Chapter 2

I remained silent, chest tight, mind racing with betrayal and disbelief. Every heartbeat felt like a drum of accusation, echoing through the hollow chambers of my trust.

Lorenzo’s voice, usually so steady and commanding as a Don’s, trembled slightly—a rare hint of concern. “Adriana… what’s wrong? Why this hesitation? Are you upset with me?”

“I… I’m at home,” I answered softly, deliberately keeping my eyes from the gleam of our discreet family communicator. “I don’t intend to come to the courtyard today.”

There was a pause, heavy with the weight of unspoken questions, and then he spoke again, his tone gentle yet insistent, as though coaxing a wary ally from the shadows of distrust. “Very well. I will come to you immediately.”

He didn’t probe further into my refusal. It wasn’t tenderness or devotion that made him so cautious. No, it was the reality of his allegiance: his bond with Gabriella had been formally sealed in front of witnesses, under the ceremonial lights of the family hall. I was, in his eyes, little more than a contingency, a fallback if the arrangement faltered.

When he entered the room, I had just stepped out of the steaming bath. Behind him, Gabriella lingered, her presence like a dagger at my ribs, sharp and unwelcome.

“Why have you brought her here?” My voice was cold, sharp, each word edged with the authority of a woman accustomed to commanding respect.

Lorenzo hesitated, rubbing the bridge of his nose—a gesture too human, too humanly guilty to mask his discomfort. “I ran into her in the family courtyard,” he muttered. “She… she has moved into our sector recently. When she learned you were in Valdoro, she insisted on coming to reconcile.”

I fixed him with a hard stare, unimpressed by his carefully chosen words or the polished cadence he employed.

“Adriana,” Gabriella began, her voice trembling in that rehearsed, contrived way only those skilled in deceit could muster, “my mother and I acted wrongly back then. I… I am here to apologize. Can you find it within yourself to forgive us?”

I turned to Lorenzo, my tone steadier than my quaking heart allowed. “And you believe I should forgive them? Both mother and daughter?”

The past loomed like a fortress of scars and pain: the beatings that had left my body screaming, the deliberate humiliation, the destruction of the home I had cherished. I did not question why Lorenzo had ever been drawn to Gabriella; such speculation would have revealed weakness I could not afford.

I held my ground, defiant, letting the tense air between us settle. “Adriana,” Lorenzo said at last, voice patient but tinged with an edge, “Gabriella was young then. She did not know right from wrong. She has carried this guilt for years, seeking your forgiveness. Why cling to a past that cannot be changed?”

The past, I thought bitterly, was the scar tissue of my survival—the pain, the fear, the humiliation that had hollowed me. My refusal to forgive was not obstinacy; it was self-preservation. Lorenzo knew better than anyone the price of their cruelty. Yet he had chosen to bind himself to her, to place her above me, aligning his life with hers while I suffered in silence.

When he reached for my hand, attempting a gesture of reconciliation, I recoiled and struck it away. “Lorenzo! What right do you have to demand my forgiveness?” I snapped, my voice echoing the betrayal I had swallowed for so long. They had undermined me behind my father’s back, poisoned his perception of me, and after his passing, had not honored his memory.

He stared at my reddened hand, confusion and frustration etched across his face. “Adriana… I only wish to help. You are alone now, and they are all the family you have left. Why dwell on the past and prolong your suffering?”

“You wish me to move on, don’t you?” I asked, disbelief barely veiled beneath my words. The voice meant to soothe now carried impatience, a cold, measured authority I once leaned on.

In that instant, my already fractured heart shattered completely. Pain so acute it stole my breath, left my thoughts ragged and raw, nearly rendering me mute.

Gabriella’s eyes, glistening with the practiced illusion of remorse, shone with that same poisonous spark I had known for years—a spark that had haunted my youth. “Adriana,” she cooed, her words a velvet-edged trap, “it matters little if you cannot forgive me today. I shall continue to atone until you accept me as part of your extended family.”

“Leave,” I commanded, my voice carrying the authority of one who holds both power and principle. “Leave this place. Now.”
