Chapter 2

"Just leave her in the kitchen," Adrian said through the oak door. "She prefers it. The language barrier makes her anxious."

Laughter erupted in the dining room.

I picked up the white linen apron from the granite island. The fabric scratched my palms. I wrapped the strings around my waist and pulled them into a hard knot.

The pumpkin pie came out of the oven in a cloud of cinnamon and steam. I set it beside the cooling rack, then opened the timer app on my phone. Forty minutes until dessert. Forty minutes to decide whether I was willing to spend another year being useful and invisible.

The pantry door swung open. Adrian stepped inside with an empty wine decanter.

"We need the reserve Pinot," he said.

"Brooke is taking credit for my project."

He stopped. "Keep your voice down."

"She told your partners she mapped the East Side. She said she conducted the bilingual interviews."

"She is presenting the Harbour Pantry Map as a firm initiative." He took a bottle from the rack. "It secures her promotion, which protects my bonus."

"I spent eighteen months verifying those routes."

"And everyone appreciates it."

"No one knows I did it."

Adrian drove the corkscrew into the bottle. "Brooke has the network and the pedigree. Her name makes the data look stronger."

"Her name makes it a lie."

"It makes it profitable." He pointed the corkscrew at me. "Do not walk out there and ruin this. I am one bad quarter away from losing my equity. Brooke is saving my career."

"By stealing mine?"

"You do not have a career, Claire. You have projects. Hobbies."

He left with the wine.

From the dining room, Brooke's voice rang out, crisp and confident.

"When I spent those two hundred hours walking the East Side, I realized language access was the real logistics problem."

"Remarkable dedication," one of the partners said.

"Adrian was a tremendous support," Brooke added.

I opened the drawer beneath the coffee station. My passport lay under a stack of recipe cards. I had kept it there for years because Adrian said the safe was crowded with documents that mattered more.

The cover was dark blue. The pages inside were almost empty.

I set it beside my phone.

The kitchen door opened again. Lucas stepped inside, adjusting the cuffs of his blazer.

"Where is the sparkling water?" he asked.

"Bottom shelf."

He crouched, grabbed two green bottles, and glanced toward the dining room. "Did you hear Brooke? She is crushing it. The partners are sold."

"She is presenting my work."

Lucas rolled his eyes. "Always so dramatic."

"I walked those routes in freezing rain. I translated interviews after midnight. I drove spoiled produce back to three suppliers because the food banks could not use it."

"Brooke got the mayor to the launch. That is what people remember."

"You were with me for six of those Saturday deliveries."

"I was volunteering."

"Under whose supervision?"

He twisted the cap off one bottle. "Brooke is the foundation director. It makes sense to list her."

"Even when she was not there?"

Lucas stared at me as if the answer should have been obvious. "This is how applications work, Mom. Names matter."

"Facts matter more."

"Facts do not get you into Stanford by themselves."

He carried the bottles out.

I stood alone beneath the bright kitchen lights. Adrian had called my career a hobby. Lucas had reduced eighteen months of labor to a name on letterhead. Neither of them had noticed the suitcase hidden in the mudroom closet, the one I had packed that afternoon after finding Brooke's place card at the head of my table.

I unlocked my phone and opened the airline app.

Vancouver to Montreal. First flight the next morning. One seat remained in economy.

My thumb hovered over Purchase.

I thought about the condo I had sold in Montreal. The team I had managed. The clients who once waited for my decisions. I thought about how quickly my own family had learned to speak about me as if I were slow, fragile, and grateful for scraps.

I pressed the button.

The confirmation appeared.

Flight 07:10. YVR to YUL. One way.

I also downloaded copies of the property title, the mortgage history, and the foundation donation receipts to an encrypted drive. Adrian controlled every shared password in the house. Once he realized I was serious, I expected those accounts to disappear. The small silver drive went into the inner pocket of my bag beside the ticket.

My pulse steadied.

I printed the itinerary on the small office printer in the pantry. The page slid out with a mechanical whisper. I folded it once and placed it inside my document bag with my passport, bank statements, property records, and the handwritten route logs Brooke was using in the next room.

The dining-room door opened. A partner called for more wine.

I carried the decanter out and stopped beside the table. Brooke sat in my place, one hand resting on the Harbour Pantry Map as though she owned it.

"Claire," she said brightly, performing kindness for the guests, "you must be exhausted. Adrian says you prefer staying behind the scenes."

"Adrian says many things."

The room went quiet for half a beat.

Adrian's smile tightened. "The pie, Claire."

I returned to the kitchen.

The white apron no longer felt like clothing. It felt like evidence.

I untied it, folded it on the island, and took a photograph of the place card lying on top. Then I put the apron back on. I still intended to finish the dinner. Not because they deserved it, but because I wanted a clean departure. No broken dishes. No screaming. No excuse for Adrian to tell people I had become unstable.

I moved my document bag closer to the pantry door. The zipper caught on the thick stack of records, so I left it partly open.

The timer sounded. I turned toward the pie.

Behind me, the door swung inward.

Brooke stepped onto the tile, but she was not looking at dessert.

Her gaze went straight to the passport resting inside my open bag.
