Chapter 3

Three weeks is enough time to bury a marriage, if you know what you're doing.

I got good at the mask. That's the only word for it. In the morning I would wheel myself to the kitchen and make Donovan coffee the way he liked it, black with one sugar, and put it on the table without a word. He'd look up from his phone and say, "You're a good wife," and I'd say, "Thank you," and neither of us meant a thing.

I went to his mother's birthday luncheon in my best dress. I smiled at his father, who never once looked me in the eye, and I let his aunt ask about my legs and then answer her own question before I could speak. I laughed at the right moments. I touched Donovan's arm when he made a joke. Everyone saw the devoted wife. That was the performance. That was the whole point.

Savannah would call at night, when Donovan was out or in the study. We talked in a code so dry it would have bored anyone listening. She said the word "meal" when she meant money. "The pantry is stocked," meant the identity was ready. "The date is set" meant the divorce would be filed the morning after the fire.

"Tell me everything again," I said one night, sitting on the edge of my bed, my phone in my lap.

"You sign nothing new. You say nothing. You make no sudden changes. When it's time, you walk into that room and you leave with him. Everyone else sees a woman with a fire behind her. The body is already waiting in Geneva. The records will not match you. They will match her."

"Her." The word tasted odd. The woman whose body would stand in my place. A person I had never met, who had come to the end of her life unnamed, and now would be the only thing of me that anyone buried.

"Don't do that," Savannah said. She knew me too well. "Don't feel guilty about her. She's the single most useful thing to ever happen to you." She paused. "I've been reading. She'll cost us. The dental records are the hard part. Cy's taking care of it."

"He's already moving," I said.

"He's always been moving. He's been moving since the day you told him you needed help."

I didn't answer that. I didn't know what to say about Cyrus. He was a fact in my life now, like the rain. He was always there, always waiting, and I had spent three years not looking at him. Now I looked.

Cyrus sent me a message the next morning. Just a photograph. A row of surgical instruments laid out on a steel tray, clean and cold under a bright light. Under it, one line: "She arrived today. She's at peace. We start the records tomorrow."

I stared at it a long time.

"Thank you," I wrote. I wrote it and then I deleted it, because the words were too small. I wrote it again and left it there. He didn't reply. He never needed me to say it.

The physiotherapist came three times a week. Her name was Elise. She had steady hands and a quiet voice, and she had no idea what I was building toward. She was just doing her job. She would position my legs in the machine and measure the small electrical pulses that traveled up my nerves, and she would write numbers in a clipboard and say, "Great progress, Adeline. You should be proud."

I was proud. I was proud of something she didn't know about.

One afternoon she stepped out to take a call. The room went quiet. The parallel bars were at the center of the room, gleaming under the lights. I had spent three years looking at those bars and imagining what it would feel like to need them.

I pushed myself out of the wheelchair. My hands gripped the bars. My knees shook. The feeling in my legs was not strength. It was more like a memory of strength, a ghost of it, a thing my body was trying to remember how to do.

I stood.

I stood upright for eleven seconds. My fingers were white on the metal. My thighs screamed at me. My whole body was a wire pulled too tight, and I could feel the air move across my face at a height I had forgotten. I could feel the room differently. I could see the wall clock from a new angle.

Eleven seconds.

I sat back down in the chair. My heart was louder than it had been in years. I took my phone and I typed a message to Cyrus.

"Eleven seconds. I thought you should know."

He replied before I could put the phone down.

"I'll make it a lifetime."

I read those five words over and over until the screen went dark. Outside, the rain had stopped and the evening light was coming through the window, gold and pale. I looked at my reflection in the dark glass and I saw the woman I used to be, standing. Just for a second. Just long enough to remember her.

And then the door opened and Elise came back in, and I was Adeline Pierce again, the wife in the wheelchair, the woman everyone pitied.

I smiled at her.

"Great progress," she said, looking at the machines. "You should be proud."

"I am," I said.

It was the truest thing I had said all day.
