Chapter 1

“Amelia, you’re really planning to walk away from the transplant?” The physician leaned forward, disbelief written all over his face as he slid the documents closer to me. “Mr. Holt spent five years pulling strings and burned fifty million dollars to secure this slot. Skip it, and you’ll be lucky to last another month. After that… there will be no miracles left.”

I dipped my head slightly, then murmured, “I’m not going through with it.”

Confusion flickered across his features — he seemed torn between wanting to lecture me and wanting to mourn me. He pushed the clipboard back into my hands. I signed with deliberate care, forcing my fingers to stay steady.

“Please keep this quiet,” I added. “I’ll explain things to Stephen myself.”

The moment I stepped out of his office, the strength drained from my legs. Still, I dragged myself up the stairs to the fourth floor. That wing had always belonged to Stephen — guarded hallways, restricted access, specialists in crisp coats coming and going day and night. He spared no expense. Yet even with all that power, they couldn’t stop time for my grandfather. The doctors had warned me this morning that he might not make it through the day.

I sat beside his bed and wrapped my hand around his paper-thin fingers.

“Grandpa… if I do this, will you be angry with me?”

I tried to apologize, but the words wouldn’t come. If I hadn’t existed, the Malonzo family might never have been destroyed.

Five years earlier, my parents had been falsely accused of massive financial crimes. Everything they built — hundreds of billions — vanished overnight. The only person who could testify on their behalf was Seraphina Vale, the intern my mother had foolishly mentored like family. She disappeared the morning the trial was supposed to start.

Stephen swore he would find her. We chased every trace, every rumor, every dead end. She evaporated completely. Without her, my parents were convicted. Not long after, crushed beyond endurance, they took blades to their wrists and ended their own lives.

I can still remember the phone call. Grandpa collapsed the moment he heard. He never truly woke again. And I was left with nothing… except Stephen.

That night he held me until my ribs ached.

“Addy, I’m here,” he whispered. “I’ll hunt Seraphina down, make her pay, and restore your parents’ names.”

I clung to him like a lifeline. He was all I had.

Until yesterday.

He was out of town, so I reviewed a few of his property files. That’s when I noticed it — one secluded villa, never discussed, never visited, was registered under Seraphina Vale’s name. The transfer date matched the exact day she vanished five years ago.

My hands went numb. For half a decade, I had chased ghosts, wondering how she stayed hidden. Now I finally understood.

The man who slept beside me every night.

The man who promised vengeance.

Stephen wasn’t looking for her — he was protecting her.

Hot tears soaked Grandpa’s blanket as my chest split open. If I had stopped my mother from taking Seraphina in, from placing her inside our company, maybe none of this would have happened. My parents would still be alive. Grandpa wouldn’t be dying in this sterile room.

Then the monitor’s rhythm shattered.

“Grandpa!”

The sound turned into one long, merciless tone. Nurses and doctors rushed in as I slammed the call button, but I couldn’t move. They pulled me into the hallway while they worked behind the closed door. I fumbled for my phone.

Stephen was still my emergency contact. I dialed.

Declined.

I tried again. His phone went straight to powered off.

I collapsed onto the icy floor, choking on my sobs, when my screen lit up with a new message:

“Dear Mr. Holt, congratulations on reserving our premium postpartum suite! We look forward to welcoming you and Miss Seraphina as you celebrate your baby’s arrival.”

Each word carved deeper than the last.

The door opened quietly. The doctor’s eyes told me everything before he spoke.

“I’m so sorry, Amelia.”

My grip tightened around my phone until my nails drew blood. My grandfather was gone — the man who raised me, the last piece of my family. And my husband… was elsewhere, waiting to greet his child with the woman who destroyed my life.

The agony in my body was nothing compared to the ruin in my heart.

I stumbled back inside and held Grandpa’s hand one final time.

“Please… wait for me. You, Mom, Dad — don’t go too far ahead. I’ll come soon. Then we won’t be apart anymore.”

I wept until my throat burned, then forced myself to arrange his funeral. When it ended, I walked out alone, clutching his urn with trembling arms.

A part of me needed proof.

So I went to the postpartum center.

I hid near the lobby wall, scarf pulled high over my face. And when I saw them together, my entire body went rigid.
