My Husband Bought His Mistress Our Downstairs Apartment Chapter 1

I turned thirty today.

I woke up to an empty bed and a cold pillow. Keaton's side was already smooth, like he'd never been there at all. No note on the nightstand. No text on my phone. Nothing.

I lay there for a minute, staring at the ceiling of our Manhattan penthouse. The morning light cut through the floor-to-ceiling windows and stretched across the hardwood in long, pale strips. Beautiful apartment. Beautiful life. That's what everyone always said.

I got up and went to the kitchen.

This was my ritual. Every year, I baked my own birthday cake. The first time, it was because Keaton forgot. The second time, I told myself he was just busy. By year four, I stopped waiting for him to remember and just bought the flour myself.

Today I made lemon chiffon. I measured everything carefully. I was halfway through the frosting when the intercom buzzed.

I almost didn't answer. But then it buzzed again, longer this time.

"Delivery for unit 15A. Ma'am, I'm going to need you to come down. It's a big one."

Big was an understatement.

The lobby was full of roses. Red roses, wrapped in black ribbon, stacked in arrangements so tall they nearly touched the ceiling. I counted the clusters and stopped trying. The delivery guy handed me a clipboard and grinned. "Nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine. Guy at the shop said it took three days to put together."

My chest cracked open.

Keaton remembered. He actually remembered.

I set down the clipboard and reached for the small white envelope tucked into the nearest arrangement. My fingers were shaking. Seven years of birthdays forgotten, seven years of eating my own cake alone at the kitchen counter, and he finally—

I pulled out the card.

*For Yareli Cruz, Apt. 14B. You are my everything. — K.*

I read it twice.

Then I stood very still and let the lobby noise wash over me. The delivery guy was saying something. I couldn't hear him.

Yareli Cruz. Apartment 14B. The unit directly below ours.

I handed back the clipboard, walked to the elevator, and went upstairs.

I sat down at the kitchen table and opened my laptop. My hands had stopped shaking. That scared me more than anything.

I pulled up the building's property records first. It took four minutes. Apartment 14B, purchased eight months ago. Owner of record: Keaton Howard.

I opened his company directory next. Yareli Cruz. Junior associate. Hired six months ago.

Then I found her Instagram.

The account was public. Of course it was.

Post after post, going back months. A man's watch on a nightstand — Keaton's watch, the one I gave him for his birthday two years ago. A La Perla box on rumpled silk sheets. A champagne glass held up to a window with a city view I recognized. Caption: *He always knows what I need.*

She wasn't hiding. She was performing. Every single post was a message, and I was the intended audience. She just needed me to figure out where to look.

I closed the laptop.

I walked to the elevator and pressed 14.

The door opened on the first knock. Yareli Cruz was wearing Keaton's white dress shirt — the one with the small ink stain on the left cuff that I never could get out. She was pretty. Younger than me. She looked at me the way you look at something you've been expecting for a long time.

Keaton was on the couch, mid-call. He looked up. I watched his face move through three expressions in under two seconds — surprise, irritation, then something smooth and practiced that I recognized immediately. That face meant I was about to be managed.

He ended the call and stood up slowly. "Cadence. Hey. This isn't what—"

"The roses went to the wrong apartment," I said.

"It was a client gift. There was a mix-up with the address."

"You bought this apartment eight months ago."

Something shifted behind his eyes. Then he pivoted so fast it almost looked natural. "You went through my records? You've been snooping through my—"

"Keaton."

"You've been suffocating me for years, Cadence. You don't work, you don't have your own life, you just—you've let yourself go and you sit around waiting to catch me in something—"

Yareli leaned against the doorframe. She was smiling. Just barely, just enough.

I looked at her. I looked at him.

I pulled off my engagement ring. Three carats. He'd proposed on a rooftop with a string quartet and two hundred Instagram witnesses.

I set it on the floor between us. I didn't throw it. I didn't say a word. I turned around and walked back to the elevator.

Upstairs, my half-frosted cake was still sitting on the counter.

I picked up my phone. I opened the family group chat — his parents, his sister, our mutual friends, the couples we'd had dinner with for years. I photographed the delivery card. The one with her name on it.

I typed one line.

*Seven years. Happy anniversary to me.*

I hit send.

Then I sat down on the kitchen floor, put my back against the cabinet, and listened to the silence of everything I had built falling apart around me.
