Chapter 5

Zoya stood at the window of Elliot's office—her office now, really, though the nameplate hadn't changed yet—and looked down at the street forty-three floors below. Tiny people. Tiny cars. Tiny problems.

She took out her phone. Scrolled to a contact she hadn't called in six months.

Jakai answered on the first ring. "Yeah."

"I need you to do something," she said.

Silence. Then: "What kind of something?"

"The kind we talked about. Before."

Another pause. Longer. She could hear him breathing. "When?"

"Soon. I'll tell you exactly when. But you need to be ready. I'm sending you credentials. Mount Sinai. Service entrance access. Memorize the badge number. Don't write it down."

"Zoya—"

"Do you trust me?"

He didn't answer right away. She waited. Let the silence do its work.

"Yeah," he said finally. "I trust you."

"Then be ready."

She hung up. Deleted the call from her log. Looked back out the window.

Somewhere across town, Charles Garza was probably having lunch. Probably talking to his lawyers. Probably thinking he still controlled the board.

He didn't.

Not anymore.

Diana Garza's Park Avenue apartment smelled like lilies and money. The kind of space where every piece of furniture had a story and every story ended with an auction house. Twenty women in designer dresses balanced champagne flutes and made conversation that sounded like music but meant nothing.

Zoya arrived first. Diana kissed both her cheeks and introduced her as "Elliot's dear friend." Zoya smiled. Accepted a glass of champagne. Positioned herself near the fireplace where everyone would have to pass her.

Sabrina arrived twenty minutes later.

The room didn't go silent. That would have been too obvious. But the volume dropped. Just slightly. Just enough.

Diana swept across the room with her arms out. "Sabrina! Darling! You look wonderful. So brave of you to come. You've always been so brave. After everything."

Sabrina accepted the air-kiss. Smiled. "Thank you for having me, Diana."

"Of course! You're family. You'll always be family." Diana lowered her voice. Not enough. "No matter what."

Sabrina's smile didn't change. She accepted a glass of sparkling water from a passing server. Turned slightly. Made eye contact with Zoya across the room.

Zoya raised her champagne glass. A small gesture. A toast to nothing.

Sabrina raised her water glass in return. Then she turned away and joined a conversation near the window.

Zoya watched her. The way she stood. The way she listened. The way she didn't flinch.

Interesting.

Sabrina spent the luncheon at the edges. She didn't eat much. Just moved from group to group. Asked quiet questions. Listened more than she spoke.

She noticed which board members' wives were present. Patricia Kellerman. Susan Chen. Margaret Rothstein. She noticed who spoke to Zoya and who didn't. She noticed who looked away when Sabrina entered a conversation and who held her gaze.

She noticed everything.

When the luncheon ended, Diana walked her to the door. "You must come to the house in the Hamptons this summer. We'll make it just like old times."

"That sounds lovely," Sabrina said.

She took the elevator down alone. Walked three blocks before getting into the town car. Didn't look back.

The email came at eleven PM. Margaret Voss. Subject line: *Threshold Confirmed.*

I opened it standing up. Read it twice.

*Sabrina—We have crossed 34%. Documentation is airtight. All tranches processed through compliant channels. Combined with Charles Garza's proxy (22%), you hold 56% of voting shares. You have full legal authority to call an emergency board session under Section 7.3(b) of the corporate charter. Recommend we move quickly. Elliot returns from Berlin in four days. —MV*

I set the phone down. Walked to the window. The city looked the same as it always did. Lights everywhere. People living their lives.

I opened my laptop. Created a new document. Typed at the top: *Emergency Motion—Garza Group Board of Directors.*

Then I wrote:

*Whereas the undersigned shareholders, holding 56% of voting shares, have lost confidence in current executive leadership…*

*Whereas recent operational decisions have resulted in significant institutional knowledge loss and shareholder value erosion…*

*Whereas the Board has a fiduciary duty to act in the best interests of the Company…*

*Be it resolved that Elliot Garza be removed as Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately, and that interim leadership be appointed pending a formal search process.*

I read it once. Saved it. Closed the laptop.

I didn't sleep.

I sat in the chair by the window and watched the city lights blur and sharpen as cars passed below. I thought about the girl in the photograph. The one at the garden party. The one who believed love was enough.

I thought about the hospital room ten years ago. The gray tile floor. Elliot kneeling. His face in his hands.

I thought about the baby I lost five months ago. The one he never knew about. The one I drove myself to the ER for at three in the morning because he was in Boston with her.

I thought about Rosa crying in the kitchen.

I thought about the Matisse that used to hang in my dining room.

I thought about Zoya's ring catching the light.

When the sun came up, I opened my laptop again. Composed an email to Margaret Voss.

*Serve notice. Emergency session in 72 hours. Section 7.3(b). No exceptions.*

I read it once. Sent it.

Then I stood up. Walked to the closet. Pulled out the navy suit I'd worn to my father's funeral. The one that made me look like I meant business.

I laid it on the bed.

Outside, the city woke up. Inside, I folded my hands and stood very still.

It was time.
