Chapter 1

The ceiling tiles at Mount Sinai are white with small gray speckles. I know this because I counted them twice while the anesthesia wore off. Forty-seven tiles. Three with water stains shaped like nothing in particular.

The procedure was done. That was what the nurse said when I came around. 'The procedure is done, Mrs. Moore. You did great.' She had kind eyes and she squeezed my hand once before she moved to the next curtain.

I did great. My baby had no heartbeat, and I did great.

My phone was on the bedside tray. I picked it up.

Lennox: *Stuck in emergency meeting. On my way as soon as I can. So sorry, Em.*

Lennox: *Meeting running long. Thinking of you. Call me when you're out.*

Lennox: *Hey, you okay? Call me.*

After that, nothing. Just silence dressed up as a screen that wouldn't light up no matter how many times I checked it.

I kept texting him anyway. I don't know why. Maybe because the alternative was lying there in the dark understanding something I wasn't ready to understand yet.

The nurse came back at eleven. Then again at two. She brought me water and crackers and didn't ask why I was alone. I was grateful for that.

She came through the door in a cream blazer and full makeup, and the first thing I noticed was that she looked rehearsed. Not worried. Rehearsed.

'Emma.' She set her bag on the chair by the window like she owned the room. 'You need to understand that Lennox had no choice.'

I hadn't said anything yet. I hadn't even asked.

'He's a decent person,' she continued, 'doing the right thing. Rayne had a medical emergency and she had no one else. No one. What was he supposed to do, just leave her?' She crossed her arms. 'You're being dramatic about this. He was going to explain everything.'

I looked at her. 'Explain what, Kennedy?'

Something flickered across her face. Too fast to name. 'The situation,' she said. 'It's complicated. You don't have the full picture.'

'Then give it to me.'

She opened her mouth. Her phone lit up on the chair where she'd set it, screen facing up, and I saw it before she did.

A push notification. Instagram. A photo of a newborn wrapped in a blue hospital blanket, one tiny fist curled against his cheek. The caption read: *Welcome to the family, little man 💙*

Kennedy grabbed the phone so fast she knocked her bag off the chair. Her thumbs moved in a blur. Delete story. Confirm.

'I have to go,' she said. She didn't look at me. 'I'll tell Lennox you're—I'll tell him.'

She was out the door in under thirty seconds.

I looked down at my own phone. The screenshot was already saved. I had taken it the moment I saw the screen—steady hands, no hesitation—the way you do something when some quiet part of you has been waiting for exactly this.

I stared at the baby in the photo for a long time. Blue blanket. Tiny fist. *Welcome to the family.*

They discharged me at four in the afternoon. I took a cab home to the Tribeca penthouse alone.

The driver didn't make conversation. The Hudson was flat and gray out the window. I sat with my hands folded in my lap and the screenshot still open on my phone and I looked at the water without really seeing it.

I folded my hands tighter in my lap.
