Chapter 1

On our third anniversary, I lit the candles myself.

The penthouse glowed. I had designed every inch of it. The brass pendant lights over the dining table. The long oak shelves. The window seat where I sketched at night while Manhattan blinked below. Tonight I set out the good china. His favorite steak rested under foil.

Three years. I wanted to remind him of us. Of the girl he married. Of the baby we lost three weeks ago. I still cried about it in the shower, where no one could hear.

The elevator chimed at nine. Collin Jensen walked in with his phone pressed to his ear. He didn't see the candles. He didn't see me.

"Handle it," he said, and hung up.

"Happy anniversary," I said softly.

He looked at the table. Then at me. His jaw tightened. "I sold the penthouse."

The words didn't land at first. "You what?"

"The buyer takes possession in seventy-two hours. Pack what you need. We'll stay at the family place uptown for now."

"Collin, I built this place. I picked every tile."

"Something came up." He loosened his tie with one sharp tug. "It's done, Stella."

He walked past the steak. Past me. The candle flames bent in his wake.

That night I opened the bedroom safe to put my earrings away. My ring box was there. The velvet slot was empty.

I had drawn that ring myself. A thin platinum band. A pale diamond set like a closed bud. Collin had it made from my sketch. Back then, I thought that meant he saw me.

I found him in the hall. "Where's my ring?"

He didn't slow down. "Being cleaned."

"You didn't tell me."

"I'm telling you now."

His study door clicked shut. Then the lock turned.

I stood alone in the bedroom I would lose in three days. I pressed my bare ring finger into my palm until it hurt. The city hummed outside, cold and bright. For the first time, I let myself think it.

Something was very wrong.

The Jensen house uptown smelled like old money and floor polish. Four days after we moved in, the doorbell rang during a thunderstorm.

A woman stood in the foyer. Soaked. Pale. Beautiful in a way that made you forget to breathe. She clutched a worn brown suitcase with both hands. A heavy scent rolled off her. White lilies. My throat itched at once.

"Collin," she whispered. Her voice cracked like thin glass. "I'm sorry. I had nowhere else to go."

I heard him on the stairs. Then I heard him stop.

"Bridget?"

I knew the name. Everyone in his family did. Bridget Sullivan. His college love. The girl who died. The girl his grandmother, Ruth Jensen, never let anyone mention at dinner.

"They kept me overseas," she sobbed. "I owed them money. Bad people. I barely got away."

Collin crossed the marble in three strides. His hands shook as he cupped her face. I had never seen them shake. Not at our wedding. Not in the hospital when the doctor told me our baby was gone.

"You're alive," he breathed. "God. You're alive."

She looked past his shoulder. At me. Just for a second. Her tears paused long enough for a small smile.

"Who is this?" she asked.

"My wife." He didn't turn around. "Clara, make up the guest suite. She's staying."

The housekeeper nodded and hurried off. He didn't ask me. He didn't even look at me.

Two days later, he called from the office. "There's a contract in my briefcase. Blue folder. Scan it to me."

The briefcase sat on his desk. I found the folder. Underneath it was a pill bottle.

The same white bottle he handed me every morning with my orange juice. The same one he tapped against my glass while he kissed my forehead and said, "Take care of our baby."

I turned it over.

It wasn't prenatal vitamins. The label was clear. Small black letters. A hormonal contraceptive.

The room went silent. I couldn't hear the rain. I couldn't hear my own heart.

Every morning. Three years. He watched me swallow them. He watched me hope.

The bottle rattled in my hand. Half empty. I set it back exactly where it was, under the folder. I scanned the contract. I sent it.

Then I went to the bathroom and threw up.

The Meridian Club sat on Fifth Avenue behind a door with no sign. Jensen business happened there, over lunch and whiskey. Collin had asked me to join him and a client at one.

I came at twelve-thirty.

The hostess led me down a dim hall of leather and gold sconces. I heard his voice before I saw the alcove. I stopped behind a tall lacquered screen.

"The settlement terms can stay vague," his attorney said. "Assuming you want a clean exit eventually."

"I do." Collin sounded bored. "Stella was a placeholder. My grandmother needed a wife at the table. Stella kept her quiet and kept her eyes off Bridget's memory."

"And the Grant family?"

"Her father handed her over cheap. It helped me against Ruth. That's all it ever was." Ice clinked in his glass. "A transaction. From the first day."

I didn't move. I didn't breathe. My fingers found my bare ring finger and pressed down.

Chairs scraped. Footsteps passed the screen, so close I smelled his cologne.

They didn't see me.

They never had.
