Chapter 5

Jonah’s parents looked at me like I was the biggest disappointment in the world. Janelle’s wails filled the room. "Evil woman! She hurt my mom! I don’t want her here! I want my mom!"

Naomi clung to Jonah’s shoulder, her voice soft, almost fragile. "I’m sorry... I only told Greta that I agreed to attend her wedding. I didn’t think she’d take it the wrong way."

Jonah sighed. "Don’t blame Greta. She didn’t mean it."

Lying on the floor, humiliated, I let out a cold laugh. "Jonah. The wedding, the car accident, the child—don’t you think I deserve an explanation?"

His expression tightened, something like panic flickering in his eyes. "What are you even talking about? Your accident has nothing to do with Naomi."

Naomi gave a small, pitying shake of her head. "I just wanted to support you on your big day and yet… you lashed out at me."

Jonah’s patience finally snapped. "Greta, when did you become like this? She was being kind to you and you attacked her? Apologize to Naomi!"

Before I could even respond, his parents jumped in.

"You’re already disabled, yet you still won’t stop making trouble," his mother said coldly.

"Do you really think you're still a Winslet?" his father added.

"Who else would want someone as useless as you besides my son?"

"Enough," his mother huffed. "This is her karma. Let’s just focus on Naomi, get her to the hospital before this gets worse."

Their words cut deep, but the real pain came from the warmth pooling between my legs. Blood.

Jonah didn’t even glance my way. With one arm around Naomi and the other holding Janelle’s hand, he walked out the door.

Five years. Gone. Just like that.

Shaking, I dragged myself into my wheelchair, booked a plane ticket for the wedding day and checked into a hotel.

That night, Jonah sent a message. [Naomi is still willing to attend the wedding for you. You hurt her and it wouldn’t look good at the ceremony. Asking you to apologize was just for show, nothing serious. My parents didn’t mean what they said, I’ll bring them to apologize after the wedding.]

[Get some rest. I have a surprise for you. When the wedding day comes, you’ll love it.]

But I knew the truth. The whole act wasn’t for Naomi, it was for me. Jonah had played the perfect husband for five years, but now the show was over.

I didn’t go home for the next two days. Jonah didn’t either, too busy handling wedding preparations, making sure everything was perfect.

The morning of the wedding, I called him. He barely noticed. "Make sure the decorations match the theme," he said to someone nearby.

His assistant hesitated. "Mr. Stafford, are you sure about transferring half the company’s shares to Ms. Jacobs? She’s not family. That’s a big risk."

"Just do it," Jonah said. "Half is what I promised her. The other half is for my child. Also, keep an eye out, if the Winslet Family show up, don’t let them cause trouble."

When the assistant left, he finally remembered I was on the phone. "Greta? Sorry, I kept you waiting. The wedding’s about to start, but I’ll be home soon. Don’t be upset, alright?"

I stared at the plane ticket in my hand, my face unreadable. "Then I won’t keep you. Jonah, happy wedding."

He paused, then laughed. "It’s our wedding. Just wait for me at home."

I hung up, turned and boarded the plane.

A message popped up, [Marriage Certificate Successfully Canceled.]

Without hesitation, I deleted his number. Meanwhile, at the wedding, Jonah felt a strange unease creeping in. Something about that phone call didn’t sit right.

His expression darkened. "Find Greta," he told his assistant. "If I were really marrying someone else, there’s no way she’d stay this quiet."

After the ceremony, Jonah held Naomi’s hand, going around to toast the guests, his face full of excitement.

Then his assistant rushed over, looking pale and shaken. "Mr. Stafford, bad news! Ms. Winslet boarded a flight this morning… and it just crashed into the sea!"
