Chapter 1

The restaurant table was set for two, but the chair across from me had stayed empty for three hours.

Down below, traffic crawled through the downtown grid. Then the sky flared.

Hundreds of illuminated drones surged above the city center, swarming into formation against the black backdrop. White and gold lights locked into sharp letters:

*ARIA, WILL YOU MARRY ME?*

A second later, a massive, glittering diamond ring pulsed beside the text, flashing across every glass tower in the financial district.

I held my phone to my ear as the automated voice cut in.

"The number you have dialed is currently unavailable. Please try your call again later."

I pressed redial.

Nothing. Just the flat click of an ignored line.

Five years ago tonight, Caleb defied his entire family to marry me. He stood in the rain outside his father's estate, stripped of his inheritance, swore he needed nothing in this world except my hand. Six months after that, he threw himself in front of an out-of-control driver to push me out of the intersection, spending three weeks in intensive care with crushed ribs and internal bleeding.

*I'd die for you, Wendy,* he had whispered through an oxygen mask. *I'll spend every year proving that.*

Now, the gold drones shifted into a beating heart over the river.

I looked down at the band of platinum on my left hand. I twisted it free, setting it next to the untouched steak.

"So the five-year anniversary gift," I said to the empty room, "is finding out who I actually married."

I didn't call a cab. I walked the six blocks to Caleb’s private penthouse, the spare key tucked inside my coat pocket.

The lobby concierge didn't even look up as I crossed the marble floor. The elevator ride was silent, thirty floors of quiet ascent while my pulse hammered against my ribs.

When the doors parted directly into the penthouse foyer, the front door sat slightly ajar.

Laughter drifted out from the master suite down the hall.

"Everyone saw it, Caleb," a soft, breathy voice floated out. "My sister called from the south district crying. She said the entire harbor stopped to take pictures."

"I told you I’d do it big," Caleb’s voice answered, rich and entirely at ease. "I promised you the whole city would know."

I pushed through the heavy wooden door.

The hallway was dim, but light poured from the master bedroom. I stopped just outside the threshold.

Caleb had his back to the doorway. His suit jacket lay discarded across the velvet armchair. His white dress shirt was unbuttoned halfway down his chest, his hands resting easily on the waist of a woman sitting on the edge of the unmade king bed.

Aria Vance.

She wore his oversized gray cashmere sweater, bare legs dangling off the mattress.

My fingers opened.

The platinum ring slipped from my palm, hitting the hardwood with a sharp, hollow bounce.

*Clack. Clink.*

The tiny piece of metal rolled across the floorboards, coming to rest against the leg of the vanity.

Caleb spun around.

The color drained from his face the moment his gaze locked onto mine. "Wendy?"

Aria didn't speak. Her eyes went wide, and before she even registered Caleb moving away from her, both of her hands flew down, flat and protective over the curve of her stomach.

I stared at her hands.

"What are you doing here?" Caleb stammered, taking a step toward me, then hesitating. "You were supposed to be at the restaurant."

"You booked the table," I said. My voice sounded flat, even to my own ears. "You picked the date. You sent the car."

"Wendy, listen to me—"

"Did the drones take a long time to program?" I interrupted, cutting my eyes to the window behind them. From this angle, the remnants of the glowing diamond ring were just beginning to dissolve into the clouds. "Must have taken weeks. While you were telling me about budget reviews and late board meetings."

"It's not what you think," Caleb said. The classic lie slipped out of him so fast it sounded rehearsed. "We need to talk outside. Let’s go into the study."

"No," Aria said softly from the bed. She didn't look at Caleb. She kept her chin lifted, her hands still pinned tightly over her belly. "Don't hide it anymore, Caleb. Tell her."

Caleb flinched, glancing between the two of us. "Aria, shut up. Please."

"Why should I?" Aria slid off the bed, standing on bare feet. She took a step toward me, her gaze darting to my face. "She needs to accept it. You've been lying to both of us for three months."

"Three months?" I asked, looking at Caleb.

His jaw worked, but no sound came out.

"She doesn't know, does she?" Aria asked him, a sharp edge entering her tone. "You swore to me she already agreed to the divorce. You told me the lawyers were drawing up the paperwork this week."

"Aria, stop talking!" Caleb snapped, running a hand through his hair. "Get in the bathroom. Right now."

"No!" Aria raised her voice. "I'm not hiding in a bathroom while carrying your baby!"

The air went still.

The silence pressed down so heavy it felt like water filling the room.

I looked from Aria's defiant stance down to her fingers, which remained anchored over her lower abdomen. A protective shield. A territory claimed.

"You're pregnant," I whispered.

"Twelve weeks," Aria said, meeting my gaze squarely. "He bought the ring two weeks ago. The whole board knows. His family knows. Everyone was at the rooftop lounge watching the display tonight."

A dry, bitter laugh ripped from my throat. It didn't sound like me.

"Everyone knew," I said, stepping closer to Caleb until I could smell the champagne on his breath. "Your family. Your executives. The strangers on the street corner. The only person in this city who thought Caleb Hayes was still a devoted husband was his wife."

"Wendy, you don't understand the pressure I was under," Caleb reached out, his fingers brushing my forearm. "My father was threatening to pull the trust unless there was an heir. We had been trying for two years and nothing happened. You know what the doctors said—"

I jerked my arm back so hard he stumbled forward a step.

"Don't touch me," I said.

"Wendy, be reasonable," he pleaded, his voice dropping into that familiar coaxing tone he used whenever he wanted to smooth over a mistake. "We can settle this quietly. I never wanted to humiliate you. I'll make sure the financial settlement gives you everything you need. You'll never have to work a day in your life."

"A settlement?" I looked at him, searching for any trace of the boy who had once nearly lost his life in an ICU bed for me. There was nothing left. Just a stranger in an expensive shirt offering to buy my silence. "You think I want your money?"

Aria stepped up beside him, slipping her hand possessively into his elbow. "Take the money, Wendy. It's over. Caleb made his choice tonight, and he put it across the skyline."

Caleb didn't shake her off. He just stared at me, guilt flickering in his dark eyes, but beneath it lay a cold, hard finality.

"Go home, Wendy," Caleb said, his voice dropping to a gravelly murmur. "We'll talk in the morning with the attorneys."
