Chapter 1

The digital thermometer on my nightstand read 102.4°F.

My teeth rattled in my skull. Outside, a bitter January wind rattled the thin glass of our Manhattan apartment. The radiator clanked twice and died, leaving the bedroom freezing.

I pulled my knees to my chest. Seven years. For seven years, I had helped Griffin Alexander build his startup from a desk in our living room to a company with twenty employees. I was the founding CFO. I held a CPA license. Yet here I was, shivering in an apartment with no heat, wearing three layers of worn-out college hoodies.

I could not take it anymore.

I dragged myself out of bed, went to the corner, and plugged in the small ceramic space heater. The orange coils glowed. A faint ribbon of warm air brushed against my shins.

Thirty seconds later, my phone vibrated on the mattress.

Griffin’s name flashed on the screen. He was supposed to be in Chicago at an industrial tech conference.

I answered, my throat raw. “Griffin?”

“Are you out of your mind?” His voice ripped through the speaker, sharp and harsh. “I just got a notification from the smart power app. Why did the wattage spike in the bedroom?”

I blinked, dizzy from the fever. “I’m sick, Griffin. It’s twenty degrees outside and the radiator stopped. I turned on the heater.”

“Turn it off,” he snapped. “Do you know what electricity costs during peak winter hours? We have a burn rate to maintain. You’re burning cash for comfort.”

“I have a 102-degree fever,” I whispered.

“Then take an aspirin and put on another blanket! We aren't made of money, Etta. Every dollar we waste is runway we don't have. Unplug it. Now.”

The line went dead.

I stood in the dark. The faint orange light painted my bare toes. A bitter taste coated my tongue. Slowly, I reached down, pulled the plug from the wall, and crawled back under the blankets.

I lay there shivering, the sheets icy against my skin.

To distract myself from the throbbing behind my eyes, I opened Instagram on my phone. The blue light hurt, but I scrolled anyway.

Then my thumb froze.

A post from a mutual acquaintance—a junior analyst in our venture network—popped up on my feed. The location tag read: *Walt Disney World, VIP Fireworks Viewing.*

In the center of the photo stood Griffin.

He was not in Chicago. He was in Orlando, standing in the private VIP section in front of Cinderella Castle. And he was not alone.

Standing pressed against his side was Sylvie Baker, our twenty-four-year-old receptionist.

Sylvie was glowing. She wore a tailored cream-colored cashmere coat, holding a glass of vintage champagne. Griffin’s arm was wrapped firmly around her waist. His fingers rested against her hip with the easy familiarity of a lover. He was smiling down at her—a relaxed, generous smile I had not seen in four years.

I stared at the screen.

A VIP Disney tour cost at least six thousand dollars. Sylvie’s coat cost more than my entire clothing allowance for the past year. Griffin had screamed at me for ten cents of electricity while sipping Dom Pérignon in Florida with the girl who answered our office phones.

My chest did not heave. No tears came.

The heat of the fever seemed to burn away, replaced by an absolute, terrifying cold. Something inside me did not shatter. It crystallized.

I threw the blankets off. The cold room didn't make me shiver anymore.

I carried my laptop to the kitchen table and flipped it open. The screen glowed in the dark. I logged into the company’s internal accounting software using my CFO credentials.

I knew where the bodies were buried because I had built the graveyard.

Within twenty minutes, I found the charges.

On Griffin’s corporate Amex: $3,400 at the Grand Floridian Resort, filed under "Regional Logistics Client Dinner."

Under Sylvie’s expense account: $4,800 for "Client Entertainment," which covered two private park VIP badges.

Then I checked Griffin’s linked business Venmo. There it was, timestamped two nights ago: a direct transfer to Sylvie Baker for $1,200. The memo line was a single champagne emoji.

Seven years of hand-washing laundry in cold water to save laundry fees. Seven years of eating canned soup so we could pay our junior software engineers on time.

It was all a lie.

I didn't blink. I worked through the dead of night.

I took high-resolution screenshots of every fraudulent expense. I found jewelry invoices from a boutique in Soho, billed as "Promotional Client Gifts." I pulled up six months of Sylvie’s inflated DoorDash orders paid with company credit.

I compiled everything into an encrypted folder and uploaded it to an offshore cloud drive. Then I saved a second copy onto a thumb drive for my safe deposit box.

Next came the real work.

Our business treasury account held $450,000 in liquid capital—accumulated from my seven years of sweat, tax maneuvers, and sacrifice. Legally, as founding CFO, I held sole independent signing authority over the treasury reserve.

I opened the wire transfer portal.

My fingers moved without hesitation across the keys. I entered the account details of a private family trust I had quietly established two months ago in Queens, legally registered under my parents' names: Robert and Helen Morrison.

Protected. Untouchable.

I hit *Confirm*.

A green checkmark flashed across the monitor. The balance cleared.

Pale morning light crept across the Manhattan skyline, cutting through the frosty window. The clock on the microwave read 6:15 AM.

I stood up, walked to the stove, and boiled a small pot of water. I brewed a single mug of black tea, holding the warm ceramic between my palms.

I closed the laptop, walked back into the bedroom, and slid under the covers.

The space heater was still unplugged in the corner. But for the first time in seven years, I was not cold at all.
