Chapter 1

The doctor set down his pen. He wouldn't look at me.

"Mrs. Wagner," he said. "You're not pregnant. You never were."

I heard the words. I just couldn't fit them anywhere inside me.

"The nausea. The missed cycles. That's stress. Malnutrition." He glanced at my chart. "When did you last eat a real meal?"

I opened my mouth. Closed it. I'd been giving the eggs to Devon. The milk to Whitley, because she said her bones ached. The meat to Garrett, because he worked the field.

A nurse came in later. I was still sitting there. The paper on the exam table had gone cold under my hands.

"Honey," she said. "Is there someone we can call?"

I almost laughed. There wasn't. Not here. Not for miles.

The truck bounced down the dirt road to the farmhouse. I didn't remember driving it. The sky over Crestwood was the color of old tin, and the wheat looked tired, the way everything in Montana looked tired by August.

I came in through the back. Quiet. I don't know why I was quiet.

The stairs creaked anyway.

I pushed open the bedroom door.

There are moments the brain refuses. It just hands you pieces. A tangle of blonde hair on my pillow. Garrett's bare shoulder. The sheet pulled up too fast. Whitley's mouth, half open, more amused than afraid.

"Edith." Garrett sat up. His hand went out like he was calming a horse. "Baby. It isn't—"

"It isn't what," I said.

My voice came from very far away.

Whitley laughed. Just a small sound, through her nose. She stretched, slow, letting the sheet slide off her shoulder.

"Oh, let her see," she said. "I'm tired, Garrett. I've been tired for seven years."

"Shut up," he hissed.

She didn't. She sat up and reached for her robe like it was her own house. It had been, I realized. All along.

"The certificate's a fake, sweetheart. Printed it at the Kinko's in Billings. You never signed anything that mattered." Her blue eyes were bright. "Devon's mine. Mine and his. From high school. You raised our kid for us. Thank you, by the way. He loves you more than me. Isn't that funny."

I reached for the doorframe. The wood was warm.

"Edith, listen—" Garrett was out of the bed now, hunting for his jeans. "She's lying. She's always lying—"

"The pictures in the attic," Whitley said sweetly. "Behind the Christmas boxes. Go look."

I didn't need to look. I could see it now. All of it. The way Devon ran to her only after a fall but ran to Garrett for permission. The way Garrett's hand brushed her waist in the kitchen when he thought I was outside. Seven years of small things, stacked into a mountain I'd been living under.

*

I packed in nine minutes. I know because the kitchen clock was ticking and I counted it, because counting was the only thing holding my teeth together.

Garrett was on his knees by the time I came downstairs. Actual knees. On the pine boards I'd scrubbed a thousand times.

"Edith, please. Please. I love you. I've always loved you, I just got confused, she trapped me, she had the baby and I couldn't—"

"Move."

"You can't go to New York. What are you gonna do there? Who's gonna want you now?" Whitley leaned in the doorway, arms crossed, radiant with hate. "You were a cash cow, honey. We milked you dry. Look at your hands. Look at your face. There's nothing left to sell."

I looked at my hands. She was right about the hands.

I stepped around Garrett like he was furniture.

The county seat bus station smelled like diesel and old coffee. Whitley had followed. Of course she had. She brought Devon, hitched on her hip, because a child was still a useful shield.

I was three people back from the ticket window when the man came out of the crowd.

He moved wrong. That's what I noticed first. Everybody else was drifting, and he was aimed.

He grabbed for Devon.

Whitley screamed. The child shrieked. And my body — my stupid, trained, mother-shaped body — threw itself forward before my mind caught up.

I got a hand on Devon's little coat. I got my shoulder between him and the man.

Then the arm came around my throat.

Something cold pressed under my jaw.

"Nobody move," the man said. His breath was sour. "You. Cowboy. You pick. The woman or the kid. Right now."

Garrett was ten feet away. His face did a thing I will remember until I die. A flicker. A calculation.

He lunged. Not for me.

He scooped Devon out of Whitley's arms and ran.

The knife bit. I felt the warm thread of it down my neck.

And then — I don't know how to describe it — the air moved. A shadow came past me so fast I only registered it as weight and uniform and the smell of clean soap. A wrist snapped. The knife skittered. I was falling, and then I wasn't; a hand had caught the back of my jacket and lowered me down like I was something breakable.

I looked up.

He was broad against the gray sky. Short dark hair. A jaw like a man carved for standing between other people and bad things. Fatigues. A patch on his shoulder I couldn't read.

"Ma'am," he said. Quiet. Steady. "Stay with me. Eyes on me."

His eyes were the last thing I saw. Dark. Worried. Fixed on mine like I was the only thing in the station.

Then the gray closed in.

*

I woke in the farmhouse. Not the hospital. The farmhouse.

My ribs were taped. My throat burned. Someone had changed my shirt.

Garrett stood over the bed.

"Who was he," he said.

"What?"

"The soldier. You were gone two days. Don't lie to me, Edith."

"I was in a clinic—"

His hand came across my face before I finished the word. My cheek hit the pillow. Something in my mouth tasted like metal.

From the doorway, Whitley's voice floated in, bright as a bell.

"I knew it," she said. "I'll tell the neighbors. They should know what kind of woman we've been feeding."

She was already reaching for her phone.
