Chapter 5

The TikTok went live at six in the morning. Me at the warehouse, boxing orders in the dark. No filter. No makeup. Just the sound of packing tape and the hum of the space heater.

The caption was three words: Building season. Day one.

I didn't mention the breakup. Didn't mention the wedding that wasn't happening. Didn't say a word about the man who'd walked out or the mother who'd demanded my venue like it was hers to claim.

I just showed the work.

Day two: product photography setup. Ring light. White backdrop. Fifty candles lined up like soldiers.

Day three: label printing. The new logo I'd designed at two in the morning, clean and sharp and nothing like the old branding.

Day four: shipping run. Two hundred boxes stacked in my trunk.

The comments started coming in fast.

*This is the energy I need right now.*

*She's not crying, she's BUILDING.*

*Whatever happened, she's winning.*

I didn't reply to any of them. Just kept posting.

The product drop was scheduled for November fifteenth. I'd been planning it for months—three new candle lines, tiered pricing, luxury packaging that cost twice as much as the old version but looked like something you'd find at a boutique in SoHo, not a side hustle.

I sent the launch email at noon.

By two o'clock, the first tier was sold out.

By six, the second tier was gone.

By midnight, I was staring at my dashboard with my hands shaking and my coffee cold.

$103,000 in revenue. One month. Seventy-two hours of sales.

I closed my laptop. Sat back in my chair. Looked out the window at the Manhattan skyline.

Then I opened a new tab and started researching fulfillment companies.

Two days later, I hired my first employee. A college student named Marissa who needed flexible hours and didn't ask questions about why I was suddenly scaling so fast. Then a second hire—Jake, who'd been doing freelance packaging design and jumped at the offer of steady work.

I rented a bigger storage unit in Industry City. Upgraded my packaging supplier. Opened a business checking account that wasn't mixed with anything personal.

Every dollar I made went back in. No vacations. No celebrations. Just reinvestment.

Camille showed up at the SoHo office on a Friday night with Thai food and a bottle of wine she'd been saving for my wedding.

"We're drinking it anyway," she said, setting the bottle on my desk. "Different occasion."

I cleared space among the product samples and invoice printouts. We ate straight from the containers.

"You're not sleeping," Camille said. It wasn't a question.

"I'm sleeping fine."

"Talia."

I looked at her. She'd been my best friend since sophomore year of college. She knew when I was lying.

"I sleep enough," I said.

She opened the wine. Poured two glasses. Slid one across the desk.

"Show me," she said.

I knew what she meant. I pulled up the spreadsheet. The one I hadn't shown anyone. Matias Castillo - Full Accounting.

I turned the laptop around.

Camille leaned forward. Started scrolling. Her face stayed neutral for the first page. Then the second. By the third page, her jaw was tight.

She scrolled all the way to the bottom. Looked at the total.

$47,340.

She didn't say anything for a long time.

"You carried that man for three years," she finally said. Her voice was flat. Controlled. "And he left you holding a twenty-five-thousand-dollar bill."

I picked up my wine glass. Took a sip.

"You don't owe him a single square foot of that venue," Camille said.

I nodded once. "I know."

"Do you?" She looked at me hard. "Because I need you to know. I need you to hear someone else say it."

"I know," I said again. Quieter this time.

She reached across the desk and squeezed my hand.

We finished the wine. Finished the food. She left a little after midnight.

I stayed at the office. Pulled up the November sales report. Started building the December strategy.

Somewhere across the city, Matias was probably still calling my phone from numbers I hadn't blocked yet. Still trying to find a way to make me give him what he wanted.

But I wasn't listening anymore.

I was building.

---

Kenna Stewart sat in her Arlington apartment with her laptop open and her second cup of coffee going cold.

Something was wrong.

Matias had been deflecting her questions about the venue for two weeks now. First he said it was almost finalized. Then he said there was a scheduling conflict. Then he said the coordinator was being difficult.

The story kept changing.

She'd asked to see the contract. He said he'd left it at his mother's place. She'd offered to call the venue directly. He said he'd handle it.

This morning, he'd stepped out of the room to take a call. She'd heard him through the door, voice low and tight: "I'm working on it. Just give me more time."

When he came back, he was smiling. Said it was nothing. Work stuff.

Kenna didn't believe him.

She opened Instagram. Typed his name into the search bar. Scrolled through his tagged photos.

Most of them were recent. Work events. Policy panels. A few shots with her at the institute holiday party.

But there was one older photo. Six months back. He was standing in front of a Brooklyn brownstone, arm around a woman Kenna didn't recognize. The woman was laughing, looking up at him like he'd just said something perfect.

The tag was still active. Kenna clicked it.

The profile loaded.

Talia Parker.

Kenna scrolled slowly. Carefully.

The feed was clean. Professional. Product shots. Behind-the-scenes content. A small business account with twenty thousand followers and steady engagement.

But the older posts told a different story.

Photos of the two of them. Matias and Talia. Dinner dates. Weekend trips. A picture from last Christmas—Matias wearing a sweater that Kenna had seen in his closet last week.

The most recent couple photo was dated March.

Kenna looked at the calendar on her phone.

March.

Matias had asked her out in April.

She went back to Talia's profile. Opened the DMs.

She stared at the blank message box for a long time.

Then she started typing.

*Hi. I know this is going to sound strange, but I think we need to talk.*
