Chapter 2

"Pregnant."

The word hung in the sterile air, heavy and suffocating.

I stared at the doctor. My hand drifted to my flat stomach beneath the thin hospital gown.

Rhys had pushed me into the freezing Atlantic. He hadn't just tried to erase his wife. He had tried to drown his own child.

A sound clawed its way up my throat. Not a sob. A harsh, grating laugh.

The doctor took a step back, his eyes wide with alarm.

Kael didn't blink. He turned his sharp gaze from the medical file to me.

"Leave us," Kael ordered the physician.

"But sir, her vitals—"

"Get out."

The man scrambled into the hallway, the heavy steel door shutting with a solid thud.

I threw my legs over the edge of the mattress. The cold floor sent a shock up my bare feet. My knees buckled instantly. I grabbed the metal bedrail, hauling myself upright.

"Sit down," Kael instructed.

"I'm fine." I swayed, my knuckles white against the steel.

"You are in shock. And you are carrying a liability."

I snapped my head up. "It's a child. Not a liability."

"In a war, it's a vulnerability." Kael crossed his arms, the fabric of his charcoal suit pulling taut across his broad chest. "Does Rhys know?"

"No." My voice sounded like crushed glass. "I was going to tell him on the yacht. Right before he shoved me over the railing."

Kael walked to the small sink in the corner, filled a paper cup with water, and held it out.

I swatted it away. The cup hit the wall, water splashing across the white tiles.

"I don't need water," I snarled. "I need him ruined."

Kael lowered his empty hand. A ghost of a smirk touched his lips. "There is the fire. I thought the pregnancy might extinguish it. Most women would weep for the family they lost."

"I don't weep for a murderer." I paced the short length of the room, the anger burning through the remaining fog of the anesthesia. "He paraded my best friend in front of the cameras. He called me a whore. He stole my dignity to boost his stock prices."

"And it worked," Kael pointed out, his tone merciless. "His shares are up twelve percent since the press conference. The public pities the grieving widower. You are officially the villain of his tragic love story."

I stopped pacing and faced him. "Then we rewrite the story."

"Are you keeping it?" Kael asked, his eyes dropping to my stomach.

"Yes."

"It will complicate the timeline. You will show in a few months."

"Then we work faster." I closed the distance between us. "You said you have resources."

"I have everything you lack," Kael replied. "Capital. Influence. A private security detail that operates completely off the grid."

"What do you want in return? Specifically. Don't give me vague corporate jargon."

"I want the harbor development contract back. I want Thorne Industries to absorb his remaining assets once his empire collapses. And I want the satisfaction of watching a rival burn to the ground."

"You get the money and the contracts," I agreed. "I get Rhys. And Serena."

"You get to hold the match," Kael corrected. "But I provide the fuel. You will need a completely new identity. New background, new face, new name."

"Do it."

"You think you're ready for this?" Kael asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "Revenge isn't a temper tantrum, Elara. It's a full-time job. It requires discipline."

"I spent five years playing the perfect, disciplined corporate wife," I retorted. "I know how to smile at people I despise."

"Smiling isn't enough. You have to ruin him. You have to take his company, his reputation, and his freedom. Are you prepared to put him in a cage?"

"I want him in a grave."

Kael raised an eyebrow. "Ambitious. But illegal. I deal in corporate slaughter, not actual murder. If you want him dead, hire a hitman and leave me out of it."

"Death is too quick," I amended, my nails digging into my palms. "I want him to lose everything first. I want him to watch his empire crumble. I want Serena to realize she married a bankrupt fraud."

"Better." Kael nodded slowly. "But you need to understand the scale of what you're asking. Thorne Industries will front millions to establish your new cover. If you flinch when the time comes to strike, I lose my investment."

"I won't flinch."

"Words are cheap. You just found out you're carrying his child. In six months, when you feel it kicking, will you still want to destroy its father?"

The question hit me like a physical blow. I looked down at my hands. They were shaking.

I forced them to still.

