My Husband Buried Me for His Mistress

Chapter 5

I wasn't there for what came next. I want to say that plainly, because everything I'm about to tell you, I gathered later—from Lennon, from records, from the small cruel details people love to repeat when they think you're finally broken enough to hear them. But I've turned it over so many times in the dark that it doesn't feel like secondhand anymore. It feels like memory. So I'll tell it the way I know it happened.

The morning after the club, Armani brought Nathanael a laptop.

She set it on his desk the way she set down everything—careful, quiet, like she was handling something fragile instead of something she'd built with her own hands. The footage showed a black SUV pulling away from a side street two blocks from the club. A woman's silhouette in the back seat. A man beside her, face angled away from the camera. Luggage stacked behind them, the kind you'd pack for a long trip, not a short one. The timestamp in the corner matched the hour I'd been carried, unconscious, into a different car entirely.

"I didn't want to show you this," she said. Her voice had exactly the right amount of sorrow in it, calibrated like everything else about her. "But you needed to know. She chose to leave."

He watched it six times. I know that because Lennon told me, and Lennon knew because a housekeeper told her, months later, when there was no longer any reason to keep Foster secrets. Six times, alone in that study with the door locked, the blue light of the screen the only thing moving in the room. Then he closed the laptop. Then he opened the bottom drawer of his desk—the one I never had a key to—and took out an envelope of photographs. Me at twenty-three, laughing at something off-camera. Me on the terrace the night he proposed, before I understood what I was agreeing to. He sat with them in the dark for a very long time. Nobody came to check on him. Nobody dared.

That part, I believe. The rest, I try not to think about too hard, because it makes my chest go tight in a way I've promised myself I won't allow anymore.

Lennon called me on a Tuesday. Then a Thursday. Then the following Monday, three appointments gone, my voicemail full of a silence I never filled. She told me later she knew something was wrong by the second missed call—not because I was unreliable, but because I never had been. I always showed up. Showing up was the last thing they hadn't taken from me.

She called the penthouse. Armani answered on the second ring, warm as a held hand.

"Oh—Dr. Bishop. I'm afraid Saoirse's decided to leave the marriage. And the city, actually. It's for the best, I think, given everything. She needed a fresh start."

Lennon didn't argue. She didn't accuse. She just said thank you, and hung up, and sat at her desk for four minutes doing nothing at all—she told me later that those four minutes were the only time in the whole ordeal she let herself feel afraid, because she understood, in her bones, that Armani was lying, and that meant something worse than lying was underneath it.

Then she opened her laptop and pulled up the monitoring portal for my medical bracelet. The one I'd worn on my wrist for a year, the one that was supposed to track vitals in case I did to myself what everyone assumed I eventually would. The signal wasn't moving. It wasn't in Manhattan. It was pinging, steady and small, from a fixed point on the outskirts of Newark.

She didn't call the police. She didn't call anyone. She got in her car at eleven that night with a flashlight from her glove compartment and drove.

I don't remember the drive, obviously. I don't remember the flashlight beam swinging across broken earth, or the sound of a woman on her knees in industrial dirt, digging with her bare hands because a shovel would have taken too long to find. I don't remember any of that the way you'd remember a scene. What I remember is smaller, and stranger, and mine.

I remember cold that had stopped feeling like cold and started feeling like nothing. I remember the particular silence of being underground—not quiet, exactly, but muffled, like the world had been wrapped in wet wool. I remember, at some point, a sound above me. Scraping. Rhythmic. Someone's breath, ragged with effort, close enough that I could almost feel it through the soil.

Then fingers. Real fingers, warm against my throat, pressing, searching.

Then a voice, cracked and furious and relieved all at once, saying my name like it was the only word left in the language.

"Saoirse. Saoirse, I've got you. I've got you."

I didn't answer. I don't think I could. But something in me—some last stubborn ember I hadn't known was still lit—turned toward that voice the way a plant turns toward light it can't even see yet.

Lennon pulled me out of the ground with her own two hands. She didn't call anyone with the last name Foster. She wrapped me in her coat, and she carried me to her car, and she drove me away from that place, and she did not look back once.
