Chapter 3

Magnus pinned Jonas's wrist against the shredder housing while the machine swallowed the last pages of the green notebook.

I drove my shoulder into the security guard and slipped past him. My shoes skidded on the linoleum. I reached into the feed slot before common sense could stop me.

The metal teeth scraped across my knuckles. Pain flashed up my hand, but I caught a strip of paper and pulled with both arms.

The shredder coughed. Its motor whined, jammed, and released a ribbon of gray smoke.

I stumbled backward with half a page pressed to my chest.

"Give me that," Magnus said.

He released Jonas and held out his hand as if he were asking for a misplaced key.

I backed into a workstation. Blood ran over my fingers and spotted the green grid paper. The surviving section showed three old server account numbers in my handwriting, along with Jonas's first calibration notes.

"I used this book to teach him," I said. "When Jonas was fifteen, we ran three hundred and twelve night sequences together. He learned to recognize a false baseline before most graduate students knew how to open the software."

Jonas rubbed his bruised wrist and stared at the floor.

"Mom, let it go."

"I will not let you become a criminal for him."

"He corrected a statistical error," Magnus said.

"He erased human beings." I pointed the torn page at him. "Six patients triggered red-level immune alarms across eighteen samples. You ordered our son to make them disappear."

"The patients are stable," Karin said from the doorway.

"Their liver enzymes are climbing. You saw the reports."

"I saw an unverified instrument readout."

The guards seized my elbows. One twisted my injured hand behind me, and the torn paper nearly slipped from my grip.

"Escort her out," Karin said. "Disable every credential attached to her account."

"You cannot bury this," I told her as they dragged me toward the steel doors. "The raw spectrometer logs are on the blue audit disk."

Magnus watched me without moving. "You have a disk and no institution willing to validate it."

The doors closed on his face.

Seventy-two hours later, I sat alone at the witness table in the institute's ethics chamber. A bandage covered my right hand. The torn green page lay flat beneath my left palm.

Karin stood before five committee members and aimed a laser pointer at a projection of the server log.

"The digital record is conclusive," she said. "Elin Nyberg's administrator account bypassed the firewall at 8:42 p.m. Her authorization token approved the revised data package. Minutes later, she disconnected her workstation from the network and removed proprietary material from the laboratory."

The red dot moved down the screen, landing on my name again and again.

"That log was generated by a mirror protocol," I said. "Jonas cloned my token from his terminal. Magnus authorized the upload."

The chair, Sofia Berg, looked over the rim of her glasses. Unlike Karin, she had not signed the suspension order. That made her the only person in the room who might still listen.

"Do you have evidence of the mirror protocol?" Sofia asked.

"The blue audit disk contains the original instrument logs and shadow commands."

Karin turned from the screen. "A disk Dr. Nyberg removed after destroying the network connection. Its chain of custody is already compromised."

"It is a write-once disk. It cannot be altered after burning."

"Then surrender it to the institute."

"Not to people who just shredded the physical notebook."

A murmur passed along the curved table. Sofia raised one hand.

"Was evidence destroyed?"

I slid the green fragment toward her. "This survived the shredder. The missing pages contained the sealed data dates, the immune alarms, and Jonas's handwritten calibration notes. Check the blood on the edge. I pulled it from the machine while security restrained me."

Karin did not look at the page. "A damaged scrap proves nothing."

"It contains account numbers that match the original server architecture. Run them."

One committee member reached for the paper, but Karin placed a folder over it.

"Eleven days before the upload," I said, "you met Magnus in his office. You invoked the journal's seventy-two-hour fast track and told him the investors would withdraw unless AURORA-1 appeared clean."

"I requested a progress report."

"You told him to remove the drag on the data."

Magnus sat behind the institute's legal counsel, expressionless. Jonas was absent. Karin had called him a technical witness, then kept him out of the room where I could question him.

I faced Sofia. "Preserve the central servers now. Freeze every administrator account. If you let Karin's team touch the cache, the shadow commands will vanish."

Sofia glanced at the institute's attorney. He whispered into her ear.

Karin seized the pause. "Dr. Nyberg has spent months obstructing a billion-kronor program because she resents the authorship structure. Last night she escalated from disagreement to sabotage."

"My name was on every ethical authorization until you removed it two days ago."

"Your name was removed because your judgment became unreliable."

I stood. "Six patients are showing signs of immune-mediated liver damage. This is not an authorship fight. It is an active safety emergency."

Sofia's attention sharpened. "Can you identify the patients without opening their protected medical records?"

"By coded trial numbers, yes. Six curves stop at day forty. The omitted day-forty-one results contain the spikes. Compare the submission package with the physical intake ledger."

Karin closed the folder. "The intake ledger is missing."

"Because Magnus fed it into a shredder."

"That is an allegation."

"Call Jonas. Ask why his wrist is bruised."

For the first time, Magnus shifted in his seat.

Sofia noticed. She ordered a recess and directed an independent technician to secure a mirror of the live server. Karin objected, but the chair overruled her.

It was not an acquittal. It was only a narrow door left open.

As the committee members filed out, Karin came around the witness table and placed a stapled agreement beside the green scrap.

"The institute can bury you in litigation before any outside regulator reads that disk," she said quietly. "Or you can sign, surrender it, and leave with your pension."

I looked at the first bold clause. It required me to admit that I had expanded the trial risk without authorization.

Karin tapped the signature line.

"You wanted time to prove your version," she said. "Now decide how much truth you can afford."
