Chapter 1

The Plaza Hotel wedding was less than twenty-four hours away, and I couldn't sleep. Not from pre-wedding jitters—I'd been with Tristan for eight years, after all—but from the sheer magnitude of what tomorrow would mean. Eight years of sacrifice, of pouring my trust fund, my connections, my very soul into building his tech empire from a garage in Brooklyn to a skyscraper in Manhattan.

I decided to surprise him with dinner at his penthouse. One last night before we became husband and wife.

"Mrs. Jacobs," I whispered to myself, testing the name. It still felt foreign on my tongue.

The Uber pulled up to Tristan's Brooklyn penthouse—the one he kept separate from our shared apartment, claiming he needed space for "late-night coding sessions." I'd never questioned it. Why would I? I trusted him completely.

I balanced the takeout bags from his favorite restaurant and pressed my keycard against the scanner. The light turned green.

"Tristan?" I called out, stepping into the dimly lit foyer. "I brought your favorite—pad thai extra spicy."

No answer.

"Tristan?" I called again, setting the bags on the counter.

That's when I noticed a small figure sitting in the living room, partially hidden by the shadows. A child. A girl.

"Who are you?" I asked, my voice catching.

She stood up, and I noticed she had Tristan's eyes. The same piercing blue that had captivated me in college.

"I'm Nellie," she said, her voice unnervingly calm for a child. "Nellie Jacobs. Tristan's daughter."

The room tilted beneath my feet. "That's... that's not possible."

"Is it?" She tilted her head, studying me with an intelligence far beyond her years. "Are you Elaina?"

"Yes," I managed, my throat suddenly dry.

"You're prettier than Mommy said you'd be." Nellie gestured to the sofa. "Sit down. You look like you might faint."

I sat, mostly because my legs wouldn't hold me anymore.

"I know you're confused," Nellie continued, reaching for an iPad on the coffee table. "But it's better you know now than tomorrow."

She tapped the screen a few times, then handed it to me. "This is Mommy's finsta. That's short for fake Instagram. Daddy doesn't know about it."

The screen showed a social media feed. Isabelle O'Brien. Hundreds of photos. Thousands.

"Scroll," Nellie instructed.

My fingers trembled as I obeyed. The first photo was from eight years ago—Tristan with his arms around a blonde woman. Isabelle. They were laughing on a beach. The caption read: "Our little secret."

I scrolled further. Birthday parties. Christmas mornings. Family vacations. Intimate dinners. All featuring Tristan and Isabelle. And Nellie.

"Where was I?" I whispered, more to myself than to Nellie.

"Daddy said you were working," Nellie replied matter-of-factly. "He always has two phones. One for you, one for us."

Eight years. Eight years of lies.

"He's going to marry you tomorrow," Nellie said, her voice suddenly small. "But in my dreams, you don't live through it."

I looked up, startled by her words.

"I have these dreams," she continued, her eyes taking on a distant quality. "In one of them, you marry Daddy anyway. You stay with him. And then..." She shivered. "It's a darker timeline. You get sadder and sadder. Mommy moves in next door. They make you feel crazy until you really are crazy."

My blood ran cold.

"They call it a suicide," Nellie whispered. "But I know better."

I stood abruptly, nearly knocking over the iPad. "I need to go."

"Are you going to the wedding?" Nellie asked.

I didn't answer. I couldn't.

Outside, the cool night air hit my face as I stumbled to my car. I locked the doors and sat in the darkness, staring at nothing.

The shock was wearing off, replaced by something else. Something cold and hard in my chest.

I caught my reflection in the rearview mirror—mascara unsmudged, lipstick perfect. The Kennedy composure my mother had drilled into me since childhood.

"No tears," I whispered to myself. "Not yet."

I reached for my phone and dialed.

"Victoria," I said when she answered, my voice steady despite everything. "Cancel tomorrow's wedding itinerary."

"What? Elaina, it's midnight—"

"I don't care what time it is. Get the tech team ready. We're making changes."

"Changes?"

"Scrap everything," I said, watching my reflection harden in the mirror. "We're not having a wedding. We're having a dissolution of partnership ceremony."

There was a pause on the other end. Then Victoria's voice came through, sharp and professional. "What do you need?"

"Everything," I replied. "Screens. Projectors. Every piece of evidence we can find. And Victoria?"

"Yes?"

"Make sure the press gets an invitation."

As I hung up, I caught a glimpse of movement in the penthouse window above. Nellie stood there, watching me, her small face illuminated by the light behind her.

In that moment, I knew with absolute certainty that there was no darker timeline waiting for me. Not anymore.
