Chapter 5

Finn's office is colder than usual on Tuesday afternoon.

I sit on the couch. The extra blanket is folded beside me. I haven't needed it today.

Finn is across from me. He has a document on his desk. Not his usual notebook. Something formal. Printed.

He slides it across the desk toward me.

'This is an authorization form,' he says. His voice is measured. Professional. 'It gives me permission to disclose your clinical diagnosis in a non-clinical setting. On your terms. For your protection.'

I pick up the paper. I read it slowly.

*Authorization for Disclosure of Protected Health Information.*

*Patient: Emilia Cunningham.*

*Diagnosis: Major Depressive Disorder, Severe, with PTSD.*

*Precipitating Event: Death of minor child, Noah Cunningham-Torres, age 3, February 2022.*

The words blur. I blink. They come back into focus.

'You don't have to sign it,' Finn says quietly. 'This is entirely your choice.'

I set the paper down on my lap. I look at him.

'You're planning to bring this to the dinner,' I say.

He doesn't look away. 'Yes.'

'Why?'

He leans forward slightly. His hands are folded on his desk.

'Because your husband has constructed a narrative,' he says. 'A narrative in which you are irrational. Unstable. Unfaithful. And he's using that narrative to justify his behavior. To gaslight you. To humiliate you.'

He pauses.

'The truth is a clinical diagnosis,' he continues. 'Documented. Timestamped. Irrefutable. And if you authorize me to present it, I will.'

I trace the edge of the paper. My hands are steady.

'He'll be angry,' I say.

Finn's jaw tightens. Just slightly.

'Good,' he says.

I look at him. Really look at him. The man who has sat across from me twice a week for months. Who sets his pen down when I say something important. Who walks me to the elevator. Who scheduled me last so I never feel rushed.

The man who is doing this not because it's his job. But because he cannot sit at that table and watch Brock lie about me one more time.

'You already know what it says,' Finn says quietly.

I pick up the pen.

'I do,' I reply. 'That's why I'm signing it.'

I sign my name at the bottom. Emilia Cunningham. Clear. Legible.

I slide the paper back across the desk.

Finn takes it. He folds it carefully. He places it in a leather folder.

'Thank you,' he says.

I nod.

We sit in silence for a moment.

'Are you afraid?' he asks.

I think about it. Really think about it.

'No,' I say. 'Not anymore.'

---

That evening, I stand in my studio.

The closet door is open. The wrapped watercolors are stacked in the back. Brown paper. Twine. Untouched.

I don't unwrap them. Not tonight.

But I stand there. I look at them.

I think about Noah. The way he used to sit on the floor beside my easel. The way he called the bleeding colors magic.

I think about the woman I was before he died. The woman who painted. Who laughed. Who believed in ordinary beautiful things.

I close the closet door.

I go to my bedroom. I open my closet. I pull out the outfit I've chosen for tomorrow.

A simple black dress. Tailored. Elegant. Not expensive. Not performative. Just mine.

I lay it on the chair. I set my shoes beside it.

I lie down in bed. Brock is downstairs. I hear him typing on his phone. The sound drifts up through the floorboards.

I close my eyes.

I sleep better than I have in months.

---

Friday morning. Somewhere in Midtown, Ryan Cho sits at his desk during lunch.

He's scrolling Reddit. Killing time. He clicks on a thread in a relationship advice forum.

He starts reading.

The post is long. Detailed. Smug.

*I'm a six-figure tech professional in a mutually open marriage. My wife is frigid and emotionally unavailable. I've reconnected with my college sweetheart. My wife is probably sleeping with her therapist. We're all adults here.*

Ryan stops scrolling.

He reads it again.

The details are too specific. The Brooklyn brownstone. The 'six-figure' phrasing. The phrase 'emotional intelligence' that shows up in every Slack thread Brock Torres touches.

Ryan clicks on the username. He reads the post history.

More posts. More details. More smugness.

He screenshots everything.

He opens Slack. He sends the screenshots to Maya Chen. A senior developer. Someone he trusts.

*Is this who I think it is?*

Maya replies in three minutes.

*Holy shit. Yes.*

Ryan stares at his screen.

Then he forwards the screenshots to HR.

No message. Just the images.

He closes his laptop. He goes back to work.

By three o'clock, the screenshots are circulating internally.

By four, Brock Torres has a meeting request from HR. Marked urgent.

By five, the investigation is open.

Brock leaves the office early. He doesn't know yet. But the walls are already closing.

---

I'm at home when Brock walks in at six.

He's in a good mood. He pours himself wine. He checks his phone.

'Ready for tonight?' he asks.

I look up from my laptop.

'Yes,' I say.

He smiles. He drinks his wine. He goes upstairs to change.

I close my laptop.

I go to the bedroom. I put on the black dress. I do my hair. I look at myself in the mirror.

I look like myself again.

I go downstairs. Brock is waiting by the door. He's wearing his best suit. The watch I bought him.

We leave together.

The restaurant is twenty minutes away.

I am awake.

And I am ready.
