Chapter 3

I was awake before the city was.

I don't know what time I got up. I just know the sky outside was the color of a bruise — that specific dark blue before anything decides to be light — and I was sitting in my study in the chair I'd had since law school, the one Asher had offered to replace three times and I'd refused three times, and I wasn't moving.

I sat there for three hours.

I know it was three hours because the clock on the wall ticked through them and I counted, the way you count things when your mind has gone somewhere past thought and needs something simple to hold onto. Tick. Tick. Tick. Outside, the city started assembling itself — a garbage truck, a siren two blocks east, the first thin gray of dawn pressing against the glass.

Ila's study was down the hall. The fire had gone cold in the night. I didn't go look.

At some point I stood up.

I went to my desk. The bottom left drawer had a lock — a real one, not the decorative kind — and I kept the key on a chain I wore under my clothes. I took out the laptop. It was encrypted, purchased under a name I'd created for a pro bono case three years ago and never dissolved. I'd kept it the way you keep a fire extinguisher: hoping you'll never need it, knowing you might.

I opened a new message. I typed nine words.

I need the full package. When can we meet?

I read it once. Then I sent it, closed the laptop, locked the drawer, and went to make coffee.

I stood at the kitchen counter while it brewed and watched the street below. A woman walked a dog. A man in a suit checked his phone without breaking stride. The city didn't know. The city didn't care. I found that steadying, in a way I couldn't have explained to anyone.

I drank my coffee. I got dressed. I went to work.

The weeks after that had a particular texture — the texture of a performance so complete it almost convinced me.

Amber was busy. I could feel it the way you feel weather changing, a pressure shift before the storm announces itself. Stories started appearing in places that mattered to the people who mattered to Asher. A blind item here, a whispered concern there. *Sources close to the Bryant family express worry about Evelynn Lane's erratic behavior following her mother's death.* I read each one with the same attention I'd once given to opposing counsel's briefs, cataloguing the strategy, noting the escalation pattern.

Mutual acquaintances called Asher. I knew because I could hear the change in his voice when he came to dinner — a new quality of assessment in the way he looked at me, like he was checking a structure for cracks.

One evening he told me, without looking up from his phone, that Lawson would be coordinating my schedule for the next few weeks. *Just to ease your load*, he said. *While you're still adjusting.*

I said that was fine.

I discovered the monitoring on a Tuesday. A car service logged to my account for a route I hadn't taken. A meeting with my former paralegal — just coffee, just two people who used to work together — rescheduled without my input to a time I'd never agreed to.

Lawson's work was clean. Precise. He was good at this. I'd always known he was good at this.

I didn't say a word to Asher.

Instead, I let Lawson watch the surface. I made it easy for him — kept my routine consistent, my expressions neutral, my movements logged and predictable. Coffee at eight. The gym at six. Dinner at home. A woman adjusting, slowly, to the shape of her grief.

Underneath that, I worked.

I started with geography. The Pacific Coast Highway runs along some of the most dramatic coastline in the country — I'd driven stretches of it twice, once for a case, once because Asher had wanted a weekend in Carmel and I'd sat in the passenger seat watching the ocean and thinking about nothing. I pulled topographic maps on my encrypted laptop. I studied the pull-offs, the sight lines, the drop distances from the guardrails to the water below. I read incident reports from the county sheriff's database — accidents, recoveries, the specific language used when a body was not found.

I read it the way I used to read case law. Looking for precedent. Looking for the gap in the record where a person could disappear.

The reply to my nine words came on a Thursday, two lines, a time and a location.

I deleted the message. I memorized the details. I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist — not from grief this time, not from the need to feel something other than hollow.

From habit. From steadiness. From the specific calm of a woman who has finally, irrevocably, decided.

The coffee was good that morning.

I finished every drop.
