Chapter 3

For the next two weeks, I became a ghost in my own house.

I moved quietly. I smiled when Grant walked into the room. I let him bring me glasses of water and kiss my forehead. Every time his lips touched my skin, my stomach twisted in disgust, but I didn't flinch.

I was waiting. And I was hunting.

I downloaded an encrypted recording app on a cheap burner phone. Grant thought I spent my days drugged on painkillers, sleeping through the afternoon. But whenever he shut the door to his study, I dragged myself across the floor on my elbows and slid the burner under the hallway console table.

I caught three calls.

In the first one, Grant laughed about my broken bone. In the second, he promised Julissa he would take her to St. Barts once my career was officially over. In the third, his voice turned ice-cold.

"Julian Hale has the clinic prepped," Grant had told her through the receiver. "He'll botch the second surgery. Make it look like the tibia didn't heal right on its own. Nobody questions medical complications."

My blood ran cold, but my hands stayed steady.

Whenever Grant left his phone on the kitchen counter to take a shower, I struck. Steam filled the hallway, and I hopped over on my good foot. I snapped quick, clean pictures of his screen.

Texts from *Julissa*: *“Can’t wait until she’s out of the picture for good.”*

Bank transfers to an offshore account. Receipts for Cartier bracelets I had never seen.

Late at night, with the bedroom door locked, I sat in bed with my laptop glow dimmed to the lowest setting. I pulled up Julissa’s Instagram. I took screenshots of everything before she could delete them.

The custom molding of Grant's downtown loft in her selfies. The expensive champagne. And Leo.

My sweet, beautiful boy.

Every time I zoomed in on his little face in the background of her photos—his ribs showing beneath a dirty t-shirt, dark purple bruises on his frail arms—a sob caught in my throat. I swallowed it down. Tears wouldn't save my son. Cold proof would.

I made a spreadsheet. In Column A, I entered the dates of Grant’s supposed "amnesia episodes." In Column B, I entered Julissa’s geotagged vacation posts.

They matched down to the exact hour.

It was a timeline of betrayal. Five years of calculated cruelty, laid out in neat black rows.

My parents flew in from Seattle on a rainy Friday.

My mother, Eleanor, burst into tears the moment she saw my cast. My father stood stiffly beside her, his jaw clenched tight.

I didn't tell them the truth yet. I couldn't risk them confronting Grant and blowing my plan. Instead, I put on the performance of a lifetime.

I curled up on the sofa. I let my shoulders shake. I forced tears into my eyes and let my voice break.

"Grant," I whispered, clutching his hand in front of my parents. "I can't be here right now. Every time I look at those stairs, I panic. I can't sleep. The city is too loud."

Grant frowned. His fingers tightened on mine. He wanted me in New York. He needed me here so Dr. Hale could ruin my leg next week.

"Sweetheart, you need your doctors here," Grant said gently. His face was full of fake concern. "The specialists in Manhattan are the best in the world."

"She's coming home with us, Grant," my father cut in. His tone left no room for debate. "She needs peace and quiet."

I looked up at Grant with wide, pathetic eyes. "Please, honey. Just for a couple of weeks. Mom can cook for me. You won't have to carry me around. You can focus on your work without worrying about taking care of a cripple."

I watched his face closely.

Right there, behind his brown eyes, the gears turned. He recalculated. If I went to Seattle, he wouldn't have to hide. He could bring Julissa straight into our bed. He could enjoy total freedom, and he could always drag me to New Jersey later.

"If that's what you need to heal, my love," Grant said softly. He stroked my hair. "Whatever makes you feel safe."

He even loaded my bags into the trunk of the yellow cab. When I slid into the back seat, he leaned in and kissed my cheek.

"Call me the second you land," he whispered.

"I will," I said.

The cab pulled away from the curb. The brownstone shrank in the side mirror.

I didn't look back.

***

My childhood bedroom in Seattle smelled of cedar and rain. Outside the window, gray clouds hung low over Puget Sound.

I didn't rest. I propped my cast on a pillow and opened my laptop.

Through an old friend from the conservatory whose brother worked in law enforcement, I got the private contact for NYPD Detective Marcus Vance. He handled high-profile domestic violence and fraud cases.

I didn't call to cry. I sent him a digital bomb.

I sent an encrypted link with ninety-two files. The audio of Grant and Julissa planning my surgery. The lily receipt. The spreadsheet matching his fake illnesses to their vacations. And the high-resolution images of Leo standing in Julissa’s Brooklyn apartment.

Ten minutes later, my phone buzzed. A New York area code.

"Mrs. Shaw?" Detective Vance’s voice was deep and razor-sharp. "I'm looking at your files right now."

"Detective," I said, my voice completely steady. "My husband didn't lose our son in a park. He gave him to his mistress. And next week, they planned to permanently disable my leg at an illegal clinic in New Jersey."

A long silence hung over the line. I heard paper rustling on his desk.

"Mrs. Shaw, this isn't just an affair," Vance said quietly. "If this boy is Leo, this is child abuse, felony kidnapping, and conspiracy. You built an open-and-shut dossier here."

"I want my son back," I said. "And I want them in prison."

"Stay in Seattle," Vance ordered. "Act normal. Don't tip him off. I'm securing warrants for the Brooklyn apartment and that Jersey clinic today."

"Thank you, Detective."

After hanging up, I dialed the Seattle Police Department. I filed a domestic safety report, giving them Grant's name, description, and car rental alerts.

If Grant Shaw tried to come after me on the West Coast, he would walk straight into handcuffs.

I leaned back against the headboard and closed my eyes.

Grant thought he had broken me. He thought I was hiding in the corner like an injured animal.

He had no idea the trap was already snapping shut.
