Chapter 2

The tea went cold on the desk beside me. I didn't notice until I lifted the cup and my fingers registered the temperature. That was fine. I wasn't drinking for warmth.

My floor plans glowed on the screen. I zoomed in on the office. Then in again. Then again, until I could see the pencil marks I'd made when I was drafting the original layout eighteen months ago.

The wall Nathan tore down was a partition. Two-by-fours. Drywall. Nothing structural. It carried the weight of one framed print and a coat hook. That was it.

I knew this before I opened the file. I'd designed it. But I needed to see it in ink. I needed the certainty to sit in my hands, not just my head.

Any layperson looking at that ripped-open room would see chaos. Exposed studs. Dangling wires. The kind of damage that photographs like disaster. That was the whole point.

A load-bearing wall doesn't have to be load-bearing. It only has to look like one to someone who's already scared.

I pressed my fingertips together.

By 3 a.m., I had the shape of it. The inspector. The lawyer. The paperwork. The order of the moves. Every piece knew where it belonged.

I closed the laptop.

Outside, Seattle was quiet. The rain had stopped without me hearing it start.

---

Gloria's dining room smelled like pot roast and lemon polish. She'd set the good china. That was for Capri, not for me.

Capri sat directly across from my chair. Gloria had arranged it that way. I noticed the second I walked in — the little placards Gloria used for holidays, our names in her looping script, her seating chart designed like a message.

"Delaney, sweetheart, sit. Sit." Gloria waved me down without looking at me. "Capri, tell them what you told me about the launch."

Capri lit up on cue. "Oh, it's nothing. Really."

"It's not nothing." Gloria turned to Nathan. "She's going to have fifty thousand followers by summer. Fifty thousand. Can you imagine?"

"That's ambitious," Nathan said, cutting his meat.

"It's vision," Gloria corrected. "That's what it is. Vision."

Capri lowered her lashes, the practiced dimple appearing on her left cheek. "Gloria, stop. You'll embarrass me."

"I will not. A woman with a plan deserves to hear it out loud."

I took a sip of water.

Gloria finally looked at me. Her smile was the one she used at church. "And how's your little library thing coming, dear?"

"The Ballard branch renovation," I said. "It's on schedule."

"That's nice." She waved her hand. The gesture erased the sentence. "But Capri is building something with real reach. You can appreciate that."

"I can appreciate a lot of things."

Capri's eyes flicked up. She caught the tone before Gloria did. Her smile stayed in place, but something behind it recalibrated.

Nathan didn't notice. He was on his second helping.

I ate slowly. I answered when spoken to. I asked Gloria about her arthritis, and she told me at length. I complimented the roast. I let Capri talk about her lighting setup, her content calendar, the aesthetic she was cultivating. I nodded in the right places.

Inside, I was counting. Not to steady myself. To time it.

---

Gloria caught my elbow as I carried plates to the kitchen.

"Stay a minute, honey. Nathan, come in here."

He came. He knew what this was. I could tell by the way he wouldn't look at me — his eyes on the counter, the fridge, the little magnet shaped like a peach that had been there since I first met him.

Gloria set her wine glass down with a small, deliberate click. She had a way of making a wine glass sound like a gavel.

"We need to talk about the condo."

I kept my hands on the plate I was rinsing. "Alright."

"Nathan's name should be on the deed."

The water ran. I didn't turn it off.

"It's going to be a family home," Gloria continued. Her tone was reasonable. Warm, even. She'd rehearsed this. "It should be in the family name. That's just how these things are done."

"The condo is in my name because I bought it."

"And no one's saying you didn't. But marriage changes things, dear. A home isn't a spreadsheet. It's a household."

Nathan was studying the peach magnet like it held instructions.

I turned the water off. I dried my hands slowly on the towel by the sink. I let the pause do what pauses do.

Gloria stepped closer. She lowered her voice into something that was supposed to sound like tenderness.

"You're carrying our grandchild, sweetheart. This is what family does. We protect each other. We put our names on things together."

There it was.

She said it like she was handing me a gift. Like she was welcoming me. Her hand landed light on my forearm. I could smell her perfume — the same one she'd worn to my engagement dinner.

I looked at Nathan.

He still wouldn't lift his eyes. He'd told her. Or he'd let her believe it and hadn't corrected her. Either way, he was letting his mother hold the knife so his hands stayed clean.

Something in me went very still. Not cold. Load-bearing.

I let my face soften. I let my shoulders drop the way a tired woman's shoulders drop when she finally gives in. I made my voice small around the edges.

"You're right," I said. "You're right. I've been — it's been a lot. The wedding, the — everything." I touched my stomach, just barely. Just enough. "Let me talk to my lawyer about the paperwork. To do it properly."

Gloria's face bloomed. "Oh, honey. That's my girl."

Nathan finally looked up. Relief poured off him like sweat.

"Tomorrow morning," I said. "Meet me at the condo. Ten o'clock. We'll get it started."

"Ten o'clock," Nathan repeated. He was already smiling.

I smiled back.

It was the smoothest, most unhurried smile I owned. The kind I'd learned from watching Capri all night.

They didn't know yet that a smile like that is the sound a wall makes right before it comes down.
