Chapter 1

On the evening of our third anniversary, I set the dining table for two.

I roasted chicken with rosemary and garlic, just the way Liam liked it. I opened a bottle of vintage Barolo. I lit two white candles in silver holders.

By eight o’clock, the food was cold. By ten, the wine was breathing too long. By midnight, my phone had not chimed once. No call. No text.

I didn’t eat. I sat on the edge of the velvet chair and watched the flames flicker against the dark glass of our penthouse. Below, the lights of Manhattan looked like broken yellow glass.

Three years ago, I took a bullet graze to the shoulder for Liam in an alley behind a dockside warehouse. I didn’t even know who he was then. I just saw a man about to die and shoved him behind a dumpster. He married me six months later. He said he would spend the rest of his life keeping me safe.

At 3:14 a.m., the heavy front door clicked open.

Footsteps sounded on the polished marble. Slow. Unhurried.

Liam stepped into the foyer. His black tie was undone, draped loose around his neck. His jacket hung over one forearm.

I stayed in my chair.

He stopped by the table. He looked at the white candles, now melted down into gray puddles of wax on the linen. He looked at the cold chicken. His face didn’t change.

“You shouldn’t have waited up, Zayla,” he said. His voice was smooth and calm, like water over river stones.

He stepped closer to take off his watch. When he leaned down, the scent hit me. It wasn't gun oil or scotch. It was jasmine and sweet vanilla.

Elena’s perfume.

I didn't scream. I didn't throw my glass. I just looked into his dark eyes.

He didn't look away, but his jaw set hard. “Go to sleep,” he said quietly, and walked into his private study.

Three days later, the confirmation email popped up on my tablet.

Liam had his personal accounts routed through our home network, and an automated receipt slipped into the family inbox. A deluxe suite at the Four Seasons Downtown. Room service for two. Strawberries, champagne, and a check-in timestamp from the night of our anniversary.

The name on the guest card was Elena Silva.

I printed the page. I walked down the hall and laid the paper flat on his mahogany desk.

Liam didn’t flinch. He leaned back in his leather chair, laced his fingers together, and looked at the sheet.

“What is this, Liam?” I asked.

He didn’t apologize. He let out a small, tired sigh, as if I were a child asking about bad weather.

“Elena had a severe panic attack,” he said evenly. “The hormone treatments for the pregnancy are hitting her hard. She needed a safe place with 24-hour medical on call. I went there to calm her down.”

“On our anniversary?”

“It was an emergency, Zayla. You know how fragile this surrogacy is. We're having a child because I didn't want your body going through the trauma. I’m protecting our future.” He leaned forward, fixing me with his commanding stare. “Emotional proximity happens in these situations. It’s messy, but it’s practical. Don’t make this into something petty.”

He spoke with total authority. In his mind, he hadn't cheated. It was just something that had happened *to* him. A duty he was forced to carry.

I looked at him for five seconds. His eyes were cold and bored.

“Okay,” I said.

I didn’t argue. I turned around, walked into our bedroom, and clicked the lock shut.

I sat on the edge of the mattress with my laptop. My hands were completely steady.

He was sleeping with her. He was treating me like an inconvenient ghost in my own home. If I asked for a divorce, Liam would never let me walk away. Men like him didn’t lose things. They owned them until they discarded them.

I opened an encrypted browser. I dug through three layers of anonymous referral forums, searching for someone who specialized in permanent extractions.

That was how I found it: a ghost firm. No address, no phone number, just a secure intake form.

I used a fake name: Sarah Croft.

I kept my details brief. But when I reached the box marked *Reason for Extraction and Hostile Parties*, I typed the truth:

*Husband: Liam Mitchell. Mitchell Syndicate. I need to die and never be found.*

I pressed submit.

Two days later, an encrypted ping reached my burner phone. It gave a time and an address: a quiet café in Midtown on 44th Street.

It was raining when I arrived. The bell above the café door jingled softly.

A man sat in the far corner booth, his back flat against the brick wall. He had broad shoulders, neat dark hair, and steady slate-gray eyes. A plain navy coat, no flashy rings, no entourage.

When my eyes met his, he stood up.

He pulled out the opposite chair for me. He didn’t smile, but his posture was respectful.

“Sit down, please,” he said. His voice was low and gravelly.

I sat. “You received my form.”

“I did,” he said. He folded his hands on the laminate table. “When I opened your file and read Liam Mitchell’s name, I sat still for ten minutes. I know exactly who your husband is.”

I stared at him. He didn’t seem afraid.

“Then why are you here?” I asked.

“Because you asked for a way out,” the man replied plainly. “My name is Lucas Wheeler. Tell me what you need, Zayla.”

He didn't use my fake name. He used my real one.

I took a breath. For the first time in three years, I felt air reach the bottom of my lungs.

“I don’t want to run,” I said quietly. “I want to vanish.”

Lucas leaned in, listening without interrupting, and opened a black notebook.

“Then let’s build your exit,” he said.
