Chapter 2

I was working on a new piece when he came home. Blues and grays, a winter harbor scene, nothing personal. I'd chosen it deliberately — something I could set down without feeling anything.

I heard his footsteps in the hall. Heard them slow outside my studio door. Then the door opened.

'You're painting.' He said it like he'd expected to find me in pieces.

'I am.' I didn't turn around.

He came in and stood behind me for a moment. I could feel him trying to read the room, recalibrating. My calm was throwing him off. Good.

'The Met exhibition is in three weeks.' He moved to the window, hands in his pockets. Casual. Practiced. 'Dalia needs a centerpiece. Something with weight, something the collectors will recognize.' He paused. 'The Girl Who Paints would be the perfect fit.'

I set my brush down on the tray. Slowly. I turned to look at him.

'No.'

Just the one word. No explanation, no apology wrapped around it.

His jaw tightened. The small muscle just below his ear, the one that jumped when he was closing in on someone. I'd spent six years learning his face. I knew every tell.

'Serenity.' His voice was patient the way a wall is patient. 'This is a significant opportunity for her. For the foundation's visibility. It reflects well on both of us.'

'I said no, Nolan.'

'You're being selfish.' He said it quietly, like a diagnosis. 'You're letting what happened affect your judgment.'

I picked my brush back up. Dipped it. Touched it to the canvas.

'Good night,' I said.

He stood there another moment. Then his footsteps crossed the floor and the door clicked shut behind him.

I stared at the harbor scene and felt nothing. That was new. Three weeks ago, his disappointment would have hollowed me out. Now it landed like weather — present, noted, irrelevant.

I kept painting until midnight.

---

He didn't argue again. That was how I knew it was serious.

Nolan Bishop did not argue when he'd already decided to win. He simply rearranged the terrain until you had nowhere left to stand.

The joint account froze on a Tuesday. No call, no note. I went to transfer funds for the gallery's supply order and the screen told me the account was under review pending financial restructuring. I stood at my desk and looked at those words for a long time.

On Wednesday, his assistant called the collectors' dinner host. I found out from the host herself, a woman named Patricia who'd known me for four years and had the decency to be embarrassed. 'Nolan mentioned you wouldn't be able to make it,' she said carefully. 'I hope everything is all right.'

'Everything's fine,' I told her. 'Thank you for calling.'

I hung up and sat very still.

The dinner was where I'd planned to secure the final pledges for the orphanage endowment. Eleanor's home had been running on a gap-funded budget for eight months. I'd promised her by the end of the quarter.

Nolan knew that. He knew exactly what he was cutting.

I opened my sketchbook and wrote two things down. Then I closed it and went back to work.

---

Kensley found it on Thursday morning. She came into the back office, closed the door without being asked, and set her notebook on the table between us.

'The gallery account bounced on the Harmon supply order,' she said. 'I traced it back to the joint freeze. Serenity.' She stopped. 'What's going on?'

I looked at her — this woman who had been in my corner for five years, who'd stayed late to reframe pieces when I was too exhausted to lift my arms, who'd learned the name of every child at Eleanor's home because I talked about them so much. She deserved the truth.

So I told her. All of it. The office, the photo on the floor. The stairs. The four minutes and thirty-seven seconds I'd lain alone on cold marble. The hospital room, the soup, the way Nolan's arm had curved around Dalia's shoulders while he told me I was vicious. The prenup sitting in my drawer with my signature already on it. His laugh when he set it down.

I told it flat, the way you read a police report. My voice didn't shake. I'd already used up the shaking.

Kensley didn't say anything for a long time. Her knuckles were white around her notebook.

'The orphanage endowment,' she finally said. 'We need to protect it first.'

'Already on my list.'

She looked up. Her eyes were steady and a little wet and completely certain. 'When do we start?'

I looked at her across the small table, the closed door behind her, the city noise muffled outside the window.

'We already have,' I said.

She opened her notebook to a fresh page and clicked her pen.

Outside, the afternoon light was going gray. I thought about Eleanor's kids, their drawings taped to the walls of a home that needed to still be standing next year. I thought about the harbor painting drying in my studio — blues and grays, nothing personal, something I could set down without feeling anything.

I was getting very good at that.
