Chapter 3

Two days after I signed the divorce papers, I went back to the hospital.

Routine, Dr. Marsh had called it when she scheduled the follow-up. Routine monitoring of the scar tissue. I'd been doing these check-ins every few months for years—ever since the knife, ever since the surgery that came after, ever since the word *damage* entered my medical vocabulary and never left. I knew the drill. Gown, table, cold gel, the wand moving in slow circles. I usually stared at the ceiling tiles and thought about nothing.

This time, Dr. Marsh went quiet.

Not the comfortable quiet of a routine scan. The other kind. The kind where a person stops moving and you can feel them recalibrating.

I turned my head. She was looking at the screen with an expression I couldn't immediately name. Her brow was slightly furrowed, her lips pressed together, but her eyes—her eyes had something in them that wasn't concern. Not exactly.

'Dr. Marsh.'

She looked at me. Then back at the screen. Then at me again.

'Vivian.' She set down the wand. 'I need you to take a breath.'

My hand was already moving to my abdomen before she finished the sentence. Pressing flat against the thin paper gown, against the skin beneath, against the scar I had carried for seven years without regret.

'You're pregnant,' she said. 'Approximately six weeks.'

The room didn't move. The ceiling tiles were the same. The fluorescent light hummed its same low note.

'Given your uterine history,' she continued, and her voice had gone careful and gentle the way doctors' voices go when they are holding something fragile, 'this is—Vivian, this is extraordinary. The scar tissue, the prior assessment—' She paused. 'I want to be honest with you. Medically, this should not have been possible.'

She kept talking. I heard the shape of the words without the words themselves. *Monitoring. Cautious optimism. Remarkable.* Her mouth moved and the fluorescent light hummed and my hand was flat against my stomach and I was feeling something I had not felt in so long that I almost didn't recognize it.

Hope.

Not the desperate, white-knuckled kind. Not the kind you bargain for or borrow against. The quiet kind. The kind that rises without asking permission, that fills the chest before the mind can argue it back down.

I sat in that examination room alone after Dr. Marsh stepped out to print the paperwork, and I pressed both hands against my abdomen, and I let myself feel it. Just for a moment. Just that one terrible, luminous moment.

I thought: *you fought so hard to exist.*

I thought: *so did I.*

The curtain partition between my room and the corridor was thin. Institutional fabric, the kind that moves if someone walks past too quickly. I heard the corridor sounds—footsteps, a cart wheel, the distant intercom—and then I heard a voice that stopped my hands cold.

Ares.

His voice was low. Careful. The particular register he used when he was certain he wasn't being overheard.

'No, she doesn't suspect anything.'

A pause. Someone on the other end of the phone.

'I dissolve it into the smoothie every morning. The pills are tasteless.' Another pause. 'Two years now, no issues.'

The fluorescent light kept humming.

'She thinks it's her scar tissue.' A short, quiet sound—almost a laugh. 'Relax, baby. She's never getting pregnant.'

My hand fell from my abdomen.

It dropped to the examination table and lay there like something that no longer belonged to me.

Two years.

Every morning. The smoothie I made myself, the one I drank standing at the kitchen counter while he read his phone, the one I thought was the one small thing I did for my own health. Every morning for two years he had stood somewhere nearby and dissolved something into it and watched me drink it and said nothing.

I had blamed my body. I had sat across from doctors and listened to words like *scar tissue* and *unlikely* and *we can explore options* and I had nodded and thanked them and driven home and made dinner. I had grieved a future I thought my own body had taken from me.

It wasn't my body.

It was never my body.

I sat very still on the examination table. The paper crinkled once when I shifted my weight and then went quiet. His footsteps moved past the curtain—he was walking toward the check-in desk, his voice dropping further, murmuring something I couldn't catch anymore.

He didn't know I was here.

He didn't know what the ultrasound screen had shown, six inches away from where I was sitting, two minutes ago.

He didn't know that the thing he had spent two years preventing had happened anyway.

My hand moved back to my abdomen. Slowly. The way you move toward something you are afraid to disturb.

I pressed my palm flat and held it there and thought: *I know what you are. I know what was done to keep you from existing.*

The fluorescent light hummed.

I sat there and did not make a sound.
