Chapter 3

We had reached the tunnel when Adrian’s voice cracked across the pitch.

“Stop.”

He came toward us at a controlled stride, Kingsport’s head of security beside him. Lucas followed, already annoyed.

“This is a Harbor City matter,” Lucas said.

Adrian ignored him and looked at me. “The hospitality corridor has a camera above the fire door. It faces the table where her bag was sitting.”

Our sporting director frowned. “That camera hasn’t worked in months.”

“The red indicator was on forty minutes ago,” Adrian said. “I noticed it when your media officer walked us through.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

Only slightly. It was enough.

Adrian saw it too. “Check the recording.”

Ten minutes later, thirty players, six staff members, and one actress watched grainy footage of Vanessa removing her bracelet, glancing down the corridor, and sliding it into my tote.

Nobody spoke when the screen froze on her hand inside my bag.

Vanessa recovered first. “It was a joke.”

“A joke?” I asked.

Lucas rubbed the back of his neck. “She took it too far.”

“You called me jealous. You asked me to confess.”

“I was trying to contain the situation.”

“No. You were trying to contain me.”

The words steadied something inside me.

I turned to the sporting director. “I resign, effective immediately.”

His mouth opened. “Maya, let’s discuss this privately.”

“I have spent five years making this club look competent. Today your players watched me get framed and your first response was not to believe me. There is nothing left to discuss.”

I pulled my credential from my neck and set it on the table.

As I passed Adrian, our shoulders nearly touched. His hand hovered near the small of my back without landing, giving me the choice he seemed always to give.

“Thank you,” I said.

His gaze held mine. “That shouldn’t require gratitude.”

Kingsport sent an offer the next morning.

Chief executive Evelyn Shaw called personally. She wanted me as Director of Team Operations, with a larger staff, a higher salary, and authority over player logistics and commercial appearances.

Adrian had recommended me.

I refused.

Not because I did not want it. Because Harbor City’s upcoming international tour had been built from contacts I had cultivated, and moving directly to their rival with unreleased information felt wrong. My professional standards had survived even when everything else had not.

Evelyn respected my answer. “The offer remains open for thirty days.”

On the fourth night of unemployment, I drank alone at a neighborhood bar until the numbers on the bottles blurred.

I kept seeing Lucas’s face beneath hotel light. My teammates looking away. Vanessa’s hand slipping into my bag. Worst of all, I kept remembering that dark storage corridor two years earlier and wondering how the man who once protected me had become the man who humiliated me.

When I left, cold rain silvered the pavement.

A black SUV rolled slowly behind me.

I spun, heart jumping, and Adrian stepped out before I could reach for my phone.

“You’ve been following me?”

“Since you walked out of the bar and nearly introduced yourself to a bus.” He held up both hands. “I was having dinner across the street.”

“You’re everywhere.”

“Tonight, that’s lucky.”

“I can get home.”

I took one step and my heel skidded. Adrian caught me around the waist. My body struck his from chest to thigh, all hard planes and contained strength. The contact stole my breath. His forearm tightened across my back, and for one confusing second I felt safer than I had in years.

Rain clung to his lashes. His gaze dropped to my mouth, then returned to my eyes.

“You can barely stand,” he said roughly.

“I stand beautifully.”

A sound escaped him—almost a laugh. “Clearly.”

He took me to his home because I could not remember my new apartment number. He gave me water, a clean shirt, and the guest room. When nausea hit, he knelt on the bathroom tile and held my hair without complaint.

“This is humiliating,” I muttered.

“You used to hate anyone seeing you lose control.”

I froze. “Used to?”

Adrian’s hand went still against my back.

I turned, wiping my mouth. “You said I’m the same as before. How do you know what I was like before?”

He looked toward the open bathroom door as if calculating an escape. Then he sat back on his heels.

“Two years ago, after a sponsor gala, I forgot my phone in the home changing room. I heard someone behind the equipment corridor door.”

The room tilted although I was no longer moving.

“No. The man was wearing Lucas’s clothes.”

“I had borrowed Lucas’s training jacket because mine was soaked.” Adrian’s jaw tightened. “I pulled Hale off you. You were shaking too hard at the time. I stayed until security came, but I had to leave before the police statement because my father had been taken to the hospital.”

My fingers went numb.

“Lucas came to me the next morning.” My voice sounded far away. “He said I owed him nothing.”

Adrian’s expression turned lethal. “He knew I was the one who found you. I told him before I left.”

A broken laugh tore out of me. “He stole it.”

“I’m sorry.”

“He stole the reason I loved him.”

I folded in on myself. Adrian drew me against his chest. His palm covered the back of my head. I felt every steady breath beneath my cheek.

I cried until exhaustion emptied me.

For the next three days, Adrian did not leave me alone long enough to disappear into shame. He brought food. He sat on the opposite end of my sofa while I raged. When I blamed myself, he said, “Trusting someone is not consent for them to deceive you.”

On the fourth morning, he placed Kingsport’s offer on my table.

“I don’t need rescuing,” I said.

“I know.” He leaned forward, forearms braced on his knees. “That’s why this isn’t rescue. You are better at operations than anyone I’ve worked with. Come make us impossible to ignore.”

I accepted for my career.

At least, that was what I told myself.

Kingsport felt different from my first day. Players introduced themselves instead of demanding favors. Staff asked for my opinion and listened to the answer. Adrian never used his recommendation as leverage. In meetings, he challenged me hard, then supported my decisions harder.

Within four months, I redesigned sponsor access, launched player-led community content, and negotiated a streaming documentary that raised club revenue by eighteen percent. Kingsport climbed the table. Adrian scored eleven goals and credited “the people who make winning possible” in every interview.

Harbor City slid in the opposite direction.

Without me intercepting his scandals, Lucas missed appearances, fought with sponsors, and arrived late to recovery sessions. His form collapsed. Vanessa left him the week he was benched.

Our paths crossed again at a mountain hot-spring resort during the winter break.

I entered the mineral pool alone in a black swimsuit cut high at the hips and low across the chest. Months of sleeping better, eating better, and refusing to shrink had changed the way I carried myself. Conversations paused. More than one man looked too long.

I let them.

Steam drifted over the water. I had just settled against the stone edge when Harbor City’s squad filed onto the terrace.

Dean saw me first. “Unbelievable.”

Lucas stopped behind him.

His gaze moved over wet skin, bare shoulders, and the curve of my waist beneath the water. Hunger sharpened his face.

Dean laughed. “You followed Lucas again? Some habits really don’t die.”

The old me might have explained.

I only smiled. “You’re confusing me with your league position. I don’t chase things that keep falling.”
