Chapter 1

The knock came at seven-thirty on Christmas Eve.

I didn't get many visitors. Didn't want them. My apartment on the Upper West Side was small, quiet, and mine. Two rooms with tall windows that looked out over nothing important. I'd chosen it that way. After everything, I needed a place that didn't remember.

I set down the deposition transcript I'd been marking up and walked to the door. Through the peephole I saw a courier in a branded jacket, holding a slim box wrapped in cream paper.

"Delivery for Sloane Richardson," he said when I opened the door.

I signed without looking at the label. He left. I stood there in my doorway holding the box, and something cold moved through my chest before I even turned it over.

The return address was printed in small black letters. Mercer & Vane LLP. Manhattan.

I knew that firm. Everyone did. White-shoe. Expensive. The kind of place that hired people who looked good in photographs.

I carried the box inside and set it on the kitchen counter. My hands were steady. I made them steady. I pulled the ribbon loose, lifted the lid, and folded back the tissue paper.

The locket sat in the center, gold and delicate, catching the overhead light.

I stopped breathing.

It was the one my father gave me on my sixteenth birthday. The one I wore on my wedding day. The one I thought I'd lost years ago, in the chaos of packing up the apartment Raphael and I used to share, in those last horrible weeks when I was still stupid enough to cry over him.

I picked it up. The chain slipped through my fingers, cool and impossibly familiar. I opened the clasp. Inside, the tiny photograph was still there—my father and me at my law school graduation, his arm around my shoulders, both of us smiling like we'd won something.

I closed it fast.

There was a card tucked beneath the tissue paper. Small. Cream-colored. Handwritten in the slanted, confident script I used to see on birthday cards and Post-it notes stuck to the bathroom mirror.

*I never stopped.*

That was all. Three words.

I stood there in my kitchen on Christmas Eve, holding a locket my father gave me and a note from the man who let him die, and I felt something I hadn't felt in five years.

Sorry for him.

It came up through my chest like nausea. I hated it. I hated that some part of me still remembered the boy who broke his arm shielding me from a fight in the school parking lot when we were kids. The boy who used to walk me home in the rain. The boy my father loved.

I put the locket back in the box. I folded the tissue paper over it. I closed the lid, pulled the ribbon tight, and sealed the whole thing with packing tape from the drawer.

Then I set it on my doorstep and left it there.

I went back inside, locked the door, and sat in the dark until morning.

---

I got to the firm at six a.m., same as always. The building was empty except for the security guard at the front desk, who nodded when I swiped my card. I took the elevator to the fourteenth floor and walked through the silent hallway to my office.

Black coffee. No sugar. I made it in the break room and carried it back to my desk.

I pulled up the New York State Bar directory on my computer and typed in his name.

Raphael Gordon.

The page loaded. There he was. Partner. Mercer & Vane LLP. Admitted to practice in New York and the Southern District. Office address three blocks from here.

I stared at the screen for a long time.

Then I opened the locked bottom drawer of my desk and pulled out the manila folder I'd been building for five years. Courier interception records. Suppressed forensic reports. Digital timestamps. A photocopy of my father's final note, the one he wrote in his cell the night before they found him.

*I lived my life with integrity. That is all I have left to give.*

I read it again. I always did, when I needed to remember why I was doing this.

I closed the folder and locked the drawer.

Raphael Gordon was back in New York.

Good.

Let him come.

---

Dr. Morrow's office was on East 72nd, in one of those old brownstones with ivy climbing the front. I'd been coming here every Thursday at noon for three years. Nobody at the firm knew.

I sat in the chair by the window. She sat across from me, calm and still, the way she always was.

"Raphael made contact," I said.

She didn't react. She never did. "What did he send?"

"A locket. One my father gave me. I thought I'd lost it."

"And?"

I looked out the window. "I sent it back."

"How did you feel when you held it?"

I didn't answer right away. The question sat between us, heavy and patient.

"I felt sorry for him," I said finally. "And that terrified me more than anything he could have done."

Dr. Morrow nodded slowly. "Why?"

"Because feeling sorry for him means some part of me still thinks he deserves it."

She waited.

"He doesn't," I said.

My hands were steady when I left.

---

When I got back to the firm, the gift box was sitting on my desk. Still sealed. Bodhi was standing in my doorway, holding two cups of coffee.

He set one down beside my files. He looked at the box. He looked at me.

"Do you want me to make some calls?" he asked quietly.

I shook my head. "Not yet."

"Sloane—"

"Let him come to me," I said.

Bodhi studied my face for a moment. Then he nodded and left.

I sat down at my desk and opened my case files.

I had work to do.
