Chapter 2

The compliance file landed on my desk at 2:17 p.m. on a Tuesday.

I was reviewing third-quarter projections when my computer chimed. Internal routing. High priority. I opened the attachment.

Audio file. Financial records. A memo from the board's compliance committee requesting immediate investigation into alleged data breach.

My name was at the top of the document.

I played the audio file. My voice came through the speakers. Flat. Professional. Discussing proprietary biotech data with someone I didn't recognize. Mentioning transfer protocols. Discussing compensation.

I stopped the playback.

I'd never made that call.

I played it again. Listened closer. The cadence was wrong. The words were mine — I recognized fragments from routine status updates, vendor calls, internal briefings — but the sequence was wrong. The pauses didn't match the way I spoke.

Someone had cut my voice into pieces and put it back together.

I opened the financial records. Transfer logs bearing my credentials. Account numbers I'd never seen. Dates and timestamps that meant nothing to me.

My hands were steady on the keyboard. I pulled up my access logs for the dates in question. Cross-referenced them against the transfer timestamps. The timing didn't align. I'd been in board meetings during two of the alleged transfers. The third had occurred while I was on a flight to San Francisco for a vendor negotiation.

I documented every discrepancy. Built a timeline. Pulled supporting evidence from three separate databases.

Then I walked to Colton's office.

His door was closed. I knocked twice.

"Come in."

He was at his desk, reading something on his laptop. He didn't look up.

"I need to talk to you," I said.

He glanced at me. Brief. Assessing. Then back to the screen. "Make it quick."

I set my tablet on his desk. "Compliance sent me a file. Someone fabricated evidence to make it look like I sold proprietary data."

He picked up the tablet. Scrolled through my documentation. His expression didn't change.

"The audio is spliced," I said. "The timestamps don't match my access logs. I can prove I was in board meetings or off-site during every alleged transfer."

He kept scrolling.

"Colton."

He looked up.

"I didn't do this," I said.

He set the tablet down. Leaned back in his chair. Studied me for a long moment.

"The board is calling for an investigation," he said. "This is serious."

"I know it's serious. That's why I'm showing you the evidence that proves it's fake."

"Evidence can be interpreted multiple ways."

I stared at him. "What?"

"You have motive," he said. His voice was calm. Clinical. "Access. Opportunity. The financial records bear your credentials."

"Because someone used my credentials. Look at the timeline. Look at the access logs."

"I am looking."

Something cold settled in my chest.

"You don't believe me," I said.

He didn't answer immediately. He picked up the tablet again. Scrolled through the documentation one more time. Then he set it down and met my eyes.

"I believe the board needs to see a thorough investigation," he said. "I can't show favoritism."

"This isn't favoritism. This is the truth."

"The truth is what the evidence shows."

I felt something crack. Small. Hairline. Deep inside where I kept the things I didn't let myself look at.

"You know me," I said. My voice was quiet. "Ten years. You know I wouldn't do this."

He looked at me. His face was unreadable.

"I know the board is watching," he said. "I know Oakley flagged concerns about data security weeks ago. I know we can't afford the optics of covering for an executive assistant with access to sensitive files."

Oakley.

The name landed like a stone in still water.

"This was Oakley," I said.

His expression hardened. "Don't."

"She fabricated this. She has the connections. She has the motive."

"Enough."

His voice cut through the air. Sharp. Final.

"I won't have you making accusations without evidence," he said. "The investigation will proceed. If you're innocent, it will clear you."

I stood there. The tablet was still on his desk. My documentation. My timeline. My proof.

He wasn't going to use it.

"Colton," I said.

He looked down at his laptop. Dismissal.

I picked up the tablet and walked out.

I sat at my desk for twenty minutes. Then I opened my personal files and started copying them to an external drive. I didn't know why. Instinct. The same instinct that told me to document everything. To keep records.

The instinct that knew, before I did, that I was going to need them.

Two days later, I was arrested.

Two officers came to the building at 4:00 p.m. They were polite. Professional. They asked me to come with them. I looked at Colton's closed door. I thought about knocking. About asking him to do something.

I didn't.

I walked out between the officers. The lobby was full of people. Colleagues. Subordinates. People I'd worked with for ten years.

They watched me leave.

No one said anything.
