My Husband Called Me a Stalker to Hide His Mistress Novel Cover

My Husband Called Me a Stalker to Hide His Mistress

Five years of marriage ended in a single public humiliation: Callum called me a stalker at a charity gala, protecting the pregnant woman at his side. I noticed her ring—identical to my supposedly unique design. He'd spent my parents' inheritance on her home and nursery, changed the locks on the house I funded, and forged a loan in my name to erase me completely. But his money leaves fingerprints, and I intend to follow every one of them.

Chapter 2

The doors hadn't fully closed when I twisted out of the guard's grip.

"No."

He reached for me again. I stepped back into the ballroom, into the light, into a hundred staring faces.

"I'm not leaving until he explains." I pointed past the tables at Callum. "That photo. That ring. And why she's wearing the name *Mrs. Reed* at a charity gala."

The room went quiet. Even the quartet stopped.

Callum crossed the floor fast. He was smiling at the guests, but his hand clamped onto my elbow like a vise.

"I'll handle this," he told the guard. "Give us a minute."

He steered me through a side door into a private lounge. Leather chairs. A fireplace nobody had lit. He shut the door and turned on me.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" His voice stayed low, which was worse than yelling. "You weren't supposed to be here, Mara. Who got you in? Daniel?"

"That's your question? Who let your *wife* into the party?"

"It's complicated."

"Then make it simple."

He rubbed his forehead. "Tessa and I... it's not what you think. After tonight, I'll sit down with you and explain everything. I promise."

I studied him. The same dimple. The same gray eyes I used to wake up to. Five years of knowing that face, and I couldn't find my husband anywhere in it.

"Is she pregnant?"

He said nothing.

"Callum. Is she pregnant?"

"Yes."

"Is it yours?"

His jaw worked. Then, quietly: "Yes."

My knees went soft. I gripped the back of a chair.

"How long?"

"Mara—"

"How *long*?"

"Two years." He held up a hand, like he was calming a dog. "But I never planned to leave you. Never. Tessa's young. She needs someone to look after her. And when a man's about to be a father, he doesn't get to walk away. That's responsibility."

I stared at him. Then I laughed, a raw, cracked sound.

"Responsibility. You come home to me, you eat the dinners I cook, you sleep in my bed, you spend my parents' money—and then you go play husband to her? And you call that *responsibility*?"

Something in him shut like a door. His voice went flat and cold.

"You want honesty? Fine. You never gave me a real family. Five years, Mara. No kids. Tessa's having my baby. You and I never had that."

The words landed square in my chest.

I remembered sitting on the edge of our bathtub, holding a negative test for the ninth time. Telling him I'd booked an appointment for us both. Fertility testing.

*Work's insane right now, babe. Don't stress. It'll happen.*

He canceled. Twice. So I'd gone alone and sat in waiting rooms reading pamphlets, wondering what was wrong with me. Apologizing to him at night for something I didn't even understand.

He'd let me carry that guilt for years. Because it kept me from asking where he really went.

"You knew," I whispered. "You let me think it was me."

He checked his watch.

I turned and walked out.

I made it two steps into the hallway before I heard her voice around the corner.

"—such a lucky girl," an older woman was gushing. "A beautiful baby, a husband like Callum. You'll have the perfect family."

Tessa giggled. "I know. And Cal promised that once the baby comes, he'll finally clean up the mess from his past. All of it."

I rounded the corner.

"The mess," I said. "Is that me?"

Tessa turned. For half a second, she looked startled. Then her chin lifted.

"Honestly? Yes."

The older woman's mouth fell open.

"You knew he was married," I said.

"Of course I knew." She smoothed her gown over her belly. "I just figured he'd end it eventually. A marriage with no children isn't really a marriage, is it?"

"You little—"

"Mara."

Callum was behind me. So was half the ballroom. Guests spilled through the doorway, phones already up.

He raised his voice so it carried.

"I'm sorry, everyone. My—this woman has serious emotional problems. For years she's accused me of cheating with no reason. And now she's showing up to harass my family."

"That's a lie!"

Tessa burst into tears on cue. "She threatened my baby! Back there, she said she'd hurt my baby!"

A gasp rippled through the crowd.

"Unbelievable."

"Someone call the police."

"She's the homewrecker? Wow."

"I'm his *wife*!" I fumbled for my clutch. "I have proof. Our marriage certificate is on my phone—"

My hand closed on nothing. Lipstick. Keys. A tissue.

The phone was gone.

The lounge. It must have fallen when he grabbed me.

I shoved past the crowd and threw open the lounge door. The carpet was empty. The chair was empty.

A hotel manager stood by the fireplace, holding my phone in a plastic bag.

"That's mine."

"Ma'am, Mr. Reed turned this in." He didn't meet my eyes. "He said it contains private information that doesn't belong to you. We'll be giving it to the police."

"It's *my phone*."

"I'm sorry, ma'am. You'll need to leave."

They walked me out through the lobby while people whispered and filmed. Nobody stopped them.

The December wind cut straight through my dress. I stood on the curb with my arms wrapped around myself until a cab finally pulled over.

The whole ride, I heard his voice.

*A marriage with no children.*

I thought of the oak tree. The vows. The nights he held me when I cried about my parents. Every memory curdled. He hadn't been comforting me. He'd been managing me.

The cab dropped me in front of our townhouse.

I pressed my thumb to the keypad.

A red light blinked. *Access denied.*

I tried again. Red.

I bent closer. The brass handle was new. The whole lock was new.

I jammed my finger on the doorbell.

The little camera lit up, and Callum's voice came through the speaker. Calm. Almost kind.

"Go to a hotel, Mara. Take a few days. Cool off."

"You changed the locks. On *my* house."

"Our house. And I think you need some space to accept reality. When you're ready to talk like an adult, we'll talk about the marriage."

"Callum, open this door."

"Goodnight, Mara."

The light went dark.

I stood on the step and looked up at the windows. Behind that glass was the sofa I'd picked out fabric for. The lamps I'd hunted down at estate sales. My mother's old upright piano, the one with the chipped middle C she never fixed because she said it gave the house character.

I'd paid the down payment with her money. Every inch of this place was hers. Mine.

And he'd taken it in one evening.

No. Not one evening.

New locks didn't install themselves during a gala. Access codes didn't delete themselves. He'd had this ready. Waiting. Maybe for weeks.

This wasn't a fight. It was a plan.

And I was the thing being cleared away.

My smartwatch buzzed against my wrist.

I almost ignored it. Then I saw the bank's logo.

I read it twice. Then a third time.

I had never taken out a loan in my life.
