Chapter 1

I came back from my three-day trip to Chicago on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.

Our Manhattan apartment smelled like fresh eucalyptus and vanilla. On the marble island, there was a glass vase filled with white hydrangeas. Beside it lay a folded card in Ryder’s neat handwriting: *Welcome home, baby. I made sure your favorite tea was stocked. Missed you like crazy.*

I smiled. After six years of marriage, Ryder still did things like that. He was thoughtful. He noticed the small things.

I wheeled my suitcase into our bedroom to unpack. I reached for my jewelry box on the top shelf of the vanity.

My hand touched empty wood.

I paused and looked down. The velvet box was sitting on the bottom shelf, tucked behind my perfume bottles. I frowned. I had kept that box on the top shelf since the day we moved in.

I walked into the walk-in closet to hang my coat. My favorite gray cashmere scarf was missing from its brass hook. I checked the drawers. It wasn't there. Then I walked back out into the hall.

The framed black-and-white photo of our first walk-up apartment in Brooklyn was gone from the foyer wall. I found it hanging three doors down, right outside the guest bedroom.

I stood in the hallway for a long time. The nail hole near the front door was empty.

That evening, Ryder made homemade carbonara. The kitchen was warm, filled with the rich smell of fried pancetta and cracked black pepper. He set a bowl in front of me and kissed the crown of my head.

"You look exhausted, Noelle," he said softly, sliding into the chair across from me. "Chicago was rough, huh?"

"It was fine," I said. I picked up my fork, but my stomach felt tight. "Ryder... did you move some things around while I was gone?"

He paused, a glass of pinot noir halfway to his lips. "What kind of things?"

"My jewelry box was on the bottom shelf. My gray scarf is gone. And the Brooklyn photo is outside the guest room."

Ryder let out a low, gentle laugh. He reached across the small table and took my hand. His thumb rubbed over my knuckles. "Sweetheart, I didn’t touch any of that."

"The picture was moved," I insisted, my voice tight. "The hook is empty."

"Noelle." He sighed, leaning in. His brown eyes were swimming with pure concern. He reached up and gently cupped my cheek. His palm was warm. "You moved that photo three weeks ago. You said the afternoon sun was fading the print."

I stared at him. "I didn't do that."

"You did, love. You’ve been working seventy hours a week at the firm. You're barely sleeping." He dropped his hand, touching the side of his neck for a second before giving me a sad smile. "Maybe it's time to talk to someone. Just a therapist. To help with the stress."

My throat closed up.

That night, I lay awake in the dark. Beside me, Ryder slept deeply, his breathing slow and steady. I turned my left hand over and ran my thumb along my gold wedding band.

Did I move the photo? Was I really that tired?

Over the next two weeks, the little things got worse.

One morning, my running sneakers were sitting in the guest closet instead of by the door. On Friday, I opened my laptop and found browser tabs open to luxury vacation rentals in Miami—places I had never searched for. On Sunday, a ceramic mug I knew I had washed and put away was sitting in the sink, stained with dried black coffee. I only drank green tea.

Ryder didn't yell. That would have been easier to fight.

Instead, he left a glossy brochure for a mental health clinic on the kitchen counter. When I came home from work on Wednesday, he told me he had called my assistant, Elena.

"I was just worried, babe," he whispered, wrapping his arms around me from behind while I stood frozen. "I asked Elena if you seemed distracted at the office. She said you looked pale."

I felt like I was walking on wet ice. Every step made me doubt the ground beneath my feet.

The breaking point happened on a Thursday night.

I was washing my face in the master bathroom. As I wiped down the white marble vanity, I stopped. Coiled against the chrome drain of my sink was a long, dark, wavy strand of hair.

My hair is straight and blonde. Ryder’s hair is short and sandy brown.

My heart hammered against my ribs. I picked up the hair and walked into the living room, holding it between my shaking fingers.

"Whose is this?" I asked.

Ryder looked up from his tablet. He barely glanced at my fingers. "It’s from the cleaning service, Noelle."

"The cleaners haven't come in two weeks, Ryder," I said. My voice cracked. "I canceled them for the month because of my audit schedule."

Ryder looked at me. His face softened into that awful, familiar pity. He set the tablet down and walked over to me. He gently took the strand of hair from my hand and tossed it into the trash can.

"Sweetheart," he said softly, shaking his head. "Mrs. Gable was here on Monday. You even signed the check for her. Remember?"

I looked at the trash can. Then I looked at my husband's calm, handsome face.

A cold chill ran down my spine.

I didn't argue. I forced a small, tired nod. "Right," I whispered. "I forgot."

The next afternoon, while Ryder was at his office, I didn't go to work.

I drove my car out to an electronics store in Queens. I paid four hundred dollars in cash for four miniature surveillance cameras. They were encrypted, motion-activated, and completely black.

When I got back to the apartment, the silence felt heavy. Suffocating.

My hands shook so hard that I dropped the tiny screwdriver twice. I hid one camera inside the smoke detector in the hallway. I wedged another behind the books on the living room shelf. I put the third in the bedroom, angled toward the closet, and the fourth near the foyer.

It took me three tries to sync the feed to my phone. I buried the app deep inside a password-protected folder labeled *Tax Receipts*.

When I finished, the apartment looked exactly the same. Quiet. Elegant. Pristine.

I stood in the center of the living room, hugging my arms tightly against my chest. My heart was pounding in my ears.

I didn't know what I was looking for. And as I stared at the blank walls, I realized I was terrified of finding nothing at all.
