responsible. Especially when it comes to Silvia.”

The silence came back fast.

Kale’s jaw tightened. “Marionette.”

I ignored him.

“You gave my heart to her,” I said, looking straight at him. “Not just as a doctor. As my husband. As her mistress!”

“Enough,” he said, voice low and sharp.

I kept going.

“You told me there were no matches. You held my hand and said we just had to wait. And then you signed the papers and gave it to her.”

Silvia started crying softly. Kale immediately pulled her closer.

“Stop attacking her,” he said to me, anger flashing in his eyes. “She just survived surgery.”

“I was surviving too,” I whispered.

He stood up suddenly, palm slamming on the table. “You’re being emotional again,” he snapped. “This is exactly why I didn’t want you speaking.”

Mom shifted behind him but said nothing. Dad looked away. I felt my heart racing, vision blurring at the edges.

“You always protect her,” I said. “When she moved into our house, you gave her my room because she said she liked the sunlight. When I asked why, you said I was being unreasonable.”

Kale’s face hardened. “It was just a room.”

“It was my room.”

“It’s not about you all the time,” he shot back.

The reporters were scribbling fast now.

I laughed weakly. “It’s never about me.”

I looked at the cameras.

“My husband chose my adopted sister over me,” I said slowly. “My parents supported him. So tell me, if a doctor can’t even save his own wife because he prefers someone else, would you trust him with your life?”

“Marionette, shut up,” Kale warned, stepping toward me.

Silvia clutched his arm. “Kale, please don’t fight…”

His voice softened instantly. “I’m not fighting. I’m here.”

Then he looked at me again, all steel. “Sit down.”

My heart started pounding wildly. It hurt so bad I couldn’t breathe right. I tried to steady myself but my legs gave out.

I collapsed onto the floor.

Someone screamed.

I tasted blood and the reporters rushed closer with cameras. Flash after flash.

Mom suddenly panicked. “Stop filming! She’s exaggerating! She just wants attention!”

Dad tried to block the view.

Kale knelt beside me, but his face wasn’t panic. It was frustration.

“Marionette!” he said sharply. “Don’t do this! Enough acting like some FAMAS actress!”

I smiled at him, blood on my lips. For once, everyone could see.

Dr. Antonio pushed through the crowd with the defibrillator. He pressed it to my chest. Once. Twice.

“Clear!”

I think I smiled.

At least the cameras caught everything.

“Marionette Jones Ashford,” someone said in a distant voice. “Female. Twenty five years old. Time of death, 10:06 AM.”

And just like that, I wasn’t a problem anymore.
