Chapter 3

I filed on a Tuesday.

Diane Whitfield walked me through the paperwork the night before, her reading glasses pushed up on her head, her voice the same temperature it would be discussing a lease renewal. I signed everything with my left hand braced against the table because my incision still pulled when I leaned forward. She didn't comment on that.

I thought I'd feel something when I handed the documents back. Relief, maybe. Or grief. Some clean, identifiable thing.

I felt nothing. Just the scratch of the pen and the quiet click of Diane's briefcase closing.

Kash's attorney called by noon.

I didn't take the call. Diane did. She came back into the sitting room with her phone in her hand and her expression the way it gets when she's about to say something she finds professionally distasteful.

'He's refusing,' she said. 'They're citing postpartum psychological instability. They're saying you're making accusations rooted in hormonal disruption and emotional dysregulation following a traumatic birth.' She paused. 'They're also saying that any asset review would require full disclosure of the Diaz family holdings going back seven years. They used the word reckless. Twice.'

I sat with that for a moment.

Postpartum psychological instability.

I thought about Noah's clipboard. The single container on my tray. My mother's blood on the doorframe, that thin, almost neat line of it. My daughter's chest rising and falling under wires that weren't supposed to be there.

I thought about Kash's face when he said maybe having a baby right now was the wrong call. The way he straightened his jacket. The way he walked.

'They're going to drag your family into discovery,' Diane said. 'That's the threat. Make it expensive enough and public enough that you back down.'

'I know what it is,' I said.

She looked at me.

'It's fine,' I said. 'Let them send it in writing.'

She studied me for another second. Then she wrote something down.

That night I called my father.

'He just handed me the reason,' I said.

Rory was quiet for a moment. Not surprised. Just listening.

'Explain,' he said.

'He needs me to back down. That's the whole play — make it ugly enough that I fold. But if I'm backing down, I'm not filing. And if I'm not filing, he thinks he's won.' I looked at the window. The city was doing what it always did, indifferent and lit up and enormous. 'He needs me scared. So I'm going to give him exactly that.'

Another pause. Then: 'You're going back in.'

'I'm going back home,' I said. 'And I'm going to be exactly what he needs me to be.'

---

I gave it four days.

Four days of silence, of not returning Diane's calls in front of him, of sitting with my daughter in the NICU and letting Kash see me look tired and small and defeated. It wasn't hard. I was tired. I was small. I just redirected it.

On the fifth day I went home.

Kash was in the kitchen when I came in. He looked up with that recalibrating expression — the one where he decides which version of himself to deploy. He chose cautious. Slightly magnanimous.

'Gracie.'

'I owe you an apology,' I said.

I watched something relax in his shoulders. Just a fraction. Just enough.

I set my bag down and I looked at him and I let my voice go soft. 'I wasn't okay. After the surgery, after everything — I wasn't thinking clearly. Diane said things I shouldn't have let her say. The filing was —' I stopped. Shook my head. 'I was scared and I took it out on you and that wasn't fair.'

He crossed the kitchen. He put his hands on my shoulders and looked at me with that expression — the warm, patient one, the one I used to believe completely.

'It's okay,' he said. 'It's been a hard few weeks.'

'I want to do better,' I said. 'I want to actually support you. The venture, the launch — I've been reading about what you're building.' I let a beat pass. 'I want to bring real capital to the table. My family's capital. I think it could be something.'

I watched it move across his face. The recalibration. The calculation. And underneath both of those, the thing I'd been counting on.

The certainty that he was the smartest person in the room.

'Let's set up a meeting,' he said.

His hands were still on my shoulders. I kept my face open and warm and I looked at my husband and I thought about a fraud clause I had memorized in my second year of law school, the sharpest instrument in any contract, and I thought about Diane's briefcase clicking shut, and I thought about my daughter's fists curled tight against whatever she was fighting.

'Yes,' I said. 'Let's.'
