Chapter 4

On Thursday afternoon, Griffin walked into my office without knocking. He had that manic, deal-hungry glow in his eyes.

“We got Paxton Harris,” he said, leaning over my desk. “Eight o’clock tonight. Private room at the steakhouse on 54th.”

I looked up from my ledger. Paxton Harris was a venture capitalist who controlled a forty-million-dollar fund. He was also a notorious creep. Everyone in the startup scene knew about his wandering hands at industry dinners. Founders laughed it off because his checks cleared.

“Good for you,” I said evenly. “Have a good pitch.”

“Not just me,” Griffin said. “You’re coming too. You’re the founding CFO. He needs to see the whole team. It builds trust.”

I leaned back. “You know his reputation, Griffin.”

“It’s just talk, Etta. Business is business. Put on that black dress with the lace collar and do your hair. Don’t embarrass me.”

Two hours later, we sat in the back of a yellow cab crawling through Midtown traffic. The rain smeared the city lights across the glass.

Griffin kept adjusting his cuffs. He tapped his foot against the floorboard.

“Listen to me,” he said, turning to face me. “Paxton is old-school. He likes energy. He likes women who know how to play the game. Just be warm, okay? Be flexible.”

I kept my hands folded in my lap. “Flexible.”

“Yeah. And if he orders wine, drink it. Don’t make a big deal out of it.”

I turned my head and looked him dead in the eye. “I have a severe alcohol allergy, Griffin. Two sips and my chest breaks out in hives. You know that.”

“A tiny toast won't kill you,” he hissed, lowering his voice. “Don’t act like a stick in the mud. If Paxton raises a glass, you raise yours. We need this round of funding, Etta. Don’t blow it for us with your drama.”

I turned back to the window. I watched the wet pavement blur into black ribbons. I said nothing.

The private dining room at the steakhouse smelled of dry-aged beef, cigar smoke, and money.

Paxton Harris was already seated at the head of the dark mahogany table. He was a thick-necked man in his fifties with slicked-back silver hair and a Rolex that caught the chandelier light.

“Griffin! My boy,” Paxton boomed, standing up to pump Griffin’s hand.

Then his eyes slid over to me. They lingered on my waist, then moved up slowly.

“And this must be the brains of the operation,” Paxton purred, taking my hand. He held on three seconds too long, his thumb grazing my knuckle. “Much prettier than the average bean counter.”

“Etta is one of a kind,” Griffin chuckled. The laugh was too eager. Too loud.

We sat down. The sommelier poured a heavy Napa Cabernet Sauvignon into three oversized crystal glasses. The dark liquid caught the candlelight.

Paxton raised his glass. “To new partnerships.”

Griffin clinked his glass instantly. “To the future.”

I lifted my water glass.

Paxton’s smile tightened at the edges. “Water, Etta? We’re celebrating. A woman who won't drink with me is a woman who doesn't trust me.”

Griffin shot me a sharp, panicked glare. “Come on, babe. Just a sip. She’s the cautious one, Paxton. Always counting pennies, always playing defense. That’s why I keep her around!”

Griffin laughed. Paxton joined in.

I set the water down and touched the stem of the wine glass, but I didn't drink.

By the time the ribeyes arrived, Paxton had polished off half a bottle. His cheeks were flushed pink. His jokes were getting louder, cruder, and directed entirely at me.

He leaned close to my chair. His breath smelled of charred steak and sour wine.

“You know, Griffin,” Paxton said, his eyes fixed on my lips. “The software is fine. But execution is everything. I only invest in assets I can really feel good about.”

Beneath the white tablecloth, a heavy palm landed on my bare knee.

My breath caught in my throat.

Paxton’s thick fingers squeezed the flesh through my stockings. He began to slide his hand up my thigh, slow and deliberate.

I looked down at the moving fabric. Then I looked straight across the table at my husband.

Griffin was staring right at Paxton’s arm. He saw the angle of the shoulder. He saw Paxton’s hand disappeared under my skirt. He saw the cold shock on my face.

For half a second, Griffin’s jaw tightened.

Then his eyes flicked to Paxton’s Rolex. He forced a wide, sickening smile onto his face.

He let out a thin, desperate laugh.

“Paxton is right, Etta,” Griffin said, his voice trembling with false cheer. “He’s a hands-on investor. That’s what we love about him.”

He sold me out. Right there, over two hundred dollars worth of steak, he ped my dignity for a signature on a term sheet.

Something inside my chest clicked shut. It was like a heavy vault door locking into place. The last trace of guilt, the last shred of memory from seven years ago—it all vanished.

There was only cold, quiet clarity.

I didn't yell. I didn't gasp.

Slowly, deliberately, I reached out and took the crystal glass of Cabernet Sauvignon by the stem.

Paxton grinned, thinking he had won. He squeezed my thigh harder.

I lifted the glass. I turned toward Paxton.

And then I poured the dark red wine straight over the top of his head.

The wine splashed against his slicked hair. It ran down his forehead, dripped off the tip of his nose, and soaked his pristine white collar. It splattered across his lap and pooled in dark crimson puddles on the crisp white tablecloth.

Paxton froze. His mouth hung open. Wine dripped from his chin into his lap.

The room went dead silent.

Griffin leaped out of his chair so fast it screeched against the hardwood. His face was the color of chalk.

“Etta!” Griffin shrieked, his voice cracking like a terrified child's. “What are you doing? Have you lost your fucking mind?!”

I set the empty crystal glass down on the table. It made a sharp, clean *clink*.

I picked up my linen napkin. I dabbed the corners of my mouth, folded it into a neat white square, and set it beside my untouched plate.

I stood up. I smoothed the front of my dress.

Paxton finally sputtered, jumping to his feet. He knocked over his chair. “You crazy bitch! Griffin, you’re dead in this town! You hear me? You’re finished!”

Griffin scrambled around the table, grabbing cloth napkins, babbling apologies. “Paxton, please! I’m sorry, she’s sick, she had a fever—let me clean that—please—”

I didn't look at either of them.

I picked up my purse, turned on my heel, and walked out the door into the cool New York night.
