Chapter 1

The candlelight flickered across the dining room table, casting long shadows that danced like ghosts of the future I once believed I would have. I had spent the afternoon preparing this anniversary dinner with the same meticulous care I once brought to choreographing a new piece—selecting each detail to speak what words could not. The wine was breathing, the salmon perfectly seared, the roses arranged in the crystal vase Donovan had given me on our first anniversary. My fingers traced the edge of my wheelchair's armrest as I wheeled myself toward his study, my heart light with anticipation despite the phantom ache in legs that had barely begun to remember sensation after years of rehabilitation.

The door was half-open, a sliver of warm light spilling into the hallway. I was about to announce myself when his voice stopped me cold.

"Yes, I arranged it. The rigging collapse wasn't an accident, Zamir. I made sure of it."

I froze, my thumb instinctively pressing against the inside of my wrist—a small, private gesture I had developed to contain emotions I could not afford to show. Donovan's voice continued, casual and detached in a way I had never heard him speak about me before.

"Milan needed that championship. She was right—Adeline was going to win. The technician did exactly what I paid him to do. The injury was... collateral damage that worked out conveniently. The public loved the narrative—the brave billionaire who married his crippled girlfriend. It was good for business, good for appearances."

The world went silent. Not the absence of sound, but the absence of meaning. Three years of marriage, of devotion, of believing I was loved despite my broken body—all of it suddenly reframed as a calculated performance. My legs, shattered not by accident but by design. My career, destroyed to benefit Milan Vasquez. My marriage, a publicity stunt.

I sat motionless in my wheelchair, barely breathing, as Donovan continued his conversation. The man I had loved was discussing the deliberate destruction of my body with the same emotional detachment he might use to discuss a business merger. The candlelight that had seemed so romantic moments before now felt like a cruel spotlight on my own blindness.

"Adeline suspects nothing. Why would she? She thinks I saved her. Sometimes I almost believe it myself. The guilt was useful—it made me the perfect husband in everyone's eyes. And Milan got what she needed. Everyone won, really."

Everyone won. My destroyed career. My wheelchair. My father's crystal trophy gathering dust on the mantelpiece. My heart, which had somehow continued beating even as it was being systematically broken.

I wheeled myself back to the dining room with mechanical precision, my hands steady despite the earthquake happening inside my chest. I blew out every candle one by one, watching the smoke curl upward and disappear. Then I sat alone in the darkness, surrounded by the remnants of a celebration that now felt like an elaborate mockery.

Two hours later, Donovan emerged from his study, his phone still in his hand. He glanced at the cold dinner setting, his expression flickering between surprise and mild annoyance.

"Adeline? What's all this?" His voice carried the practiced warmth I now recognized as performance.

I produced a smile that cost me everything I had left. "I'm sorry. I'm not feeling well. The dinner... it doesn't matter."

He crossed the room and kissed my forehead absently, the gesture of a man going through the motions. His phone buzzed, and his eyes darted to the screen. Milan's name appeared, visible even from where I sat.

"I have to go out for a bit. Milan's having some kind of crisis with her choreographer. I'll be back later. Get some rest."

I nodded, watching him grab his coat and straighten his cufflinks—his tell when suppressing guilt. The door closed behind him with a soft click, and I was alone again.

In the silence of our penthouse, I opened the drawer of my bedside table and found what I had hidden there months ago. The pre-signed divorce papers. I had drafted them on instinct, a voice in my head whispering warnings I couldn't yet name. Now they made perfect sense. I stared at my signature until midnight, then reached for my phone.

"Savannah," I said when she answered, my voice steady as ice. "It's time. I know what happened. I know everything."

And for the first time in three years, I felt something other than grief or determination. I felt free.
