Chapter 3

Haley emerged from the bathroom forty minutes later wrapped in one of the suite's white robes, her hair damp at the ends, her cheeks pink from the heat. She smelled like my eucalyptus bath salts. The eighty-dollar jar sat half-empty on the counter behind her.

She sank into the dining chair like she owned it. The chef set the salmon in front of her without a word. She ate the way she'd always eaten in front of me—performing casualness, cutting each bite too small, chewing with her mouth just barely closed. I remembered the first meal I'd ever bought her, freshman year, a plate of pasta at a café near campus. She'd cried a little, quietly, and told me no one had ever done anything like that for her.

I touched the thin gold chain at my throat.

She reached for the sparkling water and her elbow caught the edge of the lacquered serving tray. It slid, tipped, and hit the hardwood with a crack that split it clean down the middle.

"Oh—" Haley didn't move to pick it up. She looked at it, then at me, and shrugged one shoulder. "It was going to happen eventually. That kind of thing is fragile."

"Sophie," I said quietly.

Sophie appeared in the doorway with the tablet already in hand. She'd been waiting.

"Would you print the running total, please?"

"Of course, Mrs. Lawson."

Haley's fork paused midair.

Sophie returned within a minute and set a single crisp sheet of paper beside Haley's plate. I watched Haley's eyes drop to it. Watched them scan. Watched the color leave her face in a slow, uneven drain.

"Forty-two hundred dollars," I said. My voice stayed exactly where it had been all morning—soft, conversational, almost warm. "The salmon and the risotto, the sparkling water, the bath salts, the robe—which is technically yours to keep now, so that's factored in—and the tray. The tray was Italian. Hand-lacquered. I'm told there are only a few in the country."

Haley's mouth opened. Nothing came out.

"One clarification," I continued, adjusting Ella against my shoulder. "Everything on this floor is billed to my personal account. Not Adrian's. Not the reservation he made. Mine." I let that sit for a beat. "So the question is really just logistical. Will you be settling this yourself? Or should we add it to whatever Adrian has arranged for you in the room downstairs?"

Her hand went to her stomach. The gesture was automatic and, I noticed, entirely for my benefit.

"You're being ridiculous," she whispered.

"Am I?"

"Wren—"

"Your card or his, Haley. That's all I asked."

She fumbled her phone out of the robe pocket. Her fingers were shaking now, and she couldn't quite hide it. She turned her back to me as if that would grant her privacy in a room this open, and I heard the tinny sound of Adrian's voicemail greeting cut off as he picked up.

"Get here," she hissed. "Now. She's—just get here."

---

Adrian arrived in fifty-two minutes. I know because I timed him.

He swept through the suite door in a navy blazer and the silver cufflinks I had bought him for our third anniversary. His hair was combed back with the wet-look product he'd started using in his mid-thirties to disguise the thinning at the crown. He stopped in the center of the room and took in the view, the bassinets, the chef, the marble, and I watched his throat work as he swallowed whatever the first honest reaction had been.

Then he smiled. The reasonable smile. The one he used for clients.

"Wren. Sweetheart. What is going on here."

"Your girlfriend is going to need help paying her bill."

"My—" He glanced at Haley, then back at me. The smile tightened. "Let me see the billing records."

"They're not yours to see."

"Wren." He stepped closer, lowering his voice, pitching it into the register he used to use when he wanted me to feel small in a way I couldn't name. "You've been spending money. My money. On—on all of this—"

"The suite is on a separate account, Adrian. Nothing here has ever touched yours."

He blinked. The smile faltered, then reformed, softer now. Paternal. He tilted his head the way a doctor might tilt his head at a difficult patient.

"Honey. Listen to me. You just had two babies. Your hormones are—look, I'm not judging. But this? This isn't you. You're overwhelmed. You're not thinking clearly." He took another step forward. "I've been patient. I've given you space. And I'm willing—I want you to hear me—I am willing to forgive all of this. Come home. Bring my kids home. That room downstairs, it's humble, sure, but it's a beginning. A humble beginning. For us."

He said humble twice. He looked, both times, like he meant it.

I didn't laugh. I didn't move. I looked at him the way I might look at a man reading a menu in a language he didn't speak, sounding out the words with confidence.

"Are you finished?" I asked.

Something shifted in his face. The reasonable mask thinned around the edges. He glanced toward the door, toward the hallway, toward Sophie standing just inside it, toward the sound of another patient wheeling past in the corridor with her nurse. An audience. He wet his lips.

"You know what," he said, louder now, projecting for the hall. "You know what, Wren, I've been trying to protect you. I've been trying to protect your reputation. But if you're going to stand here and act like the injured party—"

He stepped back into the doorway. Onto the threshold. Into the corridor itself, where the acoustics carried.

"—then people should know. People should know that during our marriage, you weren't exactly—" He raised his voice a careful notch. "—faithful. I have suspicions. Legitimate concerns. About those children. About whose they actually are."

Someone in the hallway stopped walking.

Adrian didn't notice. He was looking at me, waiting for the flinch, the tears, the collapse—the reaction that had ended every argument of our marriage.

I held Ella a little closer. I felt Enzo's daughter breathe against my collarbone.

And I smiled.
