My Husband and Son Gave My Bakery to His Mistress

8.9 / 10.0
When Ryan hands my beloved bakery to his mistress, even my seven-year-old joins the betrayal, ripping down my sign for a free pastry. He believes the loss of Morning Bell will crush me, but he forgets I founded it long before his company existed—and he funded her shop with my earnings. So I stop playing the convenient wife. Months later, my new bakery flourishes while hers fades into darkness, and Ryan returns, desperate for a forgiveness I've stopped serving.

My Husband and Son Gave My Bakery to His Mistress Chapter 1

Ellie's POV

I pulled up to Morning Bell at 4:15 a.m. with two flats of raspberries and forty pounds of butter from the wholesale market sweating in the back of my car.

Before I'd even rounded the corner, I smelled fresh paint.

Then I saw my son.

Benjamin stood on the second rung of a stepladder outside my bakery, holding a power drill with both hands like it was a lightsaber. Below him, Samantha held up her phone, angling for the best shot of my seven-year-old taking my store apart.

The wooden sign I'd hung eight years ago was dangling by one bracket. My mother's painted wheat stalks, gold against faded blue, tilted toward the sidewalk.

She'd painted those stalks at our kitchen table the week before she got sick. I'd hung the sign myself at three in the morning on opening day. By closing time I'd made four hundred and twelve dollars, and I'd pressed every bill into Ryan's hand because his startup had just folded and he couldn't look anyone in the eye.

He'd kissed my fingers, still dusted with flour.

"One day, you'll never have to carry us alone again."

A screw hit the concrete with a sharp ping.

"Mom!" Benjamin beamed down at me. "Daddy said the old sign's useless now. The new one's coming this afternoon. It says Samantha's Table." He wobbled, thrilled. "Daddy says Samantha's café is going to be way cooler than your bakery."

I set the butter down on the sidewalk.

Then I walked over, slid my hands under his arms, and lifted him off the ladder. I took the drill and set it on the ground, away from both of us.

"Hey," he protested.

"Ladders aren't for kids, bud." I kept my voice easy for him. Then I turned to Samantha. "Who told you that you could touch my store?"

Samantha lowered her phone. She was Ryan's college friend, the one who'd come back to town last spring with a divorce, a business plan, and a standing invitation to our Sunday dinners. Her smile didn't move.

"Ellie, I thought Ryan talked to you."

"Talked to me about what?"

"About this."

Ryan's voice came from behind me.

He was walking up from the parking lot in his gray running jacket, carrying two coffees from the chain place down the block. He handed one to Samantha. The other stayed in his hand.

I noticed there wasn't a third.

"The lease on this unit ends Friday," he said. "Mercer Properties isn't renewing it. Samantha's company signed for the space."

I actually laughed. "That's not possible."

"Ellie."

"I asked you about the renewal in March. You said legal was handling it."

"Legal did handle it."

"In April I wanted to replace the deck oven, and you told me to hold off. 'Maybe wait until summer.'" I heard my voice getting faster and couldn't slow it down. "And last month you had your property guys in my kitchen three times with tape measures. You said it was for insurance."

Ryan took a sip of his coffee.

I looked past him at the doorframe. Fresh pencil marks ran up the inside edge, neat little numbers and initials. I'd wiped flour off them yesterday without thinking.

It hadn't been three separate things. It had been one plan, and I'd been standing in the middle of it, baking.

"The building belongs to my company, Ellie," Ryan said. "I have to think about what makes financial sense."

"I'm your wife."

"And it's my company."

Samantha shifted her bag on her shoulder and started tucking a folder away. "Maybe we should do this later. Benji doesn't need to—"

The folder caught on the zipper. A stapled document slid out and landed face up on the wet sidewalk.

I picked it up before she could.

The first line was the property address. 18 Linden Street. Morning Bell's address.

Term: ten years.

I flipped to the signature page. The date wasn't yesterday, or last week.

It was six weeks ago.

Ryan Mercer's signature sat right above Samantha's, in the same blue pen he used to sign Benjamin's permission slips.

I turned back a page. Under Tenant Improvements, Mercer Properties agreed to cover up to one hundred eighty thousand dollars in renovation costs.

My oven had been too expensive. Her renovation was a line item.

"Six weeks," I said. "Six weeks ago you told me the lawyer was drafting my renewal. You sat at our kitchen table and said it."

Ryan didn't answer. He held out his hand.

"Give me the contract, Ellie."

I didn't move.

"Ryan. Did you lie to me?"

"Give it back."

Benjamin ran over and grabbed Samantha's hand. "Samantha said when the new store opens, I get ice cream every single day. Right?"

"Every day," Samantha said, ruffling his hair. "That was the deal."

She looked at me while she said it.

Something in my chest went very quiet. For eight years I'd made excuses for him. He was stressed. He was busy. He didn't mean it like that. I'd had an explanation ready for every cold thing he'd ever done.

I didn't have one for a signature.

"You had eight years, Ellie," Ryan said, and he sounded tired, like I was the one wasting his morning. "Samantha knows how to turn this place into something bigger."

I folded the contract once and handed it to him.

Then I picked up my butter and went inside.

The kitchen smelled like yesterday's sourdough starter and the vanilla I'd spilled on Tuesday. I flipped on the lights and stood in the middle of it, and for the first time in eight years, I looked at everything like a stranger taking inventory.

The walls, the floors, the sinks were the building's.

The sixty-quart Hobart mixer was mine. I'd paid it off in fourteen installments.

The espresso machine was mine. So was the POS system, registered to Morning Bell LLC, the company with only my name on it.

The copper pots hanging over the stove had been my mother's.

The recipe cabinet had my own padlock. Ryan had never asked for the combination.

I spun the dial, opened the cabinet, and took down the dented tin box at the back. Inside, on an index card soft as cloth, was my mother's first chocolate chip cookie recipe in her slanted handwriting. *Brown the butter, Ellie. Don't rush it.*

I slipped the card into my bag. Then I took out my phone and dialed.

Diane picked up on the fourth ring, groggy. "It's four-thirty."

"I know. I'm sorry." I pulled the equipment binder off the shelf. "I need you to pull my lease and confirm the end date. I need a list of every piece of equipment purchased under Morning Bell LLC, and I'm sending you invoices. And I want the process started to revoke every authorization Ryan has on the business. Bank access, vendor accounts, everything. Today."

A pause. She was awake now. "Ellie, what happened?"

"I'll explain. Just start."

When I hung up, Ryan was in the kitchen doorway.

He'd stopped at the threshold, one hand on the frame, right beside his own pencil marks. The coffee was gone. For the first time that morning, he didn't look relaxed.

"Are you seriously shutting everything down?"

I untied my apron. It was stiff with flour at the hem and still had a smear of raspberry jam on the pocket from Saturday's tarts. I folded it in half and laid it on the steel worktable.

Then I took my keys out of my pocket and set them on top. Front door, back door, walk-in. A moment later, I picked them up again. My lease still ran through Friday.

"You didn't take my bakery, Ryan." I picked up my bag with my mother's recipe inside it. "You took the room it was standing in."