"This child has no father," I said, my tone absolute. "Rhys forfeited that title the moment he pushed me into the dark."

"Convincing," Kael murmured. "Let's hope you maintain that conviction when he's staring you in the face."

"I will."

"We'll see." Kael paced around the foot of the bed. "Your transition begins immediately. The surgery will alter your bone structure just enough to throw off facial recognition software. Hair color, eye color, vocal cadence—all of it changes."

"Vocal cadence?"

"You speak like a socialite," Kael criticized. "Soft. Accommodating. Upward inflections at the end of your sentences, seeking validation."

I bristled. "I do not."

"You just did," he countered smoothly. "My team will train you. You will learn to speak from your chest. You will learn to command a room, not decorate it."

I swallowed the insult. He was right. I had spent years shrinking myself to let Rhys shine.

"Fine. Teach me."

"It will be brutal. The physical recovery alone will take weeks. The psychological training will take longer."

"I have time. I'm dead, remember?"

Kael studied my face, searching for any sign of hesitation. "We need ground rules, Elara. This partnership only works if we maintain absolute clarity."

"Rule one," I said, holding up a single finger. "Total transparency regarding the investigation. I need to know exactly who helped him coordinate the murder. Serena was involved, but they had to have paid off the yacht crew."

"Agreed. My team is already pulling the crew's financial records." Kael shifted his weight. "Rule two. No impulsive moves. You do not contact anyone from your past. No secret phone calls to old friends or family."

"I have no family left. And my only friend is currently sleeping with my murderer."

"Good. Keep that isolation. Rule three." He stepped into my space, towering over me. "This is strictly business. We are bound by mutual benefit. Do not confuse my protection for affection."

I let out a short, cynical scoff. "Don't worry, Mr. Thorne. I am entirely cured of romance. I don't want your feelings. I want your bank account."

"Perfect." Kael extended his hand again. The first handshake had been interrupted. This one felt final.

I slid my palm against his. His skin was warm, his grip unyielding.

"We have a contract," Kael stated.

"When do we start?" I dropped his hand.

"Tonight." He checked his heavy silver watch. "A plastic surgeon is flying in from Geneva. He specializes in reconstructive trauma. We are going to alter your jawline, the shape of your nose, and your cheekbones."

My stomach gave a hard jolt. "Surgery? Tonight?"

"You wanted to be someone else," Kael challenged. "Are you backing out?"

"No." I lifted my chin. "Cut me open."

"There is a risk to the fetus with general anesthesia," Kael warned smoothly. "The surgeon will explain the parameters. If you insist on keeping the child, the procedure becomes infinitely more complicated."

"I survived the ocean," I shot back. "My baby survived the ocean. We will survive a scalpel."

Kael's expression remained neutral, but a flicker of respect crossed his features. "I will send the prep team in."

He walked to the door and opened it. He paused in the frame, looking back over his shoulder.

"Get some rest, Elara. When you wake up this time, you won't exist anymore."

He shut the door, leaving me alone in the sterile silence.

I walked over to the small mirror above the sink. I stared at my reflection. Pale skin, soaked blonde hair, terrified blue eyes.

"Goodbye," I whispered to the glass.

A sharp knock startled me. The door swung open again, but it wasn't Kael or the doctor.

A tall woman with a severe platinum bob and a black leather briefcase stepped into the room. She locked the door behind her.

"Mr. Thorne sent me," she announced, her voice devoid of inflection. She set the briefcase on the metal table and clicked the latches open.

"Are you the surgeon?" I asked, eyeing the case.

"No." She pulled out a thick, glossy folder and tossed it onto the mattress. "I'm your architect. Open it."

I picked up the folder and flipped the cover back. Inside was a complete dossier. A birth certificate, Ivy League transcripts, offshore bank statements, and a passport.

The photo on the passport was a digital rendering. It looked like me, but sharper, darker, entirely lethal.

"Who is she?" I asked, tracing the unfamiliar name printed on the document.

"She's the woman who is going to destroy Rhys," the woman replied. "And she has a meeting with him in exactly three weeks."
