Chapter 1

The clock above the bar read 12:47 a.m. I dragged the mop across the marble floor of the VIP lounge, my shoulders burning. The bucket water was gray. My knees ached. I'd been here since six that evening—my regular shift plus volunteer overtime. Forty extra dollars. That would cover the next batch of Niko's medication. The pharmacist always looked at me with pity when I counted out crumpled bills.

I hadn't eaten since yesterday morning. Half a bagel. My stomach had stopped growling hours ago. Now it just felt hollow.

The club was almost empty. A few stragglers lingered near the bar. I kept my head down and worked my way toward the back corridor. My hands were raw. The gloves they gave us were too thin. I had scars across my knuckles from three years of this—cleaning, scrubbing, polishing. My wedding ring was gone. I'd sold it eighteen months ago to pay for Niko's hospital visit.

I thought about him lying in our apartment right now. Pale. Weak. Coughing into tissues. He'd been getting worse lately. The cancer was spreading, the doctor said. We couldn't afford the new treatment. I'd already sold everything—my jewelry, my clothes, my mother's watch. I donated blood twice a week. The nurse told me I shouldn't come back so often, but I needed the money.

I loved him. That was the only thing that mattered.

Then I heard laughter.

Rich, full laughter. The kind that comes from a man who owns the room. It echoed from behind a half-closed door at the end of the corridor—one of the private lounges reserved for members only. I wasn't supposed to be back here yet, but Marcus, the club manager, had told me to finish the VIP section before I left.

I moved closer, mop in hand. The door was cracked open. Golden light spilled out. I heard voices. Men talking. The clink of glasses.

And then I heard him.

"The cancer diagnosis was the masterstroke," Niko said. His voice was smooth, confident, nothing like the weak rasp I heard every night. "She sold everything. I mean everything. The Roberts heiress, scrubbing toilets to save me."

More laughter.

I pressed against the wall. My heart slammed against my ribs. I leaned forward and looked through the gap.

Niko sat in a leather armchair, one leg crossed over the other. He wore a charcoal suit—tailored, expensive, perfect. His skin glowed with health. His hair was styled. A tumbler of scotch sat in his hand, amber liquid catching the light. Around him, five men in similar suits lounged on sofas, grinning.

"How long are you going to keep it up?" one of them asked.

"As long as it takes," Niko said. He swirled his drink. "Three years so far. She pushed Jazmine off that balcony. She deserves every second of this."

"And the bankruptcy?"

"Fake. Obviously." Niko laughed. "I moved the assets offshore two weeks before I told her we were broke. She believed it immediately. Didn't even question it."

Someone raised a glass. "To the long con."

"To Elisa," Niko said, smirking. "The most devoted wife in Manhattan."

They all drank.

The mop fell from my hands. It clattered against the marble—loud, sharp, final.

I stepped back. My legs didn't feel like mine. The hallway tilted. I turned and walked—fast, then faster—back toward the main floor. My breath came in short gasps. My vision blurred.

Three years.

Three years of selling my blood. Three years of scrubbing floors until my hands bled. Three years of going hungry so he could eat. Three years of believing I was saving him.

And it was all a lie.

I made it halfway across the lounge before I stopped. A man in a navy suit stood near one of the tables, pointing at the floor by his shoe. There was a water stain.

"You missed a spot," he said.

I stared at him. I couldn't speak.

"Are you deaf?" He stepped closer. His breath smelled like whiskey. "I said you missed a—"

His hand came fast. It cracked across my cheek. My head snapped to the side. Pain exploded through my face.

I stumbled. My hip hit the edge of a table.

"Hey!" Marcus appeared from nowhere, grabbing the man's arm. "Sir, please—"

"She's incompetent," the man snapped. "Look at this floor. Look at her."

Marcus turned to me. His expression was hard. "Elisa. You're done. Go."

"I—"

"You're fired. And I'm docking tonight's pay for the incident. Get out."

He shoved an envelope into my hands—thinner than it should have been—and pointed toward the service exit.

I walked out into the cold.

The air bit through my thin jacket. My cheek throbbed. I pressed my fingers against it and felt the heat, the swelling starting already. I walked for blocks. I don't remember the route. I just walked.

When I reached our apartment building, I stood outside for a long time. The lights were on in our window. Fourth floor. I could see the glow.

I climbed the stairs slowly. My key stuck in the lock. I pushed the door open.

Niko was in bed, propped against pillows. He wore his threadbare pajamas—the ones with the hole in the sleeve. A box of tissues sat on the nightstand. Next to it, the orange pill bottle. He coughed into his hand as I walked in, a wet, rattling sound.

"Elisa," he said. His voice was weak, breathy. He reached toward me. "I was worried. You're so late."

I looked at him.

Really looked.

The pale complexion—makeup, maybe, or just clever lighting. The cough—perfectly timed, never when he thought I wasn't listening. The pill bottle—I'd never actually seen him take one. He always did it in the bathroom, alone.

Three years of performance.

"I'm fine," I said quietly.

He tried to sit up, wincing like it hurt. "You look upset. Did something happen?"

I walked past him into the bathroom and locked the door. I turned on the light and stared at my reflection.

My face was gaunt. Hollow cheeks. Dark circles. My hair was thin, brittle. My hands were covered in scars—white lines across my palms, my knuckles, my fingers. Stress fractures that never healed right.

I looked like a ghost.

Behind the door, Niko coughed again.

I closed my eyes.

And for the first time in three years, I felt nothing.
