My Husband Forced Our Daughter to Save His Nephew Chapter 1

The kitchen clock read 12:45 AM. The house in Arlington was completely silent, except for the hum of the refrigerator.

I sat at the table under the dim yellow light, stitching a little sunflower patch onto Leyla’s denim jacket. She had torn the elbow on the preschool playground that afternoon. My eyes burned from the strain, but I kept my needle moving.

The front door clicked open.

Derek walked in. He wore his Army combat uniform. His heavy boots thumped against the floorboards. He was three hours late.

He didn’t apologize. He didn’t kiss my cheek. He just hung his cap on the peg and pulled out a chair opposite me. The smell of cold air and motor oil followed him.

"Callum has leukemia," Derek said flatly.

My hands stopped. The needle pricked my thumb. I dropped the jacket and looked at him. "What? Oh god. Derek, is he okay?"

"It’s aggressive," he said. His voice was level, almost clinical. "We’re starting treatments right away. The family schedule and our finances are going to center on him now. That’s just how it has to be."

My heart ached for my four-year-old nephew. "Of course," I said quickly, reaching across the table to touch his arm. "I can cook meals for Bianca. I can drive Callum to the clinic, babysit, whatever she needs—"

Derek pulled his arm away. "I’ve got it covered."

"Derek, we can share the load—"

"I moved twenty thousand out of our savings into Bianca’s account today," he cut in. "She needs rent covered, and the copays are high."

My chest tightened. "Twenty thousand? Derek, that was our entire emergency cushion. Leyla’s preschool tuition is due next week."

"Callum is my brother's son," he said, staring right through me. "Mark died for this country. I promised I would protect his family. This isn't up for debate."

Over the next two weeks, Derek vanished from our lives.

He was technically living in our house, but he was never there. He missed Leyla’s spring dance recital. Leyla stood on stage in her pink tutu, looking at the empty seat in row four, her lower lip trembling. The next day, he forgot to pick her up from school. I got the panicked call from her teacher while stuck in bridge traffic.

On Friday, Leyla brought home a drawing. It showed a tall woman with brown hair, a tiny girl holding a stuffed bunny, and a yellow sun.

"Where’s Daddy?" I asked gently, kneeling beside her.

"Daddy lives at Aunt Bianca's," Leyla whispered, looking down at her shoes.

Her teacher had clipped a note to the backpack: *Leyla seems quiet and sad lately. Is everything all right at home?*

I put the note on the kitchen counter next to Derek's keys. It sat there for five days. Derek walked past it every morning and never picked it up.

On Sunday night, he called me into the living room. He stood by the cold fireplace with his hands behind his back, standing at parade rest. It was the posture he used when briefing his junior officers.

"Callum’s oncologist spoke to us," Derek said. "His counts aren't responding to the chemo. He needs a bone marrow match."

"Did they test you?" I asked. "Or the national registry?"

"We checked. No match. The doctor recommended a savior sibling."

I blinked. "A what?"

"A donor child. It needs to share Callum’s paternal genetics to ensure compatibility." Derek looked at me without blinking. "Bianca and I are going to do IVF. I’ll provide the sample."

The room tilted. My ears began to ring.

"You want to have a baby with your brother's widow?" My voice barely came out.

"It’s a medical procedure, Sabrina. It's science. We create an embryo, carry it to term, and use the cord blood and marrow to save Mark's boy."

"No," I choked out, tears finally spilling over. "No, Derek. You cannot have a child with another woman. You are my husband! You have a daughter right up those stairs!"

Derek’s face hardened into stone. His jaw clenched.

"A little boy is dying," he snapped, his voice dropping into a harsh, disgusted whisper. "And you are sitting here making it about your petty jealousy. You make me sick."

He turned on his heel and slammed the bedroom door.

I didn't cry. The tears stopped cold, like water turning to ice.

At 2:00 AM, I slipped into the bathroom and locked the door. I sat on the tile floor, pulled out my phone, and searched: *divorce attorneys Arlington VA*.

I looked up at the mirror. Dark circles bruised my eyes. My cheekbones looked sharp and hollow. But my eyes were steady. The woman who begged for her husband's scraps was gone.

I spent the next hour gathering what I needed. I tiptoed through the dark house, snapping photos of tax returns, the house deed, and car titles.

The next morning, right after dropping Leyla off, I drove across town. I opened a new checking account at a bank Derek never used. I deposited five hundred dollars.

Then I sat in my car and called Chloe Miller in Seattle.

Chloe had been my roommate in college. She answered on the second ring. "Sabrina? Hey!"

"Chloe," I said, keeping my voice from shaking. "Things are really bad here. If Leyla and I need to get away... do you have room on your couch?"

Chloe didn't ask questions. She didn't hesitate. "I have a spare bedroom. Get on a plane whenever you need to. The door is open."

"Thank you," I whispered.

I drove straight to the lawyer’s office in Alexandria. I paid the retainer fee using my new debit card. I signed the initial paperwork without a single tremor in my hand.

When I went home that afternoon, I cooked Derek’s dinner. I folded his laundry. I kept my mouth shut and my head down.

I knew how Derek operated. If I fought him, he locked down like a bunker. If I complained, Bianca cried on the phone, and Derek blamed me more.

So I let him think he had won. I let him think I had surrendered.

In reality, I was just waiting for the right moment to disappear.
