Chapter 1

I stood in front of the mirror in the bridal suite of the Carlyle.

The custom Vera Wang gown fit me perfectly. It had layers of French silk and hand-sewn pearls along the neckline. Downstairs, two hundred people were filling the ballroom. They weren't just wedding guests. Among them were top biotech investors, board members, and liaisons from the FDA.

Six years of my research hung on today. Julian Hayes and I were supposed to announce our breakthrough cancer drug right after the ceremony. Julian was my fiancé, my partner, and the co-lead on my patent.

Today was supposed to be the start of our future.

"Five minutes, Viviana," the wedding coordinator said, poking her head in.

I smiled and took a steadying breath. "I'm ready."

I gathered my train and headed down to the limousine. My maid of honor, Chloe Bennett, hopped in right after me.

We pulled onto the street toward the ceremony venue. Three blocks away, everything stopped.

Sirens wailed. An ambulance cut across the intersection, red lights flashing wildly against the tall glass buildings. It blocked the entire street.

Right then, my phone buzzed in my lap. Then it buzzed again. And again.

Messages flooded my screen.

*Viviana, where is Julian?*

*Did you see the news about Scarlet?*

Scarlet Rivera. Julian’s childhood sweetheart. The woman he always called his "fragile little sister."

Then a text popped up from an unknown number: *Scarlet slit her wrists. Julian just rushed into Mount Sinai with her.*

Julian hadn't called me. He hadn't sent a single text.

Across from me, Chloe gasped. Her face lost all its color.

"Viviana..." Chloe’s voice shook. She turned her phone toward me. "Look at this."

It was a post on a New York gossip blog. The headline flashed in bold letters: *BIOTECH HEIR JULIAN HAYES MARRIES SECRET SWEETHEART AT CITY HALL.*

There were photos. Timestamped yesterday at 4:15 p.m.

Scarlet was smiling through tears on the steps of the municipal building. And she was wearing my dress.

It was my exact custom gown. Julian had picked it up from the boutique two days ago, claiming he wanted to keep it safe for me. Now Scarlet wore it, her arm linked with Julian's. Underneath the photo was a scan of their official marriage license.

Julian Hayes. Scarlet Rivera. Filed yesterday.

My chest went completely tight. Before I could breathe, my phone rang.

The screen read: *Julian.*

I answered and put the phone to my ear.

"Viviana," he said. His voice was smooth and practiced. "I know you've heard. Scarlet took pills and cut her wrists. She has stage four leukemia, Viv. She only has months left. She begged me for a wedding before she goes. I owed her this. You have to understand."

"You married her, Julian?" I asked. My voice sounded hollow. "In my dress?"

"Don't be selfish," he snapped, his tone turning cold. "You are strong. You have your brilliant career. Scarlet has nothing. I am at Mount Sinai saving her life. Do not make a scene today. We will talk later."

Click. He hung up.

The car went dead silent.

Chloe reached for my hand. Her eyes were wet. "Viv, let's turn the car around. Let's cancel it. Please."

I sat motionless. My knuckles turned white against the silk skirt.

I looked at the dashboard clock. Two hundred guests were waiting downstairs. Marcus Chen and the Series A lead investors were in the front row. The FDA director sat at table four.

If I canceled now, the launch would collapse. Julian’s family would pull their backing, and my drug—my life's work—would die right there.

Julian had taken my dress. He had taken my wedding.

He was not taking my drug.

"No," I said. My voice was steady. "We aren't turning around."

Ten minutes later, the double doors of the ballroom swung wide open.

There was no groom at the altar.

I held my bouquet, kept my chin up, and walked down the aisle alone.

Whispers broke out. Cameras clicked. People leaned into each other, eyes wide with shock.

I reached the stage, took the wireless microphone from the officiant, and turned to the crowd. I put on my boardroom smile. It was calm and polished.

"Good afternoon, everyone," I spoke clearly into the mic. "Julian Hayes was called away thirty minutes ago for a medical family emergency. But we are not canceling today. In fact, today is about a new beginning."

I reached into my pocket and pressed the remote.

The wedding monogram on the huge screen behind me vanished. In its place, the molecular diagram of my drug lit up the room.

"Julian and I always intended to share our proudest achievement with you today," I said, looking straight at Marcus Chen. "Welcome to the official launch presentation of Marshall Compound 7."

For the next forty minutes, I didn't stumble once.

I broke down the Phase II trial data. I answered tough questions from investors. I worked the room, shook hands, and secured three funding commitments before dessert was served.

I didn't shed a single tear.

Night fell, and the ballroom emptied.

I took the private elevator up to the honeymoon suite alone. The room was decorated with white roses and an unopened bottle of champagne on ice.

I sat on the edge of the mattress. My phone screen lit up in the dark.

I pulled up the blog photo one last time. Scarlet, glowing in my gown. Julian, looking down at her with tender care.

I felt a sharp ache in my throat, but my eyes stayed dry.

I stood up, took off the dress, and hung it in the closet. I didn't sleep.

At 5:00 a.m., the city was still dark and gray. I laced up my running shoes, pulled on a black hoodie, and left the hotel through the service exit.

The morning air bit into my face like ice.

I ran.

I ran past Central Park, past the dark storefronts, pushing my legs harder and harder until my lungs burned.

On an empty corner of 72nd Street, where there were no lights and no audience, my chest finally broke open.

The tears came hard and fast, hot against the freezing wind. I let them fall, and I didn't stop running.
