Chapter 1

The stairs in our Upper West Side brownstone were made of polished mahogany. I had walked up and down them a thousand times.

On Tuesday night, Grant stood at the top landing.

His eyes were completely vacant. He stared right through me, swaying slightly on his feet. It was the look he always got before one of his "episodes." The doctors called it intermittent dissociative amnesia. A rare condition. A tragedy, everyone said.

"Grant?" I reached out, my hand inches from his sweater. "Grant, honey, it's me. Evie. You're home."

"Evie?" he muttered. His voice was a flat, raspy whisper. "Where... who..."

"I'm right here," I said softly, stepping up.

Then his gaze locked onto mine. Just for a fraction of a second, the fog cleared. His eyes were sharp, cold, and entirely present.

Before I could breathe, both of his hands slammed into my chest.

The drop was violent. I hit the edge of the fifth step, tumbled backwards, and crashed hard onto the hardwood floor below. My left leg folded beneath me. A sickening *crack* echoed through the foyer, followed by an explosion of white-hot agony.

I screamed. I couldn't stop screaming. My tibia was snapped. In that single, sickening second, my upcoming season as principal dancer at the New York City Ballet was dead.

Grant came scrambling down the stairs on his hands and knees.

"Evie! Oh God, Evie!" He fell beside me, tears spilling down his cheeks. He clutched his head like a madman. "What happened? Did I do this? Somebody help! Call 911!"

Our neighbors burst through the front door minutes later. Grant sobbed into his hands, rocking back and forth. The paramedics loaded me onto a stretcher, and the red flashing lights painted the brownstone walls.

At Lenox Hill Hospital, the pain medication made the room hum.

It was 2:00 a.m. The cast on my left leg felt like a block of concrete. I couldn't sleep. The throbbing in my bone was too loud. I picked up my phone from the bedside table, scrolling through Instagram just to drown out the noise in my head.

I don't know why I searched her name. Maybe it was an old dancer's instinct.

Julissa Payne.

She had been my fiercest rival at the conservatory years ago. She lacked the discipline for lead roles, but she possessed endless spite. I opened her profile.

It was full of filtered photos. Expensive dinners. Cartier bracelets. A silk robe tossed over a leather armchair. My thumb froze. That armchair was custom-made. The crown molding in the background had the exact same decorative pattern as the downtown studio Grant rented for his "consulting work."

My heart gave a heavy, nervous thump.

I kept scrolling. Three weeks back, Julissa had posted a mirror selfie in a hallway, complaining about dirty laundry. But in the shadowed background, near a closed doorway, stood a little boy.

He was tiny. Far too thin for five years old. Faint purple bruises marked his bare forearms. He was looking straight toward the camera with wide, terrified eyes.

Those eyes.

The shape of the brow. The curve of his lower lip.

My breath caught in my throat. The room spun.

*Leo.*

Five years ago, my six-month-old baby had vanished from his stroller during one of Grant’s amnesiac walks in Central Park. The police called it a kidnapping. The trail went cold. I had wept until my tear ducts ran dry. Grant had fallen into a deep depression, blaming his broken brain.

My hands trembled so violently I almost dropped the phone. I took a screenshot. Then another.

I opened my calendar and my old emails. I stayed awake all night, digging through the dark.

I cross-referenced Julissa’s posts with Grant’s timeline. Every single weekend Grant had supposedly suffered a "dissociative fugue state" and disappeared, Julissa had posted photos of hotel suites and expensive champagne. Grant’s sudden business trips matched her beach vacations to the exact day.

And the police report. Grant was the only witness the day Leo vanished.

By 4:00 a.m., the whole sickening truth laid bare before me.

There was no neurological illness. There had never been any amnesia.

Grant was sleeping with Julissa. He didn't lose our son in the park. He gave our baby to the woman who hated me most in this world, turning my flesh and blood into her personal punching bag. And tonight, he had pushed me down the stairs to take my dancing away, too.

I stared up at the pale acoustic tiles of the hospital ceiling.

I didn't cry. I didn't scream. The grief burned away, leaving behind something hard and cold as iron.

I wasn't going to yell at him. I wasn't going to confront him.

I was going to ruin his life.

At eight in the morning, the door swung open.

Grant walked in carrying a massive bouquet of pink peonies. His eyes were red-rimmed. His dark hair was artfully messy.

"Evie," he choked out, rushing to the side of the bed. He set the vase down and gently adjusted my pillows. "Sweetheart. God, I couldn't sleep. The doctor said the surgery went well, but... I did this. My episode... I was out of my mind. Can you ever forgive me?"

He buried his face against my hand, trembling.

I looked down at the top of his head. I felt nothing.

"Grant," I whispered. I softened my voice, letting my eyelids droop as if the painkillers were clouding my mind.

He looked up, searching my face.

I gave him a weak, tender smile. "Don't blame yourself, honey. It's the illness. You couldn't help it." I squeezed his fingers gently. "I'm just so glad you're back with me."

A tiny breath of relief slipped past his lips. His shoulders dropped. The performance slipped back into smooth, easy control.

"I'm here, baby," he said, kissing my knuckles. "I'll never leave you."

"I know," I murmured, watching the fake tenderness in his eyes.

I memorized every line of his face. Every rehearsed twitch. Every rotten lie.

I let him hold my hand, counting the seconds until I could tear his world to pieces.
