Chapter 5

Ellis confirmed plans. He never announced them.

He'd text the day before: *Still good for Thursday?* Not *I made a reservation.* Not *I'll pick you up at seven.* Just a question, clean and open, leaving the door exactly as wide as I wanted it.

I noticed. I catalogued it the way I catalogue everything — quietly, without comment. The first time he asked instead of assumed, I thought it was a performance. The second time, I thought it was a habit. By the fourth or fifth time, I understood it was just how he operated. No drama manufactured around my silences. No pointed follow-up texts when I took three hours to respond. He said what he meant and then he waited, and the waiting never felt like pressure.

For thirty-two years I had been absorbing the consequences of men who decided things without asking. My father, who decided to disappear. Philip, who decided our savings were his to give away. They had both moved through the world with the easy confidence of people who expected the fallout to be managed by someone else.

Ellis asked if Thursday still worked.

It was a small thing. It didn't feel small.

We went to a Japanese place in the West Village where the lighting was low and the menu was short. We talked about risk modeling and then about cities and then about nothing in particular, the conversation moving the way good conversations do — without agenda, without performance. He had a habit of waiting a beat before responding, long enough that I knew he'd actually heard what I said. I found myself saying more than I'd planned to.

Not everything. Not yet. But more.

Afterward, on the sidewalk, he asked if I'd gotten home safely the last time we'd done this, and I said yes, and he said good, and that was it. No grand gesture. No manufactured moment.

I walked to the subway and thought about that the whole way home.

---

In Seattle, Philip opened his laptop at the kitchen table.

I know this because I know that table. I know the particular quality of the light in that kitchen at night — the overhead fixture that buzzed faintly when it first turned on, the way the window above the sink reflected everything back in dark glass. I had sat at that table for seven years. I had made every major financial decision of my adult life at that table.

He opened the email. He read the spreadsheet.

I had thought about what it would feel like for him to see it. Not with satisfaction — something quieter than that. More like the feeling of closing a file you've worked on for a long time. The finality of a last save.

Forty-seven rows. Seven years. Every dinner where I'd covered the difference. Every month I'd absorbed the overage without mentioning it. The surplus calculated to the dollar: $53,000. Already transferred. Already gone from my account and sitting in his.

The subject line was blank. The body had two words.

*We're even.*

I wasn't there to see his face. I didn't need to be. I had built the document precisely so I would never need to be in that room again.

---

The call came on a Tuesday.

I was at my desk, running a mortality model for a life insurance client, the kind of quiet focused work I had come to rely on — numbers that behaved, variables that declared themselves, outcomes that followed logically from inputs. Dana was across from me, headphones on, doing her own version of the same thing.

The number was a Seattle area code. I didn't recognize it, but I knew.

I got up and took the call in the hallway.

"Lila." Macie Gibson's voice was wet and thin, the voice of a woman who had been crying for a while before she dialed. "Lila, he's in the hospital. There was a fight at a bar, his jaw is — they said his ribs — and the blood alcohol, they were very concerned about the blood alcohol —"

I stood in the hallway and listened. The fluorescent light above me hummed. Someone walked past with a coffee.

"Seven years," Macie said. "You two built something. You can't just — he needs you, Lila. He's not himself without you. If you could just come back, just talk to him —"

I looked at the second hand on the clock at the end of the hall.

Twelve seconds.

"That's not my responsibility anymore," I said.

I hung up.

My hands were steady. I noticed that — not with pride, just as a fact, the way I'd note a variable holding constant under stress. My hands were steady and the hallway was quiet and somewhere in Seattle a man I had loved for seven years was in an emergency room with a broken jaw and a blood alcohol level that alarmed the staff.

I had not put him there.

I went back to my desk. I sat down. I put my headphones in and pulled up the mortality model and found my place in the data.

Dana glanced over once. I didn't look up.

The numbers were waiting. I went back to work.
