Chapter 5

Dax sat in his car outside Mount Sinai with his phone in one hand and his surgical bag in the passenger seat.

The screen showed Sandra's contact. His thumb hovered over the call button. He didn't press it. Not yet. She would reach out if something changed. That was the plan.

He had briefed the clinic director that morning. A woman named Dr. Patel. She ran a small facility in Connecticut that specialized in trauma recovery. Domestic abuse survivors. Patients who needed to disappear.

'No names,' Dax had said. 'No records that can be traced. She'll come in critical condition. Possibly surgical. I'll handle the procedure myself.'

Dr. Patel had looked at him for a long moment. Then she nodded. 'How soon?'

'I don't know,' he'd admitted. 'But when it happens, it will happen fast.'

He had wired the funds that afternoon. Enough to cover a month of private care. A suite on the third floor with a window that opened. A door with no lock.

Now he sat in the dark and stared at his phone and waited.

The city moved around him. Taxis. Sirens. People walking dogs. The world kept turning like nothing was wrong.

He thought about the last time he'd seen Lilah. Two years ago. A hospital fundraiser. She had worn a pale blue dress. Barrett had stood beside her with one hand on her back, smiling for the cameras. Dax had watched from across the room. He'd seen the way her smile didn't reach her eyes. The way she flinched when Barrett leaned close to whisper something.

He should have said something then.

He gripped the steering wheel until his knuckles went white.

His phone buzzed.

He looked down. A text from Sandra.

*She's stable tonight. Resting. I'll keep watch.*

He typed back: *Thank you.*

He set the phone on the dash. He leaned his head back against the seat. He didn't close his eyes. He just stared at the hospital lights in the distance and breathed.

He would not let her die.

Not this time.

---

I lay on my back and stared at the ceiling.

The pain was worse tonight. It radiated from my abdomen up into my ribs. Every breath felt like it cost something.

I had stopped pressing the call button. No one came anymore. Or if they did, they just checked the IV and left.

I thought about the note. The one Sandra had slipped me. The one I kept hidden in the spine of the paperback on the shelf.

*I'm here. I'm watching. You are not alone.*

I wanted to believe it. I wanted to believe someone was watching. That someone cared.

But I had spent five years believing Barrett would see me. That he would remember the girl who threw herself in front of a knife. That he would wake up one morning and realize he loved me.

I had been wrong.

I thought about Kenia's visit yesterday. The way she'd sat on the edge of my bed and told me about the divorce attorney. About the June wedding. About how useful I'd been.

I thought about Barrett standing in his office, pressing the button for security, not even looking at me as they dragged me away.

I thought about the woman in the window. The one I didn't recognize.

I reached under the mattress. My fingers found the note. I pulled it out and unfolded it in the dark.

The handwriting was steady. Confident. Real.

I read it one more time.

Then I folded it carefully and tucked it back into the book.

I sat up slowly. The pain made me gasp. I pressed one hand against my belly and waited for it to pass.

It didn't.

I looked around the room. Cream walls. A window that didn't open. A phone with no dial tone. A door with a guard outside.

I had been a prisoner before. In that penthouse. In that marriage. In the life Barrett had built around me like a cage.

But this was different.

This was the moment I understood I would never leave this room unless I made a choice.

I thought about the scars on my wrists. The ones from five years ago. The night I threw myself in front of that knife.

I had saved his life.

I had given him everything.

And he had taken it. All of it. And asked for more.

I stood. My legs shook. I walked to the bathroom. The fluorescent light buzzed overhead. I looked at myself in the mirror.

Gaunt. Hollow-eyed. Hair tangled. A stranger.

I opened the drawer under the sink. There were bandages. Gauze. Antiseptic wipes.

And scissors.

I picked them up. The metal was cold in my palm.

I thought about Dax's note. *You are not alone.*

I thought about the woman in the blue dress at the fundraiser. The one who used to believe in happy endings.

I thought about the girl who took five knives and thought it would be enough.

I closed my eyes.

And I made my decision.

Not in desperation.

In clarity.

I would not be useful anymore.

I would not be a vessel.

I would not be a debt.

I would be free.

I opened my eyes. I looked at the scissors. I looked at my wrists.

And I understood, finally, what freedom cost.
