Chapter 1

The package arrived on a Tuesday.

No return address. Just my name, Alaiya Warren, printed in a font that looked like nobody in particular had touched it. I set my keys on the counter and turned it over in my hands twice before I opened it. Seven years of long distance teaches you a lot of things. One of them is patience with envelopes.

I sat down at the kitchen table first. I don't know why. Some part of me already knew.

Inside was a thick manila folder. I slid the contents out.

The first photograph slid loose before I was ready. Demetrius. Bare shoulders. His hand on a woman's hip. Her face turned up toward the camera like she'd known it was there. Skyler Ramirez. I had met her twice on video calls — his secretary, he said. Efficient, he said. She always waved from the corner of the frame.

I set the photo face down on the table. Picked up the next. Set it down. Next. Set it down.

By the fourth, my hands were still steady. That surprised me more than anything else in the folder.

The last page wasn't a photograph. It was a hospital form. Ramirez, Skyler. Pregnancy confirmation, positive. Dated three weeks ago. The clinic letterhead was one I didn't recognize, but the seal was real.

I looked at the form for a long time.

Seven years ago, I stepped in front of a car for him. I remember the smell of the asphalt more than the impact. I remember Demetrius crying at my hospital bed after the surgery, holding the hand that still worked, saying I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'll never give you a reason to doubt me. I remember the day, months later, when he told me he'd gotten a vasectomy. So you'll never feel less, he said. So it will always be us, evenly.

I'd cried then. He hadn't.

I stared at the pregnancy report until the letters stopped meaning anything, and then I got up and made coffee. Because that was the shape of the next hour, and I needed a shape.

I did not call him.

---

By midnight I had the laptop open and every credit card statement from the last four years spread across the screen in tabs. I am good at my job for a reason. In PR, the truth is worthless if you can't prove it. So you prove it. You build the file.

Hotel Georges V, Paris, two years ago — the week Demetrius told me he was in Zurich for a client. Two adults. One room.

A jewelry receipt from Selfridges. A necklace I had never received.

Flight records I pulled from the airline reward account he'd shared with me because he'd never bothered to log out — Skyler's name flagged twice on the same itinerary as his, back in the spring.

I worked through the night. I did not cry. I made a spreadsheet.

Somewhere around four in the morning, I stood up and walked to the bathroom mirror. I looked at myself for a while. The woman looking back was twenty-nine years old and had given a man the inside of her body and seven years of her calendar, and he had spent them somewhere else.

I said, out loud, "Okay."

Just that.

---

Two weeks. That's how long I gave myself to prepare before he flew home for the company gala.

The ballroom was the kind of place they book to make people feel important — chandeliers the size of small cars, waiters gliding through with champagne on silver trays, a string quartet murdering a Coldplay song in the corner. I wore navy. Not black. Black would have told him something.

He found me by the bar. He kissed my temple like nothing had changed. "Alaiya. You look beautiful."

"Thank you."

He touched his watch. There it was.

And then Skyler walked up.

She was smaller than I remembered from the video calls, prettier in person, dressed in red because of course she was. She smiled at me like we were old friends.

"Alaiya! Finally. Demetrius talks about you constantly." A little laugh. A hand on his arm — light, proprietary. "His London schedule has been so brutal lately, I don't know how you handle the distance. I barely handle it, and I just work for him."

A colleague behind me chuckled politely. Someone else glanced over.

I looked at Demetrius. He was looking at his wine glass.

"It's demanding work," Skyler went on, warm as a knife. "He's practically been living at the office."

"I'm sure he has," I said.

My voice came out level. Almost pleasant. I felt the room tilt very slightly and then right itself.

I set my glass down on the linen tablecloth. I slid the ring off my finger — the diamond he had put there in a restaurant in SoHo when I was twenty-four and still believed in the shape of things. It came off easier than I expected. Skin remembers.

I placed it on the table between our two wine glasses. Center of the cloth.

"Demetrius." I waited until he looked up. "We're done."

He opened his mouth. Nothing came out.

"Don't call," I said. "Don't send anyone."

I turned and walked out through the crowd. My heels were quiet on the carpet, then loud on the marble of the lobby. I did not look back. I could feel him behind me anyway — the exact moment his face broke, the exact moment he decided he wasn't done. I already knew he wasn't done.

I stepped out onto the street. New York was cold and bright and full of strangers.

I took a breath that reached all the way down.

Then I started walking.
