Chapter 3

Three days after the hospital, I was still doing wifely things.

I don't know what that says about me. Maybe nothing good. But the body keeps its routines even when the mind is somewhere else entirely, and my body had three years of muscle memory telling it to pick up Lennox's dry cleaning, restock the coffee, fold the shirts the way he liked.

So on Thursday morning I pulled his Tom Ford charcoal suit from the closet—the one he wore to pitch meetings, the one I'd had cleaned at least a dozen times—and I started checking the pockets the way you do before you hand anything over.

The breast pocket had something in it.

A Moleskine journal. Small. Black. The elastic band worn soft from use.

I stood there for a moment with it in my hand. The apartment was quiet. Lennox had left early—another meeting, he'd said, kissing my forehead on his way out, his hand warm on my shoulder for exactly two seconds.

I sat down on the edge of the bed and opened it.

His handwriting is neat. I always liked that about him. Precise, evenly spaced, the handwriting of someone who takes himself seriously.

The first entry was dated three years and four months ago. Two weeks before we met at that gallery opening.

I read slowly. Then I went back to the beginning and read it again.

It was all there. Every piece of it, written out in his own careful hand like a business plan. *Crawford family—real estate, established, one daughter, trust fund approx. $4.2M, accessible at 25. Gallery opening Thursday, confirm attendance.* Then later: *E.C.—intelligent, warm, trusting. Father protective but manageable. Timeline: 6 months to engagement, 12 to wedding. Fund startup Q3.*

Page after page. Wire transfer schedules. Notes about Rayne—*R. confirmed, Brooklyn Heights lease secured, prenatal appt. covered*—tucked between entries about our anniversary dinner and the vacation we took to Portugal, the one where I thought he seemed finally, genuinely happy.

The final entry was dated two weeks ago.

*She'll never know. She's too trusting.*

I read that line three times. Not because I didn't understand it. Because I wanted to make sure I felt it completely—the full weight of it, clean and unambiguous—before I did anything at all.

I felt it.

Then I closed the journal, slid it back into the breast pocket, and picked up my phone.

Malia answered on the second ring.

'Hey—'

'You were right about him,' I said.

A beat of silence. Not surprise. Something older than surprise.

'I'm coming over,' she said. 'Don't touch anything else.'

She was there in twenty minutes. She had two black coffees in a carrier and a camera bag over one shoulder and she came through the door with the particular quiet of someone who has been ready for a specific moment for a very long time.

She didn't hug me first. She looked at my face, and I looked at hers, and something passed between us that didn't need words.

'Where is it?' she said.

I showed her.

Malia photographed everything. The journal—every page, front to back, in natural light by the window. The bank statements I'd printed the night of the roses. The Instagram screenshot. She worked methodically and without commentary, and I sat at the island and drank my coffee and watched her.

When she was done she set the camera down and looked at me.

'Okay,' she said. 'Listen to me carefully.'

I nodded.

'This isn't just infidelity.' She said it flat and clear, no softening. 'Infidelity is messy and painful and courts treat it like weather—unfortunate, not actionable. This is different. This is documented financial fraud executed over three years with a paper trail he created himself.' She tapped the camera. 'In his own handwriting.'

'What can I pursue?'

'Full asset recovery. Every dollar transferred to Rayne's account, the Brooklyn Heights lease, the prenatal costs—all of it came from your trust fund. That's traceable and recoverable.' She pulled out her own notebook. 'Fraud damages on top of that. And the startup—Emma, you funded that company. With your money, from your trust, before you were married and after. His name is on the incorporation documents, but we can argue constructive fraud and get you full ownership.'

I opened my paper ledger. 'Say that again. Slower.'

She did. I wrote everything down. Column by column, the way I do when it matters—asset recovery, fraud damages, startup ownership, timeline. Malia talked and I wrote and the morning light came in flat and white through the penthouse windows.

At some point she stopped and looked at me. 'How are you doing?'

'I'm writing,' I said.

She almost smiled. 'Yeah.' She picked up her coffee. 'That's what I thought.'

The journal sat on the counter between us. Small. Black. Elastic worn soft from all the times he'd opened it to record exactly how little I meant to him.

I looked at it once more. Then I looked back at my ledger.

I had work to do.
