Chapter 3

The paper inside my coat pocket felt heavier than lead.

*Intrauterine pregnancy. Gestational age: eight weeks.*

I pushed open the door to our townhouse, intending to pack the last of my clothes and leave before noon.

Caleb sat on the living room sofa.

He didn't look like the man who had ordered me to my knees twelve hours ago. His tie was loosened, his hair disheveled, and dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes. When the lock clicked, he bolted upright.

"Wendy."

I walked past him toward the stairs. "I came for my passport and my coats. Give me ten minutes and you'll never have to look at me again."

"Wait," he said, stepping into my path.

His eyes dropped to my trembling fingers, then to the folded white paper sticking out from my trench coat pocket. Before I could pull away, he slid the document free.

"Give that back," I said.

Caleb unfolded the sheet.

I watched the color drain from his cheeks. His eyes darted across the clinical printout, locking onto the hormone values and the ultrasound summary. His hands began to shake.

"Eight weeks?" His voice cracked. "You're... you went to the clinic this morning?"

"It has nothing to do with you," I said, reaching for the paper.

He pulled it out of reach, staring at me as if seeing a ghost. The anger from last night was completely gone, replaced by a sudden, frantic desperation.

"Nothing to do with me?" Caleb stepped closer, his throat bobbing. "Wendy, it's my child. We tried for two years. Two years of negative tests, and now..."

"Now you have Aria," I said coldly. "She's twelve weeks along. Remember? The skyline proposal? The broken ribs you forgot about? Get out of my way."

"I unblocked your accounts," he blurted out.

I stopped.

"I called the bank at dawn," he said rapidly, reaching into his suit pocket to pull out a bound folder. "I lifted the freeze. I also signed the deed to this house over to your sole ownership. And fifteen percent of my voting shares in the logistics firm. It's all in your name now."

"What are you doing, Caleb?"

"A child cannot grow up without a father," he whispered, stepping closer until his shadow fell over me. His eyes turned red, rimmed with moisture. "We still have to go through with the divorce. My father won't release the board seat unless Aria’s child has legitimate status. But I'm buying Aria an estate in the north suburbs. She’ll stay there."

"And what am I supposed to be?"

"You stay here," he pleaded, reaching out to grasp my wrist. "I can provide for you. I'll provide for both of you. I'll be here four nights a week. I'll raise our child, Wendy. I swear it."

"You want to keep me in this house like a secret mistress?"

"I'm trying to protect you!" Caleb raised his voice, desperate and raw. "I can take care of you and our baby. But Aria is carrying my blood too. I can't just abandon her!"

A laugh broke from my chest. It felt brittle and sharp.

"You don't want two families, Caleb," I said, looking right through him. "You want two women waiting on you."

"Wendy, please—"

His phone blared from the coffee table. He glanced down at the screen, and his expression twisted.

"It's the private dock manager," he muttered, swiping to answer. "Hello?"

A raspy voice shouted through the speaker, so loud the words leaked into the quiet room.

"Mr. Hayes! Miss Vance came down to the marina to inspect the private yacht, and men with masks rushed the gate! They're forcing her onto the harbor transport!"

Caleb's face went white. "What?"

"They said if you want her alive, bring the master trust codes to Slip Four right now!"

The call cut off.

"Stay here," Caleb commanded, already lunging for his car keys on the console.

"I'm not staying anywhere near you," I said, walking out the front door right behind him.

"Wendy, this isn't a game!" he shouted, grabbing my arm as we hit the driveway. "Get back inside!"

Before I could tear my arm free, a black van skidded around the corner of the driveway, tires screeching against the curb. Four men in dark tactical gear poured out of the sliding doors.

"There he is!" one yelled.

Caleb shoved me behind his back, raising both hands. "Take the keys! Take whatever you want!"

A heavy blow struck the side of Caleb’s head. He crumpled to the pavement with a groan.

Cold hands seized my arms. A cloth smelling of industrial solvent clamped over my nose and mouth.

The gray street spun into black.

When my senses returned, the bitter salt spray stung my eyes.

The vibration of heavy diesel engines hummed through the steel floorboards beneath me. I was sitting on the wet outdoor deck of a commercial cargo cruiser, my wrists bound behind my back to a metal stanchion.

Ten feet away, Aria sat curled against an iron crate, sobbing uncontrollably. Her designer dress was torn at the shoulder, her mascara smeared across her pale face.

The skyline of the city was already receding into the dusk.

Footsteps pounded up the metal stairs from the lower gangway.

Caleb burst onto the deck, flanked by two armed men who pushed him forward at gunpoint. A bloody gash ran across his forehead, and his coat was gone.

"I'm here!" Caleb yelled, breathing hard as the sea wind whipped his shirt against his chest. "I have the flash drive with the offshore transfer codes. Let them go!"

A tall man in a dark slicker stepped out from the shadow of the bridge, holding a heavy pistol.

"The codes only buy one ticket back to the harbor, Mr. Hayes," the man said smoothly, resting the barrel against his thigh. "The small launch boat at the stern only holds two people. Me, and one of your ladies. The other stays on this ship until we hit international waters."

Aria let out a piercing scream. "Caleb! Save me! Please, Caleb! Think about our baby! I'm terrified!"

Caleb froze.

The color vanished from his skin. His gaze whipped toward Aria, who was weeping and trembling against the iron crate.

Then his eyes shifted across the deck, landing on me.

I sat against the steel pole. I didn't scream. I didn't beg.

My wrists ached where the coarse rope bit into my skin, but I kept my spine straight. I looked directly into the dark eyes of the man who had once taken broken ribs to save my life at an intersection. The man who had sworn under an oxygen mask that he would spend every year proving his devotion.

"Caleb," Aria shrieked, clawing at the deck floor. "He's going to throw me overboard! Save our child!"

"Shut up!" the gunman barked, thumbing back the hammer on his weapon. He turned his flat stare onto Caleb. "Ten seconds, Hayes. Who gets on the launch?"

"Wait," Caleb choked out, his hands trembling in the air. "Take me instead. Let them both go!"

"Not an option," the man replied. "Five seconds."

"Caleb!" Aria wept.

I watched Caleb's face.

For two seconds, his eyes remained locked on mine. In those dark depths, I saw fear, guilt, and panic.

And then, his gaze flickered away.

He looked toward Aria.

He didn't speak, but the hesitation stretched between us, deafening and absolute. He weighed the years we shared against the future he had built with her. And in that quiet, terrible pause, he couldn't choose me.

A laugh ripped from my throat.

It was loud, sharp, and utterly devoid of warmth. It cut straight through the roar of the ocean wind.

Caleb flinched as if I had struck him. "Wendy..."

My fingers had already worked the rough knot behind the stanchion loose minutes before he arrived. The frayed hemp slid silently from my wrists.

I pushed myself up from the cold steel deck.

"Wendy, don't move!" Caleb screamed, taking a desperate lurch forward.

I didn't glance at the gunman. I didn't look at Aria.

I stepped onto the edge of the stern railing, balancing above the churning, black foam twenty feet below. The cold wind caught my hair, whipping it across my face.

I looked at Caleb one last time.

"This time," I said, my voice steady over the thunder of the engines, "you don't have to choose."

I let my weight fall backward.

"No!" Caleb roared, throwing himself across the wet deck.

His fingertips brushed the hem of my coat, but there was nothing to hold.

The freezing black water swallowed me whole.
